Monday 12 Noon: Letters to the Editor

PanelistTo commemorate March as Social Work Month, Danelle Locklear (third from left), Elementary Social Worker for J.W. McLauchlin and Sandy Grove Elementary, was invited to be a panelist at the 2nd annual “Evening of Social Work” event sponsored by the NASW-NC Fayetteville Local Program Unit. Among the panelists were social workers from many areas of social work (military, DSS, school, medical, private practice) to share with the community their efforts in supporting and working with families.

The cold, wet winter experi-enced in this area means more potholes will be popping up over the coming months, and the state Department of Transportation says it will have patching crews out in full force attacking them.

Because potholes can quickly form without warning, NCDOT urges motorists to pay special attention to the roadway and be on the lookout. Potholes are com-mon during winter months when moisture seeps into cracks in the pavement, freezes, expands and then thaws. When the ice expands, it causes the cracks to widen and the asphalt layer to rise. Traffic then loosens the pavement, which eventually creates a pothole.

Motorists can also help the department by reporting potholes at 1-877-368-4968, or online at www.ncdot.gov/contact. Click on “County Contacts” on the left of your screen and then choose the county. The email form will be sent to the local NCDOT office. To help crews locate the pothole, DOT says, be sure to provide as much informa-tion as possible about its location, including the city or county, road name, nearest intersection, which lane the pothole is in, and the size and depth of the pothole. If a pothole is in a work zone, the contractor will be notified and is responsible for fixing it. You should contact your local municipality to report a

pothole on a road that is not main-tained by DOT.

The location, size and depth of the pothole determine its priority. Potholes within travel lanes of major routes will be first priority. Potholes on shoulders will be less of a priority, as will shallow ones.

Since most asphalt plants are not operating during winter months and “hot mix” asphalt is not available, crews will use “cold patch,” as well as spray patchers, to fix the holes as an interim treat-ment. “Cold patch” is a premix that NCDOT stockpiles for winter pothole response. Crews will per-form permanent patches with hot mix when it is available.

The motor club AAA offers the following tips when encountering a pothole:

Avoid swerving. Swerving can cause loss of vehicle control;

Slow down. Carefully avoid impact with potholes. If a pothole can’t be avoided slow down. Hitting a pothole at a high speed increases the chance of damage to the vehicle, and losing control;

Roll through. Rolling through the pothole is better than braking rapidly;

Properly inflate tires. Over-inflated and under-inflated tires increase risk of tire and wheel damage; and

Avoid puddles that may con-ceal a deep pothole.

This time of year, many of us are looking out the window from the kitchen or den and thinking about what spring will bring. Cold weather has a way of leading our thoughts to flowers and new leaves emerging with fresh spring green colors. The next thought might be about the desire to fix up the landscape.

A well designed landscape can create some amazing views for family, friends and passersby to enjoy. Before jumping out there with a shovel and work gloves in hand, take a moment and think about the process that goes into creating a wonderful, functional landscape. With the cold weather, there is time to stop and create a plot plan, followed by a site analysis, location of use areas and time to talk with family about the landscape. From this, the design and construction can begin, with actual planting coming last in the process, but definitely not least.

First, take out a sheet of paper for drawing the plot plan. Find all the boundaries (property lines, placement of the house on the property, driveways, walkways

and other significant features). This will be your drawing to begin the redesign of your landscape. Locate your home by measuring all the dimensions of your home and finding the closest property line and a corner of the property. Be sure to measure two points on one side of the house to the closest property line to align the house correctly.

Shade tolerant plants for the shady areas and sun/heat tolerant plants for the full sun areas. Note sights and sounds. Are there any areas you want to create a hedge to buffer the noise or block the view? Maybe there is a spot in the backyard that can be enhanced with a backdrop of ever-green shrubs. Understanding your

soil needs to create an improved growing area for the roots of your plants is very important. Take soil samples to determine the soil pH and nutrient needs. Don’t forget about adding compost to the soil for increased nutrient and water holding capacity.

Always include your family in the discussion process when considering a landscape. Outdoor areas such as grilling, patio and play areas are important for all to enjoy. Areas often overlooked are areas for animals, trash cans, stor-age areas and vegetable gardens.

Always remember there are three major areas of the landscape: public, private and service. The public area is one most often seen. Usually it is the front yard and driveway. Design it so that it has flowing landscape lines around the landscape beds; often turf areas help define these loca-tions. Remember not to plant large plant material where it blocks the visibility of the front door or windows. The private area is usu-ally the family areas or backyard. Think of this as the areas you want to relax or as a place to allow space

for children and pets to release energy through play.

The utility area can be found in several places around the house. Is the trash can location hidden from site with a fence or plants? The storage building for garden tools can be located adjacent to the family area with landscaping separating it physically from the private family area. A point to think about is that the vegetable/flower garden is considered utility but it can also be an attractive part of the landscape and easily mixed in with the private area landscape.
