1Central Saint Martins (CSM) has developed the School at Home for 13 to 16 Year Olds (Online Short Course) to meet the demands of our younger international students and the current world restrictions. This course has been designed with the flexibility to allow you to join the community at CSM from wherever you are in the world, so that there is no need to travel to London to study with us.
We have been running online courses since 2012 and find that they are popular for students based in the UK and abroad. All of our courses are fully interactive and allow for engagement with your tutor and other students, while providing an online classroom with set assignments, with tutor feedback. All sessions are recorded and available to you as an archive for up to 3 months after the course has been completed, so you can go back and watch the tutor’s lessons as many times as you like during that time.
The courses have been designed specifically to run online with international teenagers in mind. The sessions will all include an introduction to a topic, time to work independently or within groups under the guidance of your tutor and individual feedback sessions. This course will allow for you to experience the best of our studios and workshops, led by our amazing tutors, from the comfort of your own home!

HOW ONLINE LEARNING WORKS
Similar to our studio classrooms, all of our online classrooms are places that celebrate our style of learning, which is focused on ‘learning through doing’ while you experiment with new techniques and mediums that will allow you to develop your artistic practice.
YOU WILL NEED:
• A Google Chrome web browser - the most up to date version.
• A microphone and headphones so you can talk/hear your tutor - a headset with a built-in microphone is recommended.
• A webcam - so your tutor is able to see you.
• A strong internet connection via ethernet or WiFi - 2G, 3G or 4G will not be strong enough and we wouldn’t want you to lose connection during a class.
• No additional software is required to be downloaded, we would advise ensuring you have all the above ready before your first lesson.
• After you book a course and closer to the course start date, approximately 24 hours, you will receive an email link to join the online session itself to use at the scheduled time of the course starting.
UAL’S VIRTUAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
The lessons take place in UAL’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which is an online space built specifically to deliver online sessions.
The VLE is where you’ll be able to see your tutor - they can talk with you, deliver the lesson and show examples or demonstrations here.
The VLE is also where you and the rest of the class can interact and respond to your tutor, share or upload work and take part in classroom activities.
In addition to class hours, you will also need a couple of hours to review reference materials and complete any assignments set in your lessons.
Classes are recorded and archived, accessible from the next day, after your lesson. The recordings are also available to you for up to three months after your course has finished. So, if you are unable to attend a live session, or would like to revisit something mentioned in class, you can catch up with the recordings in your own time. But we would always recommend that you try and attend all the scheduled live sessions.

22SAFEGUARDING POLICY
We take the safety of our students very seriously. In line with the practice of our studio based courses, all of our online short course tutors that teach teenage students are also DBS checked annually. A DBS check is a record of a person’s criminal convictions and cautions – carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service in the United Kingdom.
All student, tutor and any teaching support staff interaction takes place within the VLE, which allows for there to be a moderator, in addition to the tutor / teaching staff, that can ensure that the environment is consistently safe for our students.
All chat facilities are moderated and there is no need for any communication to take place outside of the VLE.
We expect all students to work within the VLE in a positive and collaborative manner with the tutor, teaching staff and other students. To fully support this initiative and to ensure that the learning experience is enjoyed by all students, we have zero tolerance policy on any cyber-bullying. Any student that partakes in any deliberate activities in order to make any student feel unwelcome or unsafe in the classroom will be immediately removed from the course.
23SUMMARY
We are really pleased to offer these 2 new online courses for students aged 13 to 16 as a learning option. Our tutors have developed a dynamic programme that will engage and challenge students so that they can use their holidays from school in order to develop their skills, build their experience working with new materials and gain a learning experience that focuses on the Central Saint Martins way of teaching. The virtual classroom will allow students to work collaboratively with students around the world and meet students that have similar interests.
