              02/10/2012 – Version 1  UNOSAT Activation: FL20120917PAK

Situation Update 1: Satellite assessment of floods over the city of Jacobabad, Sindh Province, Pakistan  PREFACE: This report provides an overview of current flooding of the city of Jacobabad in the Sindh Province of Pakistan. Satellite imagery acquired on the 28th September 2012 was used for this report. This report is part of an on-going satellite monitoring program of UNITAR / UNOSAT of the International Charter on Space and Major Disasters activation over floods in Pakistan in support of international humanitarian assistance and created to respond to the needs of UN agencies and their partners. This situational analysis is based on a rapid visual assessment of current satellite data available over this area. This analysis has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR/UNOSAT at the contact information below. ANALYSIS SUMMARY:

This map presents an overview on the current flood water status for the cities of Jacobabad city, Sindh Province based on GeoEye-1 imagery from the 28th September 2012. There appears to have been minimal change in the extent of the flooding since the UNOSAT Flood Assessment Report based on SPOT imagery acquired on 20th September: (http://www.unitar.org/unosat/node/44/1677). As of 28th September 2012, flood waters continue to surround the city of Jacobabad, particularly to the north where route N-65 and the railway remain cut off by flood waters and several small communities have been completely inundated (Site 1). Large areas of agricultural land are inundated, particularly to the north and west of the city where ponds appear to be overflowing (Site 4). Neighbourhoods on the outskirts of Jacobabad remain inundated (Sites 2 and 3) and a large part of the Shahbaz Airbase is inundated, notably the northern end of the runways (Site 2).The airbase however still appears to be functioning1. The prison south of the city appears to have been affected by flood waters (Site 3).
