With the transition from the 512-byte to the 4k-byte sector storage standard, many drives are experiencing performance degradation between 20 and 40 percent due to partition misalignment. Misalignment can appear under a number of different scenarios. For companies utilizing virtual environments, performance problems are amplified. "As a leading IT services companies in the U.S., we are in the trenches working side-by-side with our clients and as a result, we are at the forefront for offering only the best software solutions for our customers," said Rob Flannery, SVP of National Sales "We decided to partner with Paragon because we found their service and products to be top-notch and at an attractive price for our clients." "We see many companies struggle with alignment issues," said Daniel Eickhoff, director of channel sales at Paragon Software Group. "The performance issues are critical, but IT managers are often unfamiliar with the problem of misalignment and unsure about the best course of action to resolve the issue with minimal impact on their organization - our software simplifies the alignment process to get their servers humming at full speed again as quickly as possible." "We are proud to be partnering with Insight Integrated Systems to provide their customers with affordable and proven solutions," said Eickhoff.

Who May Be Affected by Partition Misalignment? Computer systems within companies are being affected by partition misalignment; whether running one virtual server or 1,000 - if virtual disks are misaligned, applications, databases, etc. are running at sub-optimal performance. Almost every storage device, storage system architecture and application is vulnerable to partition misalignment, including Advanced format (AF) hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid state drives (SSDs) Database applications, storage virtualization environments, RAID and other distributed data architectures Problems with misalignment increase as the number of storage devices in the network increases. Misalignment of the logical partition sectors and actual physical sectors leads to redundant read/write operations, which results in a critical decrease in I/O performance and drive longevity. With the Paragon Alignment Tool (PAT) Enterprise Edition, you can align your drive to eliminate these problems. Other available editions are: PAT ESX, PAT Scriptable Staging Edition and PAT NetApp Edition. HDM 11 Server provides a backup and disaster recovery software solution for physical and virtual environments. The product offers the ability to perform instant system recovery and bare-metal restores to dissimilar hardware. HDM includes 4K-aware migration and virtualization utilities, as well as advanced partitioning and data wiping tools.

Idealstor joins with Paragon Software Group improving data protection and backup portability WEDNESDAY, 08 FEBRUARY 2012 06:52

2012 Press Coverage

Idealstor, a manufacturer of removable disk-to-disk backup solutions, announced Tuesday that they are now offering Drive Backup Server software from backup and recovery publisher Paragon Software Group as an integrated component of their backup systems. Combining the best attributes of Idealstor and Paragon, this new offering promises to deliver an enhanced level of protection and backup portability for Windows servers, virtual machines, databases and desktops. Idealstor manufactures removable disk backup systems that are designed to replace or augment tape backup by using SATA disks as portable backup media. Systems range in capacity from 1 removable drive bay up to 8, with the ability to use up to a 4TB disk per bay (max system capacity currently 32TB). Unlike most disk to disk backup systems that are designed for storing data like NAS, SAN or RAID, Idealstor uses a combination of hardware and software making the disks ejectable so they can be sent offsite for storage and disaster recovery. With the addition of Drive Backup Server from Paragon Software Group, Idealstor is now able to offer a revolutionary hardware solution that lets you fully recover your servers or virtual machines anytime, anywhere. Drive Backup Server from Paragon Software utilizes sector-based backups, giving server administrators the ability to image an entire server including files, data and applications. When the backup is complete, Paragon lets users dial in the level of recovery needed including file-based recovery, bare metal system restore and even individual email recovery for Microsoft Exchange. “We are happy to welcome Idealstor as our newest partner,” said Tom Fedro, president of Paragon Software Group. “Idealstor hardware paired with our Drive Backup Server software provides a complete turnkey solution for customers.” Traditionally, these Paragon system images were sent to local disk storage, which could then be backed up to tape or the cloud to store this critical data offsite. By combining Paragon’s software with Idealstor removable disk media, images can now be backed up straight to portable disk media, which in turn can then be stored in any location, offering flexible backup and disaster recovery. “We are very excited to announce our partnership with Paragon Software Group and to be able to offer their award winning disaster recovery software with our backup systems,” said Nandan Arora, chief technology officer at Idealstor. “We’ve been in the backup game since 2003 and have never come across a more complete software solution. By bundling Paragon’s Drive Backup Server with our removable disk hardware we feel we have an unmatched solution in the market that will allow our customers and channel partners even more options when it comes to protecting their critical data.”

From PC to Mac: my opinion, 10-months later

21

Summary: 10 months ago, I bought a Mac after 15 years of Windows usage! Did I “switch” permanently, sell the Mac, or something else altogether? The answer awaits herein… Last year, I decided to take the plunge into the world of OS X (as well as iOS, for that matter). It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 months already, but I figure it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty with an update. I love how passionate users are about their operating systems, but for all of you OS X users who hoped to see me “switch” after ~3-4 months, I’m sorry to say that I still prefer Windows 7; HOWEVER, don’t go lambasting me in the comments just yet! The reason I haven’t “switched” has everything to do with why I bought a Mac in the first place: to learn a new skill set.

As my regular readership knows, I am not exactly a fan of brand loyalty, because I feel that such a mentality sells people short on products they might enjoy (see: Thank you Microsoft, Apple, and Google). Instead, I’m an advocate of a much more flexible philosophy: use what works for you. And that’s exactly what I do.

From PC to Mac: my opinion, 10-months later (Cont.)

22

Now, 10 months later, here are the things I use my MacBook Air for: iOS development: As I recently wrote about, I’ve decided to learn mobile development — specifically, iOS. At the moment, my MacBook Air is the tool for this job. This isn’t a decision I saw coming when I purchased the device, but when I did make it, I already had the right tool for the job. Writing: Most of my writing is done on my MacBook Air. It took me a while to get used to its keyboard layout and all of the multi-key shortcuts needed to perform tasks that only require one key on a PC (such as the delete key), but, overall, I quite enjoy writing on it — which is good, considering how much I write. Traveling: Prior to my MacBook Air, I took my Alienware m11x with me everywhere I went — primarily, due to its gaming power. Now, when I travel, I rarely engage in PC gaming, so handing over the travel duties to my MacBook Air is a no-brainer. It’s lightweight, compact, and plays home to the two most important facets of my work-related life: writing and mobile development. Ladies: I enjoy walking around with it to impress the ladies. Though I’ve long-since adapted to most of the differences between OS X and Windows, it was incredibly frustrating initially — so much so, that I even considered returning my Mac. But, I persevered, and now, a long-time Windows-user friend of mine is going through many of the same tribulations. As such, I was reminded of the very first application I purchased for my Mac: Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X. Basically, this little wonder allows you to read/write/modify NTFS partitions (the file system used by Windows in NT, 2000, XP, Vista, and 7). That means you’ll be able to freely move data between Windows and OS X. As a word of caution, I should also note that I’ve seen a number of complaints from people attempting to use Paragon’s software; however, my experiences have been 100% painless using it on OS X Lion, but your mileage may vary.

23

Anyway, I still use PC for gaming, research, browsing, video editing, and far more. There are just too many applications I use for those purposes that are PC-only. The right tool for the job; that’s what I’m an advocate of. Why focus on completely “switching” if you don’t feel it’s necessary to do as such? I was open to the possibility, but I had a feeling the end result would be just as it is: me, a PC user and a Mac user. (And for what it’s worth, my phone is an Android-powered device.) All-in-all, the venture was well-worth the price — but that’s taking largely into consideration the fact that I’ve recently gotten into iOS development. If you’re looking to “switch” completely, I think it would be worth the price, but again, there are many ways I use Windows that I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to on any other OS, so be sure to take that into consideration before you take the leap. Is anyone else out there a fan of simply using what works for them, and not just what works within what a particular brand has to offer? Alternately, have you ever tried to “switch” from PC to Mac, or vice versa? Let me know your thoughts/experiences in the comments below! -Stephen Chapman

Why I Hate Backup

24

Summary: Backup disgusts me. It is the white flag of defeat in a never-ending battle to preserve our stuff against storage devices that don’t store reliably. And it’s boring. A few weeks ago was World Backup Day, a worthy attempt to get people to backup and to check their restores. But I couldn’t get excited about it. Which led me to think about why? After all, I backup daily. I encourage my friends to backup and help them set up good backup strategies. Then I saw this press release from Paragon Software, a maker of storage management and data protection software, from a survey of their Hard Disk Manager customers. Remember, these are people who bought the software, which means they are far savvier than most users. The headline: A Significant Number of Home PC Users Don’t Practice Effective Personal Data Safety Measures. My favorite: 15% of Paragon’s customers who do backup - not all do - backup to the same disk drive that has their data.

Why I Hate Backup (Cont.)

25

My head hurts. Where to start? But I don’t blame consumers for not understanding backup. I blame storage companies for building devices that can’t preserve our data. Virtually all storage devices and systems should come with a bright orange sticker that says “Data loss guaranteed if you don’t backup!” Yes, that’s a buzz killer. But it needs to be - until someone perfects highly reliable storage. The Storage Bits take There are storage systems that don’t require backup - one of which survived Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. They rely on data replication and geographic separation. But for the mobile device world - where your data is one theft away from loss - the goal has to be to make backup automatic and invisible. You get your new device, connect to the web and your data starts repopulating your device. Or get rid of local storage entirely. But can you trust the cloud? This isn’t an easy problem or it would have been already solved. But we need storage that is as reliable as a book. When was the last time you backed up a book? Inventors, the world is waiting. Comments welcome, of course. I quadruple copy critical data, both locally and into the cloud.

Paragon Software Hard Disk Manager 12 Professional review

26

Paragon Hard Disk Manager 12 Professional is as comprehensive a toolset for hard drives as you'll find. It has full backup, imaging, and partitioning capabilities, and it also supports virtualisation software such as VirtualBox and VMware by allowing you to create virtual machines for those programs. HDM hasn't changed a whole lot since the last version; it was already so comprehensive, however, that Paragon simply didn't have that much to add. The short list of partition functions includes creating, moving, formatting, deleting, backing up, burning to CD, converting the file system, and wiping. You can do the same things with entire disks, as well as convert them from MBR to GPT. You can also back up and restore individual files and folders.

Included in HDM 12 Pro are all the features offered in the company's Virtualization Manager:

You can convert a partition to a virtual machine and back, convert a Windows 7 backup image to a VM, and restore from a VM to diverse hardware. The program also handles dynamic disks, merges images, manages multiple backups in archives, and performs a host of other tasks I don't have the room to discuss here. A features list comparison between the professional edition and the less expensive suite version is available at the company's website. I love the everything-under-one-roof concept of HDM 12's interface. It's far more convenient than jumping around between modules, as with other programs such as Acronis True Image and Disk Director. I also like the fact that you define a series of actions, and then set them in motion using the Apply button. However, I don't see why the program needs to instill even a slight hint of paranoia by asking if you really want to apply the changes when all you're doing is backing up. (On the other hand, you can set several backup jobs to go off consecutively using the define/apply methodology.) On top of that, while the interface is fairly straightforward, I'd rather see standard Windows file dialog boxes, which are to my mind easier to use than Paragon's custom boxes.

Editorial Review of Paragon Hard Disk Manager Professional (Continued) For version 12, Paragon is touting a new imaging engine with better performance. Normally I dismiss claims like this as overblown before I've even tested them, and usually I'm correct in my assumptions. In this case, though, I found HDM 12 to be not only fast but also noninterfering. In fact, I wrote the majority of this review with the program humming away in the background, and I forgot that it was running.

One feature that is missing from HDM 12 is the ability to mount an image as a virtual hard drive that you can peruse in Windows Explorer. R-Drive Image and True Image do this, and I've found it to be a handy way to quickly pull a file or two out of a backup. HDM 12 lets you connect to an image to perform partition and other operations on it, but doesn't mount it.

Backup, virtual machines, partitioning, conversion--Hard Drive Manager 12 Professional is a powerful toolkit. At $100, it is a bit pricey for the average user, so be sure to check out the aforementioned $50 suite version to see if that will cover your needs. Note: The Download button takes you to the vendor's site, where you must register to download the latest version of the software. --Jon L. Jacobi

Paragon Software has released Drive Backup 11 ($95.95 for Workstation), the latest edition of its business-oriented tool. Paragon Software has released Drive Backup 11 ($95.95 for Workstation), the latest edition of its business-oriented tool.

And the headline improvement this time is new sector-level incremental disk imaging, which, Paragon says, has boosted the efficiency of this backup type by 200%. Elsewhere, file-based backups can now be encrypted by a password. There’s the option to back up your data to an FTP/ SFTP server. Support for working with virtual disks has now been improved, and new asynchronous data transfer means backup performance has considerably improved. Add the improved hardware support, which ensures the program is equally at home with SSD, AFD, 2TB+, USB 3.0 and non-512B sector sized disks, and Paragon Drive Backup 11 seems to be a solid and reliable update. There’s not enough here to change anyone’s mind about the program, but if you’re already a Paragon fan you’ll appreciate the enhancements. Drive Backup has some strong competition in the professional backup market, though, not least from Genie Backup Manager Pro 9.0 ($69.95), also just released. The new build benefits from an even wider range of backup destinations. As well as saving to local, removable and network drives, then program can now also upload your archive to Amazon S3 accounts or Secure FTP servers. And while other new features aren’t so impressive (“Outlook 2010 support” is something we’d have expected long ago), there’s plenty to like here, including Windows 8 support, reduced memory requirements and all-round improved backup performance. All of which is packaged in an excellent and easy-to-use interface. Our pick? Maybe Paragon Drive Backup 11 for image-based backups, Genie Backup Manager Pro 9.0 for files, but it’s a tough call. If you’re looking for a professional backup tool then both are worthy of consideration.

Paragon UFSD 9.0 Embedded for Smart TV This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on Tue, July 10th, 2012

Secures recording on removable external storage media. Paragon Software Group (PSG) announces the Paragon UFSD 9.0 Embedded, a technology to ensure data security when removing external storage devices from Smart TVs.

Based on the performing Universal File System Driver (UFSD) technology, UFSD 9.0 Embedded guarantees fast, highest-quality playback and recording of HD video content to or from Smart TV devices of any platform. Users of embedded systems such as routers, media players, smartphones, tablets or NAS devices want to be free to disable removable media quickly and without having to take further actions - like clicking on the 'safely remove hardware' icon, while also ensuring that the data is safe. In embedded systems there are often no built-in 'safe removal' functions available. Paragon's solution to this problem is the 'Standby mode' option that allows users in a matter of seconds to disconnect the external storage device, at the same time guaranteeing data safety. In addition to safety, recording speeds are necessary for the ability to transfer HD-quality data to external storage media. To ensure the maximum recording speed, Linux Kernel utilizes 'deferred' or 'postponed' recording, writing and recording multiple changes in a single write operation to a disk or flash drive, which requires much more time than changing the data in RAM - therefore cached write operations sometimes require more than 30 seconds to get user data to the storage safely.

Cross-platform software developer Paragon Software Group (PSG) today announced that Buffalo Inc. selected Paragon Software's exFAT and NTFS for Android drivers for embedding into Buffalo's next generation of Smart Box product lines. Paragon's NTFS for Android driver allows consumers to attach their NTFS (Windows®) formatted USB Key or Hard Drive to the Smart Box and now with Paragon's exFAT for Android driver also included, consumers can get the full utility of the new high capacity exFAT-formatted SDXC cards in the Smart Box.

"Paragon has been a strong partner for Buffalo; their first-class OEM support as well as the superior performance and features of their technology are key reasons we have chosen PSG for our Smart Box project," said Kentaro Odaka, General Manager of Product Development Div. Buffalo Inc. "This expansion of our partnership provides the tools necessary for our customers to access and enjoy digital content on a variety of devices.“ Paragon's drivers offer superior management of file system integrity, fast mount speed, comprehensive data protection, powerful file system check and repair utilities, and strong journaling capabilities. Paragon's proprietary replay journal feature protects a consumer's data on a USB HDD or SDXC card when unsafely removed from a Smart Box, TV, or Monitor. Without this feature there is a high potential that the file system on their USB HDD or SDXC card could become unrecognizable to Windows and cause data loss. "We are very excited about extending our partnership with Buffalo to include our latest Universal File System Driver (UFSD) offerings -- including exFAT for Android," said Tom Fedro, president of Paragon Software Group. "This partnership will provide the very best experience for end users as they are now able to view, modify and save content regardless of the type of storage medium utilized.“ Paragon's driver technology enables any device on the network, from tablets to smartphones to servers, PCs and workstations, regardless of their operating system, to communicate and share files. For over 10 years now, Paragon UFSD technology has been providing operating systems and embedded kernels (Android, Linux, Windows, Mac, ThreadX, VxWorks, eCos, etc.) with access to file systems (exFAT, NTFS, HFS+, Ext, etc) that normally would not be fully supported. Beyond access, Paragon's UFSD technology provides the highest data throughput speeds possible -- equivalent to, or exceeding, native performance. This is especially important for flawless recording and playback of High-Definition, Blu-ray quality movies and videos.

by Jim K. Thomas According to a recently conducted survey of small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) by Aberdeen Research, 69 percent of the respondents are reported to have implemented virtualization technology into their server environments. As virtualization becomes a normal element of a

networked environment, more administrators are using virtual machines for instant recovery. The use of virtualized servers is increasing for several reasons; the most significant being budgetary. Virtual servers are a cost-effective alternative to purchasing new hardware. But exactly how does virtualization fit in with a disaster recovery plan? Virtualizing tier-1 applications amplifies the critical nature of building in quick recovery of virtual machines (VMs). With little tolerance for application downtime, businesses need assurance that their data will be quickly available in the event of hardware failure.

Interestingly enough, in a 2010 data protection survey performed by VMware, IT Administrators report backing up only 68 percent of their virtual environments. The biggest reasons given for this gap were costs of hardware, software and complexity of the process. There is software available in the marketplace that simplifies the backup process for virtual environments. By implementing image-based backup software for servers, backups can be scheduled for different configurations: physical-to-virtual (P2V), V2V and V2P, and P2P. By scheduling operations to be performed on a regular basis, your data is protected at all times. The benefit is that you can restore a server instantly to a VM and there is no need for fail-over hardware to sit idle gathering dust.

For instant recovery, all an administrator has to do is import the new VM into the virtual environment and then power on the machine. If it's a scheduled process, such as when you're updating and overwriting the virtual disk file, the configuration is pre-existing (you're just updating the data), no import is needed. Just boot up the virtual machine in this situation.

According to Thomas Coughlin, founder of Coughlin and Associates, “By enabling physical-to-virtual migration and virtual system recovery, customers should experience faster recovery times and if managed properly, greater overall system reliability. This capability increases the total return and leverages the efficiency of a virtual environment to make a more resilient and self-healing system environment.” Virtualization is becoming the standard rather than the exception when implementing or upgrading an existing disaster recovery strategy, saving hours of recovery time and significant storage space.

If you’re looking for the ability to recover servers instantly, look for backup software that offers the following: • Sector-level hard disk and partition copy; • Support for top-tier virtualization platforms: VMware, MS Hyper-V, Oracle VirtualBox, etc.; • Migration support to dissimilar hardware; and • Scheduling for convenient “set and forget” operation.

Use-Case Example A Christian-based non-profit organization with 550 employees had limited finances to invest in disaster recovery software. When they consulted with their IT reseller, he could offer nothing within their price range that met their needs, so the organization decided to conduct a search for affordable backup and restore software on their own. They came across Paragon Software Group’s Drive Backup Server and Virtual Editions. To boost servers and workstation performance Paragon Software Group (PSG), announced that Games Workshop LLC, the designer and manufacturer of fantasy miniatures, choses Paragon Alignment Tool (PAT) to boost server and workstation performance due to misaligned partitions.

Games Workshop employs both a modern VMware virtual server environment running Windows 2008 Datacenter and a legacy physical server environment running older Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 OS. "We had a number of older servers that we migrated into our virtual environment and noticed that we did not get the performance that we expected." said Jon Howell, North America IT director for Games Workshop. "A little research revealed that since they were older OS versions, the partitions were not aligned correctly. The Paragon alignment tool cleaned things up nicely and increased the performance." In the recently IHS iSuppli report Hard Disk Drive Pricing: Will it Reach Pre-Flood Level in the Near Future?, prices for HDD are expected to remain above pre-flood levels through 2014. This partition alignment tool is made for extending the life of hardware still utilizing older OSs; it also increase server performance for little investment in time or dollars.

53% Secure Data on Local Server Storage, 51% on NAS, 39% on Tape, 30% on Cloud This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on Fri, November 23rd, 2012

2012 Press Coverage

Survey by Paragon Software Backup and DR software developer Paragon Software Group(PSG) conducted a survey among 377 IT professionals from August 29 - September 7, 2012. The results show that of those surveyed, utilizing local server storage was the most popular method (52.6%) for securing critical data in the IT environment, followed closely by NAS (51.2%); with only about a 30% adoption rate of cloud services. Tape still maintains a footprint with a use of 38.8%. (Note: In some cases, multiple storage methods are employed within the same IT environment thus resulting in a totaling of storage methods greater than 100%.) Paragon's numbers regarding the use of cloud services align with InformationWeek's annual cloud survey (Dell, HP Create Clouds for the 'Rest of Us', April 23, 2012, by Art Wittmann), which indicates that the adoption rate of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), a key element of cloud storage, may have reached its peak and is now trending to slower growth. Further, the survey results show that, of those surveyed, cloud services were not implemented in several industries including healthcare and aerospace/aeronautics. Also of note, the finance industry's unique mix of very short system-recovery and long data-retention requirements makes it the market segment with the highest integration of cloud services (36.8%) in the storage environment. Finance is also the highest integrator of tape into the storage mix, 68.4% of those surveyed. The logistics (66.7%) and government (56.0%) industries were the second and third highest users of tape backup by industry. Percentage of Local Server, Cloud, and Tape Use in Storage Environment by Industry:

2012 Press Coverage

Paragon Software Group, a well known Data Backup and Disaster Recovery solution provider, recently conducted a survey on data storage. The survey was conducted in between August- September 2012 and included 377 IT professionals representing various enterprises from different parts of the world. The results of survey revealed that over 53% of organizations preferred to store their most critical data on local servers. From among those professionals, a large proportion of respondents agreed that, they were using NAS services to keep their data readily available. As a part of business continuity planning, most of the enterprises also had IP SAN or iSCSI san solutions in place, to achieve high availability, performance and attain data continuity on time. The survey numbers revealed that the tape storage solution was still alive and was much preferred for archival storage. Moreover, almost 43% of respondents agreed that Tape was much preferred solution for storing archived data, as it was cost effective and was within their budget. Paragon Software survey also revealed the fact that, almost 30% of the enterprise data was fed to the cloud. The survey also included the results forwarded by InformationWeek’s annual cloud survey and came to a conclusion that the adoption rate of Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), which is a key element of cloud storage, has reached a saturation point and is now showing slower growth from the past 16 months.

Continued… Paragon’s numbers suggest that the finance sector, which needs very short term disaster recovery and long data retention requirements, was the leading sector to embrace cloud services. The finance sector also happens to be the highest integrator of tape, which it uses as an archival solution. The logistics sector was the next behind finance to use tape solutions on a high note and it was immediately followed by government industries. The results also revealed a fact that, cloud based services, which includes storage, is being ignored by industries such as healthcare and aeronautics. Going by the percentage of data storage solutions used by different industries, the results are as follows Aeronautics industry has stored 60% of data on their servers and has moved the remaining 40% of data to tape. In a similar fashion, Education sector stored its 50% of data on local servers, 30% on tape and the remaining 20% was moved to the cloud. Finance sector retained almost 45% of data on its server, while 35% of data was moved to tape. Remaining 20% was moved to the cloud. Coming to the healthcare sector, it retained 50% of its data on local servers and 50% was retained on tape medium. Government organizations moved 20% of data to the cloud and 30% of their data was on tape. Remaining percentage, which happens to be critical data, was stored on local servers. Insurance, logistics, manufacturing sectors maintained 40% of data on local servers and 50% were moved to archival solutions. Remaining 10% was retained on cloud. Coming to Real estate, retail telecommunications and transportation almost most of the data was maintained on local servers and a small proportion was distributed on to tape & Cloud. Boise State University’s TRiO Educational Talent Search and TRiO Upward Bound Programs selected Paragon’s Hard Disk Manager (HDM) to save time and resources to deploy and/or reimage desktop systems. HDM is a complete solution for image-based backup and disaster recovery. An available Virtual Server add-on component enables technicians to back up virtual servers and leverage an existing virtual environment for instant server recovery. The departments reimaging process without software assistance took three to four hours for each machine. With IT resource time valuable, Corey Simpson, IT coordinator for Boise State University’s ETS and Upward Bound program, conducted research on a variety of reimaging software solutions then scheduled a demonstration of Paragon’s HDM. “We needed to decrease the amount of time we were spending on reimaging machines. One of the features I looked for in a solution was the ability to process multiple restores on the network — Paragon was the only vendor offering the features I needed as well as disk partition and other disk management tools. HDM is a time saver that comes with useful tools for added flexibility. It also gives me the ability to backup a hard drive before reimaging, providing peace of mind that if it fails I can restore the drive to its original state.” With HDM, the process now requires 30 to 40 minutes. “Paragon HDM is a great alternative to Symantec Ghost or Backup Exec or Acronis True Image,” explains Daniel Eickhoff, director of channel sales at Paragon. “In fact, 75 percent or our new customers are switching to Paragon from Symantec or Acronis. Customers choose Paragon because of our innovative technology, cost-effective licensing and outstanding US-based technical support.” Boise State University’s TRiO Educational Talent Search (ETS) and Upward Bound programs provide outreach and assistance to first-generation college bound and low-income students. Boise State University’s TRiO Educational Talent Search and Upward Bound Program Reduces Reimaging Process from 3 – 4 Hours per Machine to Well Under One Hour with Paragon Hard Disk Manager

“We needed to decrease the amount of time we were spending on reimaging machines,” said Simpson. “One of the features I looked for in a solution was the ability to process multiple restores on the network — Paragon was the only vendor offering the features I needed as well as disk partition and other disk management tools.” —Corey Simpson, IT Systems Coordinator

Boise State University TRiO Educational Talent Search and Upward Bound Program

Boise State University’s TRiO Educational Talent Search (ETS) and TRiO Upward Bound programs provide outreach and assistance to first-generation college bound and low-income students encouraging them on a path to higher education. The program maintains ten to twelve off-site classrooms. One classroom may have three to five computers, requiring occasional reimaging.

After conducting an Internet search (reviewing product reviews and feature comparison charts) and narrowing the field of competitors, Corey Simpson, IT coordinator for Boise State University’s ETS and Upward Bound program, scheduled a demonstration of Paragon Software’s Hard Disk Manager Technician License (HDMTL), for advanced imaging and disaster recovery.

“We needed to decrease the amount of time we were spending on reimaging machines,” said Simpson. “One of the features I looked for in a solution was the ability to process multiple restores on the network — Paragon was the only vendor offering the features I needed as well as disk partition and other disk management tools.”

Before purchasing Paragon’s HDMTL, the reimaging process took about three to four hours per system — essentially each machine requiring a rebuild for each machine. With Paragon it now takes around 30 to 40 minutes per machine.

“Hard Disk Manager is a time saver and comes with a multitude of useful tools for added flexibility,” continued Simpson. “Additionally, the software gives me the ability to backup a hard drive before reimaging it, providing a freedom of conscience that if it fails I can restore the drive to its original state.”

HDM Tech License is based on Hard Disk Manager Server Edition

Hard Disk Manager Server is a complete software package for image-based backup and disaster recovery and disk management and optimization. An available Virtual Server add-on component enables technicians to backup virtual servers and leverage an existing virtual environment for instant server recovery. Other key features include: bare-metal restore to dissimilar hardware, instant server recovery, incremental and differential backups, live server migrations and virtualizations, scheduling and retention wizards, scripting engine, and advanced disk wiping algorithms (DoD certified). While HDM Server is licensed per server, the Technician License is license per user and is available as a 1, 2, or 3-year subscription.

Centon Electronics Bundles Paragon Migrate OS to SSD Software in SSD Notebook Kits; Ensures Reliable System Transfer

“I had worked with Paragon in the past, asked for a copy to test, and it worked perfectly. It was simple, quick and accurate. Exactly the solution we were searching for.”

— Aaron Campbell, Product Marketing Manager Centon Electronics

Founded in 1978, Centon Electronics, Inc. is a privately owned corporation based in Aliso Viejo, California. Centon offers a full line of DRAM, flash memory, USB drives, and SSD Drives for consumer’s digital needs.

Product marketing manager, Aaron Campbell, needed reliable migration software to bundle with their SSD Notebook kits for easy transfer of the operating system, critical applications and files. "After testing another party’s software with our SSDs, we decided to look for a more intuitive software solution. I had worked with Paragon in the past, asked for a copy [of Paragon’s Migrate OS to SSD] to test, and it worked perfectly. It was simple, quick and accurate. Exactly the solution we were searching for.”

The task of migrating a software environment (the operating system, applications and files) to another storage device can be a slow and painful process. Paragon Migrate OS to SSD 2.0 simplifies the migration process by providing an intuitive wizard-driven interface. Paragon Migrate OS to SSD automatically downsizes the source system volume, if needed; auto-aligns the copied system partition; and provides intelligent selection of specific files and folders for migration — all without rebooting the system.

“Paragon was very responsive and more than willing to work with us even though we were not a large corporation,” continued Campbell. “The customer and technical support was excellent and made us feel we were just as important as an international firm.”

Paragon Migrate OS to SSD Software

Key features and benefits of Paragon Migrate OS to SSD include upgraded file exclusion technology to increase migration speed, simple and convenient wizard-driven graphical interface, automatic partition resize capability (to prevent common issues when migrating system data from an HDD to a smaller SSD), automatic partition alignment awareness (to prevent redundant read/write operations), Microsoft Reserved Partition awareness, file exclusion/selection capability, hot copy without requiring a system restart, and a smooth migration process regardless of the operating system.

The Fire Police Pension Association of Colorado Chooses Paragon

Software Hard Disk Manager for Reliable, Quick Image-based

Disaster Recovery Software

“We use Paragon Software’s HDM image-based software primarily for disaster recovery. If we lose a workstation, we can have a replacement up and running in 30 minutes; a server within an hour; whereas it may take up to 10 hours otherwise to rebuild a server.”

—Jeff Anderson, Network Engineer, Fire Police Pension Assoc. of CO

The Challenge and Search for the Perfect Solution

The Fire and Police Pension Association of Colorado (FPPA) administers a statewide

multiple-employer public-employee retirement system that provides defined benefit plan

coverage as well as death and disability coverage for police officers and firefighters

throughout the State of Colorado.

Looking for affordable, reliable and quick disaster recovery software, FPPA evaluated

three primary image-based products. One was too expensive and the other required

installation of client software on all the PCs, lacked an intuitive interface, and

encountered issues when faced with restoring to dissimilar hardware. Paragon Software’s

Hard Disk Manager (HDM) offered the best image-based disaster recovery software to

meet their needs.

“Should disaster strike, we needed a flexible and affordable disaster recovery solution

that could get us up and running within an hour,” said Jeff Anderson, network engineer

for FPPA. “With Paragon’s HDM, we can reimage a workstation within 30 minutes —

quick and simple.”

The Bottom Line

“HDM is rock solid in ease of use with flawless workstation/server P2P restore, regardless

of the platform,” continued Anderson.

Backup & Disaster Recovery Software Feature Highlights

Paragon’s backup and disaster recovery solutions offer comprehensive features including

sector and file-based backup, differential and incremental backups, bare-metal restore to

dissimilar hardware and virtual machines, and a wizard driven backup scheduler for

convenient “set and forget”-type operation. It also allows for backups into a hidden, local

partition for self-contained system restore with only a couple of key strokes.

“Right after purchasing the software, I backed up an important RAID 5 Server. One week later it crashed completely. Drive Backup restored the entire server in 25 minutes, saving critical data and a huge amount of work. Now I can sleep at night since I have already used Drive Backup under the worst possible scenario, and Paragon came through with flying colors.”

—Jeff Shaver, Director Information Systems, North Coast Life

Background

North Coast Life’s web site is vital to the company’s $600 Million life insurance business. The site controls all transactions, lead generation, recruiting and inventory. Further, the site integrates with the company’s ERP system that manages orders, deliveries, etc. “The service license on Symantec Backup Exec was up for renewal,” said Jeff Shaver, director of information services for North Coast Life. “After using their software for nearly 10 years, it was time to look for a better solution.” The accessibility of the company’s point of sale system and the ability to recover data and entire systems reliably and quickly in case of disaster, was absolutely critical. Other important requirements on their IT disaster recovery checklist included strong scripting capabilities to automate scheduled disk maintenance operations and virtualization and migration functionality.

The Evaluation Process

“I reviewed three other competing products before deciding on Paragon,” continued Shaver, “Symantec Backup Exec, Barracuda Backup, and NovaStor Backup.” The evaluation of Symantec’s upgraded Backup Exec software revealed a cumbersome new interface that came with lengthy user manuals and a long learning curve. The renewal also came with a price tag that was out of reach for the SMB.

Continued…

Paragon Drive Backup Server’s intuitive interface was up and running in minutes with virtually no time wasted pouring through manuals. “Paragon was easy to use,” said Shaver. “It restored machines just as promised. I took four different workstations and two different servers and restored them to different hardware and each one came back as advertised. Great customer support was a major factor in our decision as well. Every time I called with a question, a support engineer was willing and ready to help (I was lucky if the sales rep from another company would call me back for pre-purchase questions).”

After an in-depth testing phase and comparison North Coast Life decided to replace their existing backup software with Paragon’s Drive Backup Server, which combines highly innovative features for backup, disaster recovery, virtualization and migration — all in one product. Results

“One month after purchasing Paragon's Drive Backup Server, one of our main web servers running RAID 5 lost a drive and refused to allow a new drive to be introduced into the RAID. Paragon to the rescue! It only took 25 minutes and our web server running Windows 2003 Server was back up and running.” Priced at 40 percent under Symantec’s renewal cost and bundled with better features, including Windows support, securing data is now a stress-free operation for North Coast Life. Reliable, cost-effective backup and disaster recovery software

The Challenge and Search for the Perfect Solution

Located in the hurricane belt, one southern state’s governor’s office knew the importance of being prepared in case of a disaster. When the director of technical services started his new position, one of the first tasks on his agenda was to replace the aging tape backup system with a more reliable, and cost-effective, image-based backup software solution, backing up to a NAS. Soon after receiving the new storage device, the director tested Paragon Software’s Hard Disk Manager backup software for servers. Within weeks of having the new backup system in place, they faced their first test of the software. After the SCSI RAID controller and backplane on one of their servers went out on a Sunday, they switched over to a SATA controller. Because they had their image backup securely in place, before lunch time on Monday they were safely restored.
