Fifth Sunday of Easter May 17, 2020
Our parish school has been closed since mid March, but they continue to do online learning through the school year. Our teachers, students, and parents have been working hard to complete their year, and hope they will be returning to their classrooms in August.
Some of their more recent 8th grade student projects include mak-ing knitted hats for babies (below), and donating money for and help-ing to make fabric masks for a local hospital.
For last week’s Teacher Appreciation Day, the parents scheduled a parade of cars (left). The teachers were in the parking lot waving to their students. Some cars were decorated with balloons and signs say-ing things such as “Thank you teachers, we miss you” and “You don’t just teach, you inspire.” It was uplifting for the teachers and students to see each other.
“Behind the scenes” photos of our livestreamed liturgies
Below and at right: Fr. Joe and Fr. Nicolas presiding at Mass. A few volunteers are there to set up the tripod, cam-era, microphone, computer, and to read the Scriptures. Two Masses are said each day; one in English followed by one in Spanish, and both are uploaded to our website.

We Pray for the Deceased
Please pray for these members of our parish family who passed away recently:
Josefina Cordova, Avelina Montemayor.
May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.
The Reason for our Hope “What is the reason for your hope?” Imagine somebody coming up to you and asking you that question. Not “What are you hoping for?” or “What are you hoping to do?” No, this isn’t about our desires for possessions or aspirations for life, it’s “Why do you hope?” Peter today tells us that we ought to be ready to give an answer to this question. Truth be told, few of us spend much time thinking about why we hope. Luckily, the scriptures today give us our answers. We hope because Christ suffered for us, in order that we might come to God. We hope because we know that, in the Spirit, God grants us another Advo-cate through Christ to remain with us always. No matter what we might hope for, whatever we might hope to do, we must always first know and proclaim the reason for our hope: the presence of God in Christ, with us through the power of the Spirit. A farewell message from Irene Kramer, bulletin editor
After nearly 25 years of doing this parish bulletin every week and working in the St. Justin office, I am retiring.
I have always viewed my time at St. Justin not just as a job, but as a ministry, with its purpose being to help educate and enable people to practice their Catholic Faith. I always tried to offer more than that which was given to me for the bulletin, and to print the most infor-mation that would be of interest to the most people. I also worked in the parish office and helped coordinate our Liturgy Committee, and worked on many projects over the years. A good part of my work was “behind the scenes” in liturgy planning, scheduling, assigning volun-teers, and gathering information for and creating worship aids, bro-chures, and posters, etc. Some call me the parish historian. This start-ed when I wrote the history of the parish for our 40th and 50th anniver-saries and other occasions. I hope that there are future historians out there that will take care of our parish history, and continue to send in photos and items of historical significance to be preserved for our fu-ture parishioners.
Sincere thanks to Aida Gomez, who even before I started, has vol-unteered to type the Spanish bulletin page for us every week. A special remembrance to Connie Messina, our previous bulletin editor. I learned from what she had done before me.
I am forever grateful to our former pastor, Fr. Joe Nettekoven, who hired me, and to my office co-workers who were there when I began and taught me all about working at St. Justin’s: Marge Stahovich, Bar-bara Rhey, and Deacon Ray Duthoy. I have worked with many others as well, and I am blessed to have known every one of them.
I am truly thankful to have gotten to know our current pastor, Fr. Joe Robillard, and the many priests who have come and gone from our parish over the years. They each brought something special and taught me things about our Faith and our traditions. I enjoyed getting to know them as individuals.
One of my favorite things about my job was getting to know so many people in the parish. You are truly inspiring. Your depth of Faith, your commitment to the parish, your compassion to those around you, and your involvement with our ministries and events — they are remarkable. My years of working with the group chairpersons, lectors, Ministers of the Eucharist, and the people I helped who came in the office have demonstrated that every person has their own story and their own faithful commitments. I admire them all.
Thank you to my current office co workers, Laura, Amalia, Ale, and Teresa. I will miss seeing you but I am leaving knowing that the office is in good hands. Amalia will be taking over most of my work duties, and I know she will handle them well. I have enjoyed working with all of you and consider all of you friends.
I never could have imagined that my last few months at St. Justin would be spent working at home in the midst of a pandemic. But I have faith that our parish will rebuild and rise up from this crisis, just as it rose up in 2005-2006 after an arsonist set fire to our church.
All of these experiences have enriched me as a person and have enriched my Faith. I hope that my efforts have helped guide or inform others along the way too.
Signing off for one last time, Irene Kramer Bulletin Editor

Spiritual communion
The Holy Father invites all those watching or listen-ing to the liturgy of the Mass to make a spiritual com-munion. He uses the prayer composed by St. Alphonsus di Liguori:
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Blessed Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if you were already there, and I unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Timely Prayers…
For Workers and People Who Are Unemployed God of Creation, the work of human beings is a participation in your continuing work of creation. Watch over those who are working under difficult or dan-gerous conditions (especially…). Help them stay safe. Extend your support and care to those who have lost—or will lose—a job (especially…). Help them and their families to persevere. Inspire peo-ple who are discovering innovative ways to address pressing needs. Help all who turn new ideas into practical realities (especially…).
Help all of us to contribute to the common good to the best of our ability, through Christ our Lord. For Medical Researchers God of Compassion, we give thanks for the break-throughs of modern medicine, and especially for scien-tists who develop new medications and treatments and researchers who develop and test vaccines. Give them the energy and stamina to do the painstaking research and testing required to demonstrate effectiveness and safety. May efforts to slow the spread of the virus buy precious time until reliable treatments and an effective vaccine change the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. We pray through Christ our Lord. For Seniors and People at Risk God of Mercy, You never abandon your people. Your unconditional love is unfailing. Uphold our sisters and brothers whose underlying condi-tions put them at risk for COVID-19, including the sen-iors in our families, communities, and nursing homes, (and especially… ). During this time when physical separation is necessary, reassure them, and all of us, that bonds of faith, family, and friendship stretch beyond any distance or length of time. We pray through Christ our Lord. For Teachers and Students Fount of truth and wisdom, Jesus mentored his followers not only through dynamic preaching and creative teach-ing, but by the witness of his life and the example of his actions. Watch over the dedicated teachers and students who, for a time, must leave behind in-person classes and, instead, connect online. Inspire all of us to find new ways to learn during this difficult time: by sharing stories, by practicing a new skill or taking on a project, by reflecting on the dedication of doctors, nurses, and
first responders, by taking to heart the example of volunteers and work-
ers who go the extra mile. Help us to keep learning and growing as faithful and ac-tive disciples. We pray through Christ our Lord.
Creating a family prayer space at home
A video presented by Fr. John Monestero
In these days of the pandemic we find ourselves confined
for the most part at home and unable to attend Mass or even visit the church. Let us reclaim the Catholic custom of having a special place, a sacred place in the home for individuals or the whole family to gather for prayer. In Fr. John’s talk he will guide you in how to create a prayer space in your home and the rich Catholic traditions surrounding such a sacred place.

HELP OUT OUR ADVERTISERS Our Sunday bulletin is an important way for us to communi-cate with you, especially during these days of the Coronavirus pandemic. It might be the only way that we can reach some of you. Every bulletin that you receive is paid for through the gener-osity of the businesses that you see advertised on the back cover. Most of these advertisers are members of our local community, and many belong to our parish. We urge you to think of them when you decide to have a meal or other item delivered to your door. Tell the business owners that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertisements in the bulletin. This is one small way that we can work within our own community to weather the challenges that we face. Together we can help each other make it through. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana.
Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness.
For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust.
In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind.
Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts.
We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy.
Shelter us under the mantle of your protection,
keep us in the embrace of your arms,
help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.

icaba allí a Cristo.
R. Gloria a ti, Señor Jesús.
