Dear Campus Bible Church,

We hope this will be a helpful guide for you this morning as we sing, pray and look at God’s Word together. Things are going to look a little different for us as we cannot currently meet together in person, but our desire is that we can still support each other and point each other to Jesus during this time.

The current situation is unfortunate, but we think it’s a great opportunity to support, encourage and serve one another in different ways. So as long as these circumstances persist, we hope you’ll use these Sunday morning times to gather with your family or a small friend group and worship God together.

Of course our plans may change Sunday to Sunday at this point, so please keep checking your emails and the church website for more information. This is a great opportunity to love one another and to praise the Lord regardless of our circumstances. Please reach out to to our pastoral staff and the rest of the Elders if you need anything, and we look forward to gathering once again soon.

Pastor Kenton Rahn

“Pilgrims in a Foreign Land” 1 Peter 2:11-12

1 Peter: The Transforming Epistle 1 Peter 2:11-12 – “Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul. Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation.” I. The Pilgrim’s Identity

A. We are beloved (1Jn 4:9-10)

B. We are aliens and strangers (Heb 11:13-16; 1Jn 2:15-17) II. The Pilgrim’s Private War

“I urge you” –

“To abstain from” – • Literally “to be away from, to have distance from.”

“Fleshly lusts” – (Gal 5:19-21) • Appetites or desires that come from our fallen human nature.

“Which war against the soul” –

How do we abstain from fleshly lusts? (Gal 5:16-18)

III. The Pilgrim’s Public Witness

A. Our behavior should be exemplary

B. Our behavior may provoke hostility (2Tim 3:12)

C. Our behavior should be public, not just private (Mt 5:13-16)

IV. The Pilgrim’s Positive Influence William Barclay: “Every Christian is an advertisement for Christianity; by his life he either commends it to others or makes them think less of it.”

Discussion Questions: 1. A pilgrim is a person who journeys in a foreign land. As a Christian, what are some of the ways you feel like

a stranger in this world? 2. Read 1 John 2:15-17. From a pilgrim’s point of view, are there any things in the world you love too much? 3. All Christians battle with sinful desires. How do we defeat them? 4. Read Matthew 5:13-16. Why do you think we sometimes shy away from doing good works in front of

people? 5. Action Item: Brainstorm together and come up with a list of ways you can help and bless other people

during this pandemic. Pick at least one or two that you will commit to doing this week.
