CHIEF MEDICAL EXAMINER

The Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office, a NAME-accredited office in Syracuse, New York, is the regional medical examiner’s office for Central New York. The office is located in the Center for Forensic Sciences, a fully integrated state-of-the-art forensic facility that also houses the county’s forensic laboratories.

Our office has funding for a chief medical examiner and 3 forensic pathologist/medical examiner positions. The successful candidate will join a dedicated staff including: a director of operations, 9 forensic investigators with ABMDI credentials, 5 assistant forensic investigators, 5 autopsy technicians, 2 morgue attendants, and other administrative personnel.

The office has an in-house ABFT-accredited toxicology lab and access to forensic anthropology, forensic odontology services as well as clinical, pathology, and neuropathology specialties through the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University.

JOB DUTIESResponsibility for the oversight of the Medical Examiner’s Office in the capacity of Chief Medical Examiner. General supervision is exercised over a number of technical, professional and paraprofessional employees in the Medical Examiner’s Office. The position includes an academic appointment with SUNY Upstate Medical University, Department of Pathology for the training of pathology residents in autopsy and forensic pathology.

POSITION AVAILABLECHIEF MEDICAL EXAMINER

QUALIFICATIONSMD or DO degree with American Board of Pathology certification in anatomic pathology and forensic pathology and five (5) years of experience, or part-time equivalent, in a Medical Examiner or similar office. Current or ability to obtain a license to practice medicine in the State of New York.

SALARY AND BENEFITSThe salary range for the position is $186,000 to $202,000, depending on qualifications and experience, with scheduled annual increases, additional lucrative teaching stipend, and a competitive benefits package:
