THE BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY is pleased to offer patrons access to its substantial collections of information about the history of New England and its residents, along with tips and guides for those beginning their own research.

The BPL collection includes published genealogies of families of New England origin, published histories of New England towns and cities—with a primary focus on Massachusetts—and Massachusetts county histories, many of which include genealogical and biographical entries for noted families and citizens.

GETTING STARTEDPrepare for using the library’s significant genealogy resources by visiting one of our helpful guides:

• Genealogy guides.bpl.org/genealogymain

• Newspapers guides.bpl.org/newspapers

HOW TO FIND WHAT YOU NEED: OUR CATALOGUING SYSTEMWhen you are prepared to begin your research, you can come directly to the Library to work with a librarian, or you can peruse our catalogues to discover what we have—and what you need.

Our catalogues include: • The Online Catalog can be searched remotely

without a library card at www.bpl.org (mainly 1974-present).

• The Microfiche Catalog for additional reference materials located in the McKim Building.

• The Genealogy Card File is located in Research Services. The card file includes published genealogy and vertical file materials. In general, these materials must be requested from the Book Delivery Desk.

Useful sample catalog subject headings include: • For Handbooks/How To Guides:

• Genealogy–Handbooks, Manuals, etc.

• Spain–Genealogy–Handbooks, Manuals, etc. (insert appropriate country at the beginning)

• African Americans–Genealogy–Handbooks, Manuals, etc. (insert appropriate ethnic group at the beginning)

• For Vital Records: Register of Births, etc.–Massachusetts–Boston or Boston (Mass.)–Statistics, Vital. (insert appropriate state and city/town)

• For Town Histories: Spencer (Mass.)–History. (insert appropriate state and city/town)

ACCESSAs always, feel free to ask for assistance at the Research Services desk, at the Central Library in Copley Square. In addition, you can call to request an appointment at the Norman B. Leventhal Map and Education Center.

Please note that many of the items in the Library’s collection can only be obtained from the Research Library Stacks by submitting a request slip to the Delivery Desk. Turnaround time is approximately 15-30 minutes. Please note that at this time, some materials are stored off-site and may be inaccessible; where possible, please call ahead for details.

To access closed-stack materials, patrons will need to present a Massachusetts library card or Research Card. If you do not have a card, you may obtain one free of charge, at the Delivery Desk on the second floor or at the Borrower Services desk at the Boylston Street entrance.
