Introduction

• The way that we teach and learn is continually being impacted by the proliferation of technology in our society.

• The development of the Internet has made it possible to create dynamic courses and make them available to students located around the world.

• Numerous universities, colleges, schools, and organizations have taken advantage of the opportunities made available through distance education.

• Distance learning has become a viable choice for instructional programs.

Distance Education

• means that instruction is created in one place and delivered to students in a different place. Online teaching.

Online teaching

• is a type of distance education involving the use of computer technology to deliver courses through the Internet.

Characteristics of effective online teaching

Course content should be :1. Coverage 2. Accuracy 3. Currency

Characteristics of effective online teaching

Delivery of instructions1. Appropriateness of tools used to deliver

course materials e.g. PowerPoint lecture or video conference

2. Usefulness of course website for e.g. instruction to online activities

Characteristics of effective online teaching

Communication and instructions during online teaching:

1. Adequate communication with students via email ,phone ..etc

2. Availability to respond to student questions 3. Frequency of feed back during the course 4. Means of the feedback in learning process 5. Management &facilitations for e.g. discussions

&conferences .

How to measure the effectiveness of online teaching courses ?

• Student outcomes, such as grades and test scores.

• Student attitudes about learning through distance education.

• Overall student satisfaction toward distance learning.

Benefit of online teaching • Flexibility: Students are free to learn when it fits their schedules.

• Accessibility: Students have greater access to instructional programs.

• Time and Cost Efficiency: 1. There is no set time you need to be at your computer.2. Teaching degree online classes require no commute.3. low costs .

Disadvantage • There is no immediate support system. You have to email questions and then wait

for answers...which might be too brief, or more convoluted when typed in a message

• You cannot ask the professor a question to clarify a point that comes to mind.

• students feel disconnected from the rest of the students and from the instructor.

• Many students, especially older students not exposed to technology during their younger years, do not know how to work the equipment for online classes including the online applications and interfaces, emails and how to submit assignments appropriately.
