Almost 150 years havepassed since that historicmorning when Yosef Riv-lin, Yoel Moshe Salomon,and their comrades laid thecornerstone for NachalatShiva. This, the third Jewishneighborhood beyond thewalls, has undergone many

transformations but stillretains its old-fashionedcharm with its stone wallsand tiled roofs. We willtour the picturesque lanesand charming corners ofthe neighborhood, meet-

company, in 1920 this was a girl's

school and later became a military

headquarters. The girls see neither

the dancers or soldiers but there is

one girl who dreams: she senses thepresence of something else in the

room. Her fears are represented by

the soldiers and her hopes of free-

dom, by the dancers.

Jerusalem is unmatched as a city re-

nowned for piyut, song, writing and

creativity, firing the imagination

of creative artists from all over the

world who respond passionately to

its charms.

For years Laurent Levy studied the

phenomenon of creativity surround-

ing Jerusalem, until reaching his de-

cision to establish Kikar Hamusica, in

picturesque Nahalat Shiva. Activity

in the square allows an international

stage for creativity in varied fields:

stage, school for music, dance, and

comedy; museum of Hebrew music,

auditorium, recording studio, pub,

restaurants, hotel.

Kikar Hamusica is an important base

for connecting different peoples,

religions, and cultures, joining the

style. Azoulay, with a Masters degree

from Bezalel Art Aca-demy, won two

awards for excellence in sculpture and

Judaica, and exhibits his works at mu-

dem. Clothing and accessories from

all over the world reflect the colorful

personality of Reuma, who personal-

Even before the Ben-Yehuda pedes-

trian mall existed, Café Rimon was

established in the city center. Now

more than 60 years later, passersby

can enjoy a dairy meal at Rimon Café

or a rich meat meal at the adjacent

"Rimon Bistro". Yosef Rimon is a na-

tive Jerusalemite, and his eyes sparkle

when he reminisces about his guests:

partner – Regina and their children,

For almost half a century, veteran

Jerusalemites have been drinking

coffee at Kadosh, a family-run caféthat evokes memories of Paris in the

heart of Jerusalem. Founded in 1967

by Meir Kadosh and now operated

together with son Itzik and daugh-

ter-in-law Keren. They added a

new, contemporary menu but kept

the tradition of quality. Fish, pasta,

sandwiches, plus a bakery that turns

out croissants, breads, and cookies

whose intoxicating aroma is irresist-

ible even to the regular clientele.

Kadosh offers a new service: cate-

ring and party buffet platters.

In a beautiful 200 year-old build-

ing in the heart of Jerusalem lies

Darna, offering authentic Moroc-

can hospitality. ‘Darna’ means ‘our

home’ and the restaurant reflects

the greeting Darna darcum “Our

home is your home”.

Ilan Sibony opened Darna af-

ter visiting Morocco, and repro-

duced the flavors, sounds, colors,

and sights. Embellished arches,

stained-glass windows, colorful

tiles, silver utensils, ceramics, wait-

ers’ costumes – all carefully cho-

sen from select Moroccan work-

shops. Ilan also serves delicacies he

learned to prepare in the palace

kitchen. Main courses served in a

tajin, cooked over coals, from lambslow-cooked and seasoned with

dried fruit to couscous with all the

trimmings. There are small rooms

for intimate parties alongside

large halls for special events, and

in every one, Sibony demonstrates

his love for people and hospitality.

The Mount Zion Hotel on Hebron

Road is a slice of Jerusalem history.

Built in 1860 as an Eye Hospital, itwas transformed into a hotel 30 years

ago. The historic building integrates

architectural styles: arched windows

and terraces overlooking Hinnom

Valley, the Old City walls, David’s

Citadel, and Yemin Moshe. The

décor is Mediterranean style, the

atmosphere charming and unique.

The spa, with an authentic Hammam,
