Introduction This document provides guidelines and worked examples for an ALCS to Access Copyright ONIX-DS use case that has been analysed during Pilot Project 1.

The guidelines take the form of a table whose first three columns are a compressed version of the ONIX-DS Overview. The fourth column shows typical content for each individual element, colour-coded to indicate dictionary terms, labels and other data strings in the same way as in other ONIX documentation. (For composite elements, the column carries the word “Composite”, since in this case the content comprises the included elements.) The fifth column carries application notes and business rules.

Elements in the format that are not used are shaded out in grey.

Following the guidelines, an XML example is given.

Notes These notes apply specifically to the ALCS-to-AccessCopyright implementation. They may not necessarily apply to other ONIX-DS implementations.

Distributions from ALCS to Access Copyright comprise monies received by ALCS, and payable to authors resident in Canada or who for any other reason receive payment through Access Copyright.

The monies received and redistributed by ALCS are themselves derived from distributions from different collecting agencies, covering different types of material and based on different methods of allocation. These “source distributions” may cover different periods of time, so that there is no single time period associated with the ALCS distribution.

ALCS maintains an account for each author. The amounts received are allocated to individual authors, and a listing is created for each author account. If the source distribution was title-specific, the allocation is on the basis of individual titles by the author concerned. If the source distribution was non-title specific, the allocation is based on criteria that depend on the type of distribution. These criteria are not shown explicitly in the author account listing.

The initial business requirement for the ONIX-DS format was for “title-specific” and “non-title-specific” distributions. The ALCS distribution has elements of both at a detailed level, but its overall organisation is by author account. This has made it necessary to define a “Distribution By Account” option in ONIX-DS, within which detail can be carried “by resource title” or “by resource class” or simply “by source distribution”, when the source distribution is a lump sum that has no specified breakdown.

Each source distribution that has contributed to the ALCS distribution is described in a “Source Distribution Definition”, where it is assigned a label by which it is referenced wherever it occurs in individual author account listings.

At the detail level, ie for each title in the case of title-specific sources, or otherwise simply for each source, ALCS lists a single monetary amount, the gross amount due to the author before any deductions by ALCS.

At the author account level, these amounts are totalled to show a gross amount for the account; ALCS deducts its commission, at member or non-member rate, and the net amount for the account may then be subject to UK tax. The amount actually payable to the holder of the account is the net amount after tax.

At the distribution level, the amounts for all listed accounts are totalled, to give a gross amount for the whole distribution, total commission deducted by ALCS, total UK tax deducted, and the total net amount payable to Access Canada.

In this use case, each ONIX-DS message carries only one distribution element, listing an indefinite number of author accounts; and a single associated distribution payment element.

Distribution Example For purposes of illustration only, this example shows a distribution that lists only a single recipient (ie a single author account). In practice, the <DistributionByAccount> composite would be repeated for each author account. A single source distribution – a CLA title-specific distribution – is shown, and a single <DetailByResource> composite is listed. Again, in practice, these elements would be repeated, and there would be a mix of source distribution types.
