The Port Washington-Saukville School District does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, or age in its programs and activities and
provides equal access to designated youth groups. The following person has been designated to handle inquiries regarding the non-discrimination policies: Director of

NEWS RELEASE
FROM: Duane A Woelfel, Director of Special Services
RE: Developmental Screening
The Port Washington-Saukville School District will be holding developmental screenings of three- and four-year-old children. If parents feel their child is developing comparatively well, it is not necessary to have them screened at this time. Following are the screening dates for the 2019-2020 school year:
Thursday, September 26, 2019 Wednesday, January 22, 2020
Please call Special Services at 262-268-6079 to make an appointment. The screenings will be scheduled by appointment only on each date.
Parents who have a child who seems to be behind other children in development are strongly encouraged to bring their child to this screening. There have been many studies which have proven that the earlier a concern is addressed the less severe it will be after a child starts school.
If a child is found to have difficulties that interfere with learning, we would determine if a child has an impairment which requires special educational programming. There are a number of types of impairments, including the following: speech impairment, learning disability, visual disability, hearing impairment, physical disability, autism, and developmental delay. Those children who qualify will be able to participate in our district’s early childhood program. The screening, subsequent testing, and enrollment in the early childhood program are offered at no cost to parents.

The Incredible Years Mondays, September 30th – November 18th, 3:45 – 5:15pm
FREE Workshop – you must register by September 25, 2019
Refreshments provided; *Free childcare available
The Incredible Years is an 8-week evidence-based parenting program designed to help promote the social,
emotional, and academic success of kids ages 2-14. Parents learn how to prevent, reduce, and respond to
emotional challenges in children through a positive and nurturing approach. The course introduces
developmentally appropriate and consistent responses to increase children’s self-esteem, reduce conflict in
the home and promote a strong and healthy family. The program will also allow parents to build a support
network with other parents experiencing similar challenges.
The program promotes your child’s social and emotional skills by:
Strengthening the child’s social skills and appropriate play skills (turn taking, waiting, asking, sharing,
helping, complimenting).
Promoting the child’s use of self-control strategies such as effective problem-solving steps.
Increasing his/her emotional awareness by labeling feelings, recognizing the differing views of oneself
and others and enhancing perspective.
Boosting academic success, reading and school readiness.
Reducing defiance, aggressive behavior, and related conduct problems such as noncompliance, peer
aggression and rejection, bullying, stealing and lying.
Increasing the child’s self-esteem, self-confidence and building positive relationships with parents.
The program promotes parenting skills, builds parent’s confidence and strengthens families through:
A nurturing and positive parenting approach.
Positive strategies to manage negative behavior that include natural and logical consequences,
ignoring and redirecting.
Improved parents’ problem solving and communication skills.
Identifying ways to build a support system, to network and to build positive relationships with schools.
Developing skills to set up predictable routines and schedules and establish house rules.
Teaching child stages of development and appropriate developmental expectations.
Held at Dunwiddie Elementary School in Port Washington
