July 26, 2005 -- A treatment made famous for fighting wrinkles mayalso provide lasting relief from another embarrassing condition:excessive underarm sweat. The first long-term study of Botox injections in the treatment of thecommon sweating disorder shows the injections can safely reduce
underarm sweat for up to two years. Known in medical terms asaxillary hyperhidrosis, the condition affects more than a millionpeople in the U.S. People with this condition sweat up to four timesmore than normal in order to maintain a normal body temperature.People with the disorder often suffer from difficulty in socialsituations and say it significantly interferes with their dailyactivities."These long-term data demonstrate that Botox for severe primaryaxillary hyperhidrosis over a two-year period is a safe and effectivetherapeutic option for patients who otherwise struggle withsubstantial impairment," says researcher Dee Anna Glaser, MD,professor of dermatology and vice chairman of dermatology at SaintLouis University School of Medicine, in a news release. The FDA approved Botox (botulinum toxin type A) for treatment ofaxillary hyperhidrosis that can't be resolved with prescriptioncreams or antiperspirants in July 2004.Botox Offers Lasting ReliefIn this three-year study, researchers examined the safety, effectiveness, and cost of repeated treatment with Botox injectionson people with axillary hyperhidrosis and the impact of the
treatment on their quality of life. The study involved 193 people whohad participated in an earlier one-year clinical trial of Botox forhyperhidrosis. They were given the option to continue treatment
every eight weeks if symptoms persisted under this follow-up study. In the follow-up study, researchers found Botox continued to beeffective with repeated treatment. After the first treatment, 82% hadup to a 75% reduction in sweat production in four weeks after theinjection.Four weeks after treatments two and three, 79% experienced thesame degree of relief.Overall, 94% of patients required four or fewer Botox injections tocontrol their symptoms during the two-year study.

Plan Ahead to Fit in Fitness: Vacations should be an opportunity to re-
energize, refresh, and relax -- not an excuse to take a break from health.
When planning your vacation, opt for locations that will allow you to engage
in physical activities you enjoy. Keep in mind that physical activity is the
ticket to enjoying extra calories without weight gain.
Be Prepared: When you travel, whether by plane, train, or automobile, be
prepared with healthy food so you wont have to eat whatever is available.
Start the day with a nutritious breakfast, then pack easy and satisfying snacks
a small meal, such as a turkey sandwich with lettuce and tomato on
whole-grain bread, a piece of fruit, and some cut-up veggies with hummus.
Avoid Dining-Out Disasters: Eating out may pose the biggest challenge
for avoiding vacation weight gain. "It is easy to control calories if you stay
away from fried, crispy, or creamy foods; hold extras such as cheese and
mayo; top salads with low-fat dressings; drink water instead of
sodas -- simple things that can shave calories and make room for the special
treats," says Blatner.
Indulge in Moderation: Deprivation is no fun when you're on vacation.
Instead, "the name of the game is moderation when it comes to controlling
calories from treats and alcohol," says Blatner. So have one scoop of ice
cream instead of the sundae, or split that decadent dessert with a dining
companion.
Pare Down Portions: Even when you're on vacation, portions count
if you want to avoid weight gain.
Facts About SunExposure
UVArays cause skin aging andwrinkling and contribute toskin cancer, such as melanoma.Because UVA rays passeffortlessly through the ozonelayer (the protectivelayer ofatmosphere, or shield, surrounding the earth), theymake up the majority of oursun exposure. Beware oftanning bedsbecause they useUVA rays as well as UVB rays.
UVB rays are also dangerous, causing sunburns, cataracts
(clouding of the eye lens),andeffects on the immune system. They also contribute to skincancer.
UVC rays are the mostdangerous, but fortunately, these rays are blocked by theozone layer and don't reach theearth.
