Field Trip Funds

The fourth grade students at Folsom Elementary are going on a field trip to St. Augustine and Mrs. Wimberly needs to know how much it is going to cost. If the cost of the field trip is $105 per student and 63 students are attending, what is the total cost? Prove your solution using the standard algorithm and another strategy.

Explain how your two strategies are related.

Then, choose which strategy is the most efficient to solve this problem and explain why.

Cupcake ConflictMarcus and his sister Diamond are arguing over

the cupcakes for his birthday party. They know some are chocolate and some are vanilla. He says 12/36 are chocolate, but she says 5/9 are vanilla. Who is correct? Use a model and another strategy to prove your thinking.

Then, pretend you are the sibling who is correct and write to explain to your brother or sister why you are right and they are wrong.

Decimal DilemmaHailey and Xavione are working together to label

the intervals on this number line.

Hailey thinks they should label each interval using thousandths, but Xavione thinks they should use hundredths. Which is more reasonable? Explain why.

Now Isaac joins their group and is confused. Explain how Hailey and Xavione could prove their answer to Isaac, using a representation other than the number line.

Angle ArgumentEleisia doesn’t think knowing benchmark angles

is important and has decided not to learn them.

Write a letter convincing Eleisia of their importance and how you can use benchmark angles to identify and classify other angles.

Pool Problems!

The engineers at Waves Waterpark want to build a new pool, but aren’t sure where it will fit in the park. They are told there is an empty plot of land that has an area of 72 square yards. What are 3 possible dimensions of the pool they could build here? Explain how you know. Include how your knowledge of arrays and multiplication helped you solve this problem.

Magnet Mayhem

Now that you have investigated magnets, use what you have learned to explain why magnets attract and repel other magnets.

Pretend you are the north or south pole of a magnet. Write a narrative from the point of view of this magnetic pole and explain what happens when you come in contact with other magnets. You must include a time when you attract and repel other magnets and explain why it is happening within your story.

Moon JournalThink about what you have

learned about how the Moon appears to change in the night sky.

Write a journal entry describing each phase of the moon. You may write from the point of view of the moon or as a human observing the moon from Earth. Remember to explain each phase and why the observable shape changes.

Call for Conservation

Think about the non-renewable resources humans need to survive. What will happen if this resource isn’t conserved?

Write an argumentative piece to convince your reader to conserve this resource. Be sure to include why this resource is important and ways to conserve.
