Introducing oneMAR
oneMAR is an internet-based system that seamlessly
integrates the information and care needs of pharma-
cies, HCFs and physicians. oneMAR links in-house
pharmacy systems with automated dose packagers,
allowing your pharmacy provider to offer numerous
features such as medication safety via point of care
scanning, inventory management and
improved communication.
By introducing oneMAR, you will implement a safer,
more effective and streamlined method of medication
administration:
Scanning a barcode identifies and opens the corresponding •
resident’s chart and highlights medications to administer
“7 Rights” bar coding: right resident / drug / dose / time / •
route / reason / documentation
Access to digital photos of residents and medications•
Real-time information accessible through resident charts•
Warning message(s) preventing missed medications or •
administration to the wrong resident, and verification that a
medication pass is complete
Clear indication when a medication has been discontinued•
Reminders to ensure completion of required documentation, •
and to receive, scan and administer new prescriptions
Images of original prescription to support new •
prescription verification
Extensive reporting capabilities•
5
Each item is checked and scanned out of inventory when leaving the pharmacy
Bar code scanning at point of care verifies “7 Rights”
Medication is delivered to the HCF
All items arriving from the pharmacy are scanned into inventory at the HCF
Non-packaged items i.e. inhalers, creams, and liquids are also bar coded
Medication is placed into resident specific containers
Each multi-dose package has a unique bar code

Time savingsA single scan opens a resident’s
daily MAR and displays all infor-
mation necessary to safely admin-
ister medication, a process found
to be 2.6 times more efficient than
manual MAR processes. Further-
more, there is no need to review
printed copies of monthly MARs
as oneMAR is always in real-time.
“On top of increased safety and
consistent documentation, less
nursing time is spent on the labour
side of medication administration,”
- Rita Steeple RN, DOC
Medication safetyBarcode scanning at the point of
care ensures the “7 Rights” bar
coding: right resident / drug / dose
/ time / route / reason / documen-
tation. Digital resident images help
with resident identification which
is especially important for casual
RNs, staff working at a number
of facilities, and HCFs with high
turnover. Digital images of medi-
cations assist with medication
identification and decrease the
mental workload for users. Warn-
ing message(s) prevent missed
medications or administration
to the wrong resident and clear
indication when a medication has
been discontinued prevents ac-
cidental administration. Physician
orders can be captured as a digital
image. If entered by the HCF, the
pharmacy is notified, then associ-
ates the image to a new prescrip-
tion, making it accessible in the
resident profile. For all new orders,
HCF users are prompted to
review the image of the
original prescription.

Clinical support Access to real-time drug informa-
tion, resident medication review
tools, and pull-down diagnostic
tools such as vitals support best
practice at HCFs and organiza-
tion-wide. oneMAR is part of the
Catalyst Resident Management
Solutions product line, which in-
cludes RAI MDS 2.0 and Dynamic
Charting, providing HCFs with
user-friendly clinical tools required
to support the highest
quality of care.
Electronic orderingPrescriptions and supplies are
sent electronically from the point
of care and received electroni-
cally by pharmacy. Notes can
be sent to pharmacy, i.e. regard-
ing urgency, and pharmacy can
send comments in return. Two-
way communication allows both
pharmacy and HCF to know the
status of each request, i.e. filled
by pharmacy or still pending.
FlexibilityoneMAR creates a standardized
process for safe medication ad-
ministration while supporting clini-
cal decision-making, i.e. HCF can
modify a single medication admin-
istration time, request a permanent
change from pharmacy or handle
a discontinue order called in by a
physician. Care givers administer
medications with precise elec-
tronic sign-off and indicate when
medication is taken off site for
leave of absence or not given at
all due to hospitalization. oneMAR
supports clinical practice and en-
sures complete documentation.

Inventory trackingTracking from the initial order, fill-
ing by the pharmacy, and receipt
at the HCF is accomplished with
scanning. Inventory is tracked at
the dose level, i.e. an inhaler may
have 200 doses, ensuring that
care givers always know what is
available and on-hand for each
resident. Electronic ordering at the
point of care makes requesting
additional medications or supplies
fast and simple.
Physician requestsA consult request can be prepared
at the point of care; each consult
is automatically populated with
resident information including
diagnosis, allergies and a com-
plete list of current medications.
Go beyond the SBAR (Situation,
Background, Assessment, Rec-
ommendation) model by attach-
ing important clinical information
such as a complete monthly MAR,
progress notes and vitals. The
physician has access to all clini-
cally relevant information, increas-
ing the ability to respond quickly
and accurately.
Vitals and measuresPrint, display or graph values from
vital signs and measures for trend-
ing and analysis. Attach to physi-
cian requests to ensure access to
all clinically relevant information.
Automated notificationsMinimize the need to fax or phone
the pharmacy, and save time due
to automated notification of
transfers, allergies added, hospi-
talization, and more!
9
Schedule and remindersSchedule and track events, i.e.
outpatient visits, physiotherapy
appointments, recreation activities.
Print or view the events calendar
sorted by resident, unit, date or
designation, i.e. RN, physiothera-
pist, physician. Select scheduled
items for display on resident
MARs.
24/7 data accessHealth care staff as well as phar-
macists and physicians can be
granted access to oneMAR,
ensuring the continuity of care by
reviewing consistent, up-to-date
information thereby improving
decision-making for resident care.
Extensive reportingReports extract information used
to ensure improved resident care
and outcomes, i.e. a PRN usage
report allows nurses and phar-
macists to identify the need for
conversion to a routine medica-
tion and the Section U report
automates access to RAI MDS
medication-related data.
Fully integrated solutiononeMAR is part of the Catalyst
Resident Management Solutions
product line, which includes RAI
MDS 2.0 and Dynamic Charting,
providing HCFs with user-friendly
clinical tools required to support
the highest quality of care.

Preparing for oneMAR
If your pharmacy service provider doesn’t already
support oneMAR, they should contact Catalyst to
discuss how to get started. Alternatively, Catalyst
can recommend a network of pharmacies
offering oneMAR.
Once your Catalyst contract is signed, the implemen-
tation team will guide you through all required prepa-
rations. Hardware can be sourced independently, or
purchased on your behalf, terms of which are detailed
in your contract.
Hardware decisionsTypical set-up is a laptop and a barcode scanner
mounted to each medication cart; a wireless network
is highly recommended, however, many different set-
ups can be supported. For example, facilities with
‘pods’ often use existing desktop computers with
hard-wired internet access; all HCFs require
barcode scanners.

installed at HCF
A minimum of two free USB ports for the scanner •
and a mouse
Support for 1024 x 768 resolution•
Support for Mozilla Firefox version 3.0 or greater•
Cellular card highly recommended•
Each laptop accessing oneMAR must have the latest
versions of Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader, Mozilla Fire-
fox version 3.0 or greater and Microsoft .NET Frame-
work version 3.5 SP1. These programs are require-
ments for oneMAR and can be downloaded for free
from www.adobe.com, www.mozilla.com/firefox/ and
www.microsoft.com.
Scanner specificationsHand Held Products (HHP), Model 4600r.
Network decisionsHaving a dedicated IT resource is a key success fac-
tor when implementing an electronic system. This
resource can help with decisions regarding cost vs
features/functionality, and provide ongoing network
and IT support.
An external storage device (USB key) that
automatically downloads MARs as PDFs is available
ensuring up-to-date MARs can always be printed
either on-site or remotely. Alternatively, the HCF can
call the pharmacy to request MARs via fax or delivery.
For facilities using laptops, an electrical outlet needs
to be accessible for re-charging during storage. In
addition, a back-up to the wireless network is recom-
mended. Cellular networking solutions can provide
backup internet access during outages. Depend-
ing on the provider, these are typically pay-per-use
services.
TimelinesTimelines are dependant on your pharmacy service
provider, as well as timely hardware purchases, con-
figuration decisions, and establishing reliable internet
connectivity.
