Prof. Dr. Kola Akinsomi is an Associate Professor in Real Estate Finance & Investments at the University of Witwatersrand (WITS), South Africa and Chief Economist of RealQuant Analytics. Prof. Dr. Akinsomi is the Vice-President of the African Real Estate Society, Director of the International Real Estate Society and Chair of the Future Leaders of the American Real Estate Society.

The goal of Module one is to provide participants with an understanding of the concepts and fundamentals of real estate investment trusts (REITs). Particular emphasis is on REITs Valuation, REITs Capital Structure and understanding REITs structure from the largest market capitalized REITs regime in the world- The United States
Module one on the introduction to REITs, REITs valuation and REITs capital structure introduces participants to the structure and regulatory framework of REITs. Participants are introduced to how REITs are valued.
Participants would be taught the capital structure decisions REITs manager makes and how his can impact REITs value. Participants would learn firsthand from guest lecturers who have firsthand experience on REITs financing and Management.

The goal of Module 2 is to provide participants with an understanding of the management of REITs property portfolio (Internal and External Management Structures). Particular emphasis is on the role of REITs in a mixed asset portfolio. A REITs case study to illustrate the value chain of REITs and REITs structure from a practical point of view.
Module two on the management structure of REITs, REITs as an asset class and REITs in a mixed asset portfolio introduces participants to the REITs value chain. Participants are introduced to how REITs are managed (internal or external management structures).
Participants would be taught role of REITs as an asset class as well as the role REITs plays in a mixed asset portfolio. Participants would learn firsthand from guest lecturers who have firsthand experience on REITs management and REITs value chain.

Professor Morris is a seasoned commercial real estate executive with deep expertise in property & portfolio acquisitions, corporate strategy design and execution, capital markets and executive leadership. Prof Morris has worked for three (3) Best-in-Class REITs as a senior executive responsible for property acquisitions, JV developments, capital markets & financings: Boston Properties Director of Acquisitions; Charles E. Smith (Archstone-Smith) Director of Acquisitions and Lerner Enterprises' LMH Realty Group LLC, a private equity platform sponsored and owned by Lerner, Morris & Hillman. He is a nationally recognized REIT expert & brings real world experience to life in the classroom & has helped several students secure positions at public REITs

Hakeem Ogunniran is a leading thought leader on African real estate structuring, funding and delivery and has been described as having a ‘unique understanding of the connection between financial models, capital markets and brick and mortar all within the context of Africa’s complex and challenging operating environment’. He possesses extensive experience in capital raising, having led five major capital raises including the floatation of a Real Estate Investment Trust over an eight-year period. A frequent speaker at international conferences, seminars and retreats, he was the Lead Speaker for Africa at the 1st International Conference on Corporate Governance at Shanghai, China, in May 2010.

Profile Shamin A. Sookia joined Perigeum Capital as Managing Director as from July 2016, following a 30‐year career spanning across various fields including auditing, taxation, management and consultancy services, global business and financial restructuring. Perigeum Capital Ltd is a boutique corporate finance firm licensed by the Financial Services Commission of Mauritius and is positioned as a key player in the Mauritian capital markets industry.

Andrea graduated with a BSc Hons degree in Mathematics and Management from King’s College, London. He immigrated to South Africa in 1995 and initially worked as a Commercial Property Broker in Bellville. He was one of the founding members of a food import business (Rialto Foods) in April 1998 and was instrumental in growing this business into the Italian food importer of choice of Woolworths. He sold his shares in Rialto in 2006 and formed the Chiluan Property Group and developed six A-grade distribution facilities for top quality tenants. Chiluan sold its distribution assets to Equites on listing. His intimate knowledge of the industrial market, and ability to research and find opportunities, market, build and manage all his properties in-house, has resulted in Andrea being able to outperform his competition and secure long term A-grade income tenants in the Cape Town industrial market.

Calvin Schnure is Senior Vice President, Research & Economic Analysis, and joined Nareit in March 2011. He analyzes developments in the macro economy and their impact on REITs and commercial property markets, and on financial returns to REITs. He monitors performance of mortgage REITs and conditions in the U.S. mortgage market. He also conducts original research on REITs’ stock market returns and economic fundamentals. Calvin began his professional career in the 1990s as Economist at the Federal Reserve Board. While at the Fed he analyzed the non-bank financial sectors for the Flow of Funds Accounts, corporate profits and commercial paper markets in the Capital Markets group, and also analyzed business fixed investment, including capital spending on nonresidential structures, for the Fed’s economic forecast. Subsequently he was Vice President for US Economics at JPMorganChase, where he analyzed and forecast economic and financial market conditions, and advised senior management and clients. He was Senior Economist at the International Monetary Fund from 2002 through 2006, and Director of Economic Analysis at Freddie Mac from 2006 through 2011. Calvin earned a B.A. in Economics from Williams College, a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School at Tufts University, and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley.
