About the College and the Department:

Introduction to the Theme:

St. Aloysius' College which found its inception in the year 1951, is a college with glorious past, a proud present and a promising future. It is a co-education college which is situated at a very strategic location to cater to the needs of both urban and rural students. The college has been a proud recipient of college with Potential for Excellence by UGC and DIST-FIST Supported & Star College Scheme DBT. The College is re-accredited with A+ Grade by NAAC with CGPA of 3.68/4.00.

The Department of English was founded and established by Rev. Fr. Van. Englan in 1951. It works with the motto of “Persevere-Excel-Promote Quality”. Ever since its inception in the year 1951, the Department has been on an onward march towards excellence. The primary aim of the department is to hone the linguistic skills of the second language learners for whom English Language is a compulsory paper in all undergraduate programmes. Also the department persevere to strengthen the literary talents of the UG & PG student opting for Englsih Literature. We envisage a life of fulfillment and self-realisatn of our students as responsible citizens of India who will contribute meaningfully towards the growth, well- being and sustenance of a better equipped human race. The students graduating from the department have distinguished themselves both in language and literary studies and have earned laurels for the college by their achievements and outstanding success in different walks of life.

A significant post-colonial writer in the English language, Khushwant Singh is known for his clear-cut secularism, wit and a deep passion for poetry. A regular contributor to various national dailies, Singh is also famous for his novel A Train to Pakistan penned in the year 1956. Khushwant Singh, an archipelago of human sons, is perhaps the most widely read author in India. A critically acclaimed litterateur, historian, and journalist, he has the rare quality of conveying his thoughts without taking recourse to jargon or holier-than-thou posturing. Since independence he has been the country's most well- known English writer. In Indian literary history Khushwant Singh's name is bound to evolve as one of the finest historians and novelists, a forthright political commentator, and an outstanding observer and social critic. He is attributed with freethinking. Khushwant Singh's comparisons of social and behavioural characteristics of Indians and Westerners are the examples of his acid wit. He brought history to our doorsteps and quite ideally therefore India describes him as "The Capital's best known living monument". Apart from his literary works, his roles as a lawyer, diplomat, critic, journalist, novelist, humorist, naturalist and politician made Khushwant Singh a man larger than life. Khushwant Singh, like other Indian novelists, explores social, political realities of contemporary Indian life. His main concern is the man and the reality. Unlike the other social writers Khushwant Singh selects his material from the bewildering variety of life and his vision is truly comprehensive. He was a true worshipper of humanism and all his works reflect this. He was committed writer of human interest. We do not find didacticism or moralisation in his writings. Modern Age is an experimental age and every writer is experimenting. The aim of 'Tribute to Khushwant Singh' is to provide a platform from where researches can collectively re-examine the question: 'Why do people read Khushwant Singh?' Khushwant Singh has achieved phenomenal success as a

columnist and writer who sprang from a most unwriterly virtue. He had the knack of seeming to speak directly to the readers. The conference will provide an occasion to rethink the works of the acclaimed writer Khushwant Singh, thereby extending his range and opening new angles of enquiry.
