Long acknowledged as Dublin’s number one meeting place, The Horseshoe Bar has seen it all down through the years. The bar’s name derives from the shape of its counter – that of a horseshoe – although some think it is through a long association with the racing and hunting set who often sat around the bar counter discussing the form and guessing the odds. Atmospheric and wholly distinctive, the Horseshoe Bar has always been a meeting point for politicians and journalists, sportsmen and movie stars, visiting dignitaries and local personalities. It opened in 1957 and was designed by Sam Stephenson. It is handsome and evocative, with Hogarth prints, a white counter top and shining brass, and if its rich red walls could talk they would have some fascinating stories to tell. An Irish institution with class, character and distinction, to experience the unique ‘craic’ in The Horseshoe Bar is to get a true flavour of Irish life. A distinctive feature are the Hogarth(1697-1764) Prints above the bar - Hogarth, famous for his satirical prints condemning social ills of the era (1700’s) like the cheap gin that drove the poor to unemployment, dissolution, suicide, and the dangers of moral laxity among the moneyed classes.

An Exclusive Scotch Flight Celebrating Robert Burns Night

Only available on Saturday 25th of January. The annual celebration of the life and works of Robert

Burns, regarded as the national poet of Scotland.

The Horseshoe Bar team has created a bespoke Scotch Flight, to entice our regular Irish Whiskey drinkers, and to sate the tastes of proud Scotch drinkers.

Johnnie Walker Blue The crown jewel in the walker series, harking back to 1867, when Alex Walker was looking to

create a blend indicative of the flavours of the "four corners of Scotland"

Sweet, subtle, and appropriately luxurious. Wisps of peat smoke, hints of charred oak, rich vanilla cream, sweet chili pepper flake and bittersweet chocolate

Macallan AmberPart of the 1824 Series, created to reflect the founding of the distillery, which also happens

to coincide with our own founding here at the Shelbourne, a happy coincidence?

Cinnamon and boozy raisins. Rich texture, mouthfilling, but still precise and clean. Easy to drink.

Glenmorangie 18A rare and exciting Whiskey. The distillers set aside their signature dram for 15 years in American white oak casks. 30% in Spanish Oloroso casks, while the remainder stays in

the American white oak to be married later.

The palate is tropical and creamy with nectarines in yoghurt, acacia honey, peaches in cream and butterscotch.

Laphraoig 10A real peat lovers go to, rich smoke and salinity matches well with the iodine touch of seaweed.

Seaweed, vanilla, spices, cardamom, black pepper, lemon, pear.

A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF 'UISCE BEATHA'

IRISH WHISKEYIrish Whiskey is generally distilled three times, making it a sweeter and smoother styled Whiskey. By Law, it must be aged in wooden barrels for a minimum of three years here in Ireland before it can be labelled 'Irish Whiskey.' Irish Whiskey comes in Four different styles.

Blended - The most common and mass produced. It is usually a sweeter tasting whiskey. Very appealing to a wider audience.

Pot Still - A Whiskey with much more spice and depth of flavour. Can tend to be a little harsher to an inexperienced Whiskey drinker.

Single Malt - A smoother, creamier mouthfeel and taste is produced from these Whiskeys due to only malted barley being used.

Single Grain - Typically a lighter style of Whiskey. The maturation in various types of casks adds the layers of flavour in this relatively newer style of Irish Whiskey.

SCOTCH WHISKYHailing from the proud country of Scotland, this fantastic and ranging spirit not only drops the 'E' in Whiskey, it comes in Five unique styles which can be broken down based on the Five regions of Scotland.

Speyside - Lies in the North Eastern part of Scotland and produces Whiskys known for being less heavily peated and more fruit forward.

Lowland - South of Scotland bordering England, this region produces softer and smoother Whiskies. Overall a lighter Whisky of the Scotch choices.

Highland - The North of Scotland. The largest of the regions, it takes on many characteristics and can vary greatly. It includes some coastal regions and Island, leading to some heavily peated and sea saltiness styles Whisky.

Campbelltown - A peninsula to the West of the Main Land. This location produces Whisky with hints of salt with some vibrant fruit and vanilla notes.

Islay - An Island West of Scotland and slightly North of Campbelltown. Produces whisky that is heavily peated, full of flavour and earth tones with a backbone of salinity.

AMERICAN WHISKEYAmerican Whiskey is split between two very different styles, Bourbon and Rye. Unique to American Whiskey, the spirit by Law must be aged in New American Oak barrels, this is what leads to a lot Bourbon barrell usage in other Whiskey producing countries.

Bourbon - Must be made from a mimimum 51% corn and generally distilled in column Stills. This Whiskey tends to be on the sweeter side and full bodied.

Rye - Has to be made from at least 51% rye grain by Law. This produces a spirit with much more spice characteristics and subtle fruit tones.
