From PC to Mac: my opinion, 10-months later

Summary: 10 months ago, I bought a Mac after 15 years of Windows usage! Did I “switch” permanently, sell the Mac, or something else altogether? The answer awaits herein… Last year, I decided to take the plunge into the world of OS X (as well as iOS, for that matter). It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 months already, but I figure it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty with an update. I love how passionate users are about their operating systems, but for all of you OS X users who hoped to see me “switch” after ~3-4 months, I’m sorry to say that I still prefer Windows 7; HOWEVER, don’t go lambasting me in the comments just yet! The reason I haven’t “switched” has everything to do with why I bought a Mac in the first place: to learn a new skill set.

Now, 10 months later, here are the things I use my MacBook Air for: iOS development: As I recently wrote about, I’ve decided to learn mobile development — specifically, iOS. At the moment, my MacBook Air is the tool for this job. This isn’t a decision I saw coming when I purchased the device, but when I did make it, I already had the right tool for the job. Writing: Most of my writing is done on my MacBook Air. It took me a while to get used to its keyboard layout and all of the multi-key shortcuts needed to perform tasks that only require one key on a PC (such as the delete key), but, overall, I quite enjoy writing on it — which is good, considering how much I write. Traveling: Prior to my MacBook Air, I took my Alienware m11x with me everywhere I went — primarily, due to its gaming power. Now, when I travel, I rarely engage in PC gaming, so handing over the travel duties to my MacBook Air is a no-brainer. It’s lightweight, compact, and plays home to the two most important facets of my work-related life: writing and mobile development. Ladies: I enjoy walking around with it to impress the ladies. Though I’ve long-since adapted to most of the differences between OS X and Windows, it was incredibly frustrating initially — so much so, that I even considered returning my Mac. But, I persevered, and now, a long-time Windows-user friend of mine is going through many of the same tribulations. As such, I was reminded of the very first application I purchased for my Mac: Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X. Basically, this little wonder allows you to read/write/modify NTFS partitions (the file system used by Windows in NT, 2000, XP, Vista, and 7). That means you’ll be able to freely move data between Windows and OS X. As a word of caution, I should also note that I’ve seen a number of complaints from people attempting to use Paragon’s software; however, my experiences have been 100% painless using it on OS X Lion, but your mileage may vary.

Anyway, I still use PC for gaming, research, browsing, video editing, and far more. There are just too many applications I use for those purposes that are PC-only. The right tool for the job; that’s what I’m an advocate of. Why focus on completely “switching” if you don’t feel it’s necessary to do as such? I was open to the possibility, but I had a feeling the end result would be just as it is: me, a PC user and a Mac user. (And for what it’s worth, my phone is an Android-powered device.) All-in-all, the venture was well-worth the price — but that’s taking largely into consideration the fact that I’ve recently gotten into iOS development. If you’re looking to “switch” completely, I think it would be worth the price, but again, there are many ways I use Windows that I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to on any other OS, so be sure to take that into consideration before you take the leap. Is anyone else out there a fan of simply using what works for them, and not just what works within what a particular brand has to offer? Summary: Backup disgusts me. It is the white flag of defeat in a never-ending battle to preserve our stuff against storage devices that don’t store reliably. And it’s boring. A few weeks ago was World Backup Day, a worthy attempt to get people to backup and to check their restores. But I couldn’t get excited about it. Which led me to think about why? After all, I backup daily. I encourage my friends to backup and help them set up good backup strategies. Then I saw this press release from Paragon Software, a maker of storage management and data protection software, from a survey of their Hard Disk Manager customers. Remember, these are people who bought the software, which means they are far savvier than most users. The headline: A Significant Number of Home PC Users Don’t Practice Effective Personal Data Safety Measures. My favorite: 15% of Paragon’s customers who do backup - not all do - backup to the same disk drive that has their data.

My head hurts. Where to start? But I don’t blame consumers for not understanding backup. I blame storage companies for building devices that can’t preserve our data. Virtually all storage devices and systems should come with a bright orange sticker that says “Data loss guaranteed if you don’t backup!” Yes, that’s a buzz killer. But it needs to be - until someone perfects highly reliable storage. The Storage Bits take There are storage systems that don’t require backup - one of which survived Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. They rely on data replication and geographic separation. But for the mobile device world - where your data is one theft away from loss - the goal has to be to make backup automatic and invisible. You get your new device, connect to the web and your data starts repopulating your device. Or get rid of local storage entirely. But can you trust the cloud? This isn’t an easy problem or it would have been already solved. But we need storage that is as reliable as a book. When was the last time you backed up a book? Inventors, the world is waiting. Comments welcome, of course. I quadruple copy critical data, both locally and into the cloud.

Paragon Hard Disk Manager 12 Professional is as comprehensive a toolset for hard drives as you'll find. It has full backup, imaging, and partitioning capabilities, and it also supports virtualisation software such as VirtualBox and VMware by allowing you to create virtual machines for those programs. HDM hasn't changed a whole lot since the last version; it was already so comprehensive, however, that Paragon simply didn't have that much to add. The short list of partition functions includes creating, moving, formatting, deleting, backing up, burning to CD, converting the file system, and wiping. One feature that is missing from HDM 12 is the ability to mount an image as a virtual hard drive that you can peruse in Windows Explorer. R-Drive Image and True Image do this, and I've found it to be a handy way to quickly pull a file or two out of a backup. HDM 12 lets you connect to an image to perform partition and other operations on it, but doesn't mount it.

Backup, virtual machines, partitioning, conversion--Hard Drive Manager 12 Professional is a powerful toolkit. At $100, it is a bit pricey for the average user, so be sure to check out the aforementioned $50 suite version to see if that will cover your needs. Support for working with virtual disks has now been improved, and new asynchronous data transfer means backup performance has considerably improved. Add the improved hardware support, which ensures the program is equally at home with SSD, AFD, 2TB+, USB 3.0 and non-512B sector sized disks, and Paragon Drive Backup 11 seems to be a solid and reliable update. There’s not enough here to change anyone’s mind about the program, but if you’re already a Paragon fan you’ll appreciate the enhancements. Drive Backup has some strong competition in the professional backup market, though, not least from Genie Backup Manager Pro 9.0 ($69.95), also just released. The new build benefits from an even wider range of backup destinations. As well as saving to local, removable and network drives, then program can now also upload your archive to Amazon S3 accounts or Secure FTP servers. And while other new features aren’t so impressive (“Outlook 2010 support” is something we’d have expected long ago), there’s plenty to like here, including Windows 8 support, reduced memory requirements and all-round improved backup performance. All of which is packaged in an excellent and easy-to-use interface. Our pick? Maybe Paragon Drive Backup 11 for image-based backups, Genie Backup Manager Pro 9.0 for files, but it’s a tough call. If you’re looking for a professional backup tool then both are worthy of consideration.

by Jim K. Thomas According to a recently conducted survey of small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) by Aberdeen Research, 69 percent of the respondents are reported to have implemented virtualization technology into their server environments. As virtualization becomes a normal element of a

networked environment, more administrators are using virtual machines for instant recovery. The use of virtualized servers is increasing for several reasons; the most significant being budgetary. Virtual servers are a cost-effective alternative to purchasing new hardware. But exactly how does virtualization fit in with a disaster recovery plan? Virtualizing tier-1 applications amplifies the critical nature of building in quick recovery of virtual machines (VMs). With little tolerance for application downtime, businesses need assurance that their data will be quickly available in the event of hardware failure.

Interestingly enough, in a 2010 data protection survey performed by VMware, IT Administrators report backing up only 68 percent of their virtual environments. The biggest reasons given for this gap were costs of hardware, software and complexity of the process. There is software available in the marketplace that simplifies the backup process for virtual environments. By implementing image-based backup software for servers, backups can be scheduled for different configurations: physical-to-virtual (P2V), V2V and V2P, and P2P. By scheduling operations to be performed on a regular basis, your data is protected at all times. The benefit is that you can restore a server instantly to a VM and there is no need for fail-over hardware to sit idle gathering dust.

For instant recovery, all an administrator has to do is import the new VM into the virtual environment and then power on the machine. If it's a scheduled process, such as when you're updating and overwriting the virtual disk file, the configuration is pre-existing (you're just updating the data), no import is needed. Just boot up the virtual machine in this situation.

To boost servers and workstation performance Paragon Software Group (PSG), announced that Games Workshop LLC, the designer and manufacturer of fantasy miniatures, choses Paragon Alignment Tool (PAT) to boost server and workstation performance due to misaligned partitions.

Games Workshop employs both a modern VMware virtual server environment running Windows 2008 Datacenter and a legacy physical server environment running older Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 OS. "We had a number of older servers that we migrated into our virtual environment and noticed that we did not get the performance that we expected." said Jon Howell, North America IT director for Games Workshop. Irvine-based backup and disaster recovery software developer Paragon Software is extending itself into the service market, saying this week that it has launched a new Business Recovery and Continuity (BRC) Planning service. The firm said its extension into services is aimed at helping to design a comprehensive, best practice BC/DR plan for companies following disasters, such as recent super storm Sandy. Survey by Paragon Software Backup and DR software developer Paragon Software Group(PSG) conducted a survey among 377 IT professionals from August 29 - September 7, 2012. The results show that of those surveyed, utilizing local server storage was the most popular method (52.6%) for securing critical data in the IT environment, followed closely by NAS (51.2%); with only about a 30% adoption rate of cloud services. Tape still maintains a footprint with a use of 38.8%. (Note: In some cases, multiple storage methods are employed within the same IT environment thus resulting in a totaling of storage methods greater than 100%.) Paragon's numbers regarding the use of cloud services align with InformationWeek's annual cloud survey (Dell, HP Create Clouds for the 'Rest of Us', April 23, 2012, by Art Wittmann), which indicates that the adoption rate of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), a key element of cloud storage, may have reached its peak and is now trending to slower growth. Further, the survey results show that, of those surveyed, cloud services were not implemented in several industries including healthcare and aerospace/aeronautics. Also of note, the finance industry's unique mix of very short system-recovery and long data-retention requirements makes it the market segment with the highest integration of cloud services (36.8%) in the storage environment. Finance is also the highest integrator of tape into the storage mix, 68.4% of those surveyed. The logistics (66.7%) and government (56.0%) industries were the second and third highest users of tape backup by industry. Paragon Software Group, a well known Data Backup and Disaster Recovery solution provider, recently conducted a survey on data storage. The survey was conducted in between August- September 2012 and included 377 IT professionals representing various enterprises from different parts of the world. The results of survey revealed that over 53% of organizations preferred to store their most critical data on local servers. From among those professionals, a large proportion of respondents agreed that, they were using NAS services to keep their data readily available. As a part of business continuity planning, most of the enterprises also had IP SAN or iSCSI san solutions in place, to achieve high availability, performance and attain data continuity on time. The survey numbers revealed that the tape storage solution was still alive and was much preferred for archival storage. Moreover, almost 43% of respondents agreed that Tape was much preferred solution for storing archived data, as it was cost effective and was within their budget. Paragon Software survey also revealed the fact that, almost 30% of the enterprise data was fed to the cloud. The survey also included the results forwarded by InformationWeek’s annual cloud survey and came to a conclusion that the adoption rate of Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), which is a key element of cloud storage, has reached a saturation point and is now showing slower growth from the past 16 months.

Continued… Paragon’s numbers suggest that the finance sector, which needs very short term disaster recovery and long data retention requirements, was the leading sector to embrace cloud services. The finance sector also happens to be the highest integrator of tape, which it uses as an archival solution. The logistics sector was the next behind finance to use tape solutions on a high note and it was immediately followed by government industries. The results also revealed a fact that, cloud based services, which includes storage, is being ignored by industries such as healthcare and aeronautics. Going by the percentage of data storage solutions used by different industries, the results are as follows Aeronautics industry has stored 60% of data on their servers and has moved the remaining 40% of data to tape. In a similar fashion, Education sector stored its 50% of data on local servers, 30% on tape and the remaining 20% was moved to the cloud. Finance sector retained almost 45% of data on its server, while 35% of data was moved to tape. Remaining 20% was moved to the cloud. Coming to the healthcare sector, it retained 50% of its data on local servers and 50% was retained on tape medium. Government organizations moved 20% of data to the cloud and 30% of their data was on tape. Remaining percentage, which happens to be critical data, was stored on local servers. Insurance, logistics, manufacturing sectors maintained 40% of data on local servers and 50% were moved to archival solutions. Remaining 10% was retained on cloud. Coming to Real estate, retail telecommunications and transportation almost most of the data was maintained on local servers and a small proportion was distributed on to tape & Cloud. Located in the hurricane belt, one southern state’s governor’s office knew the importance of being prepared in case of a disaster. When the director of technical services started his new position, one of the first tasks on his agenda was to replace the aging tape backup system with a more reliable, and cost-effective, image-based backup software solution, backing up to a NAS.
