W E L C O M E F R O M T H E O F F I C E O F T H E D I R E C T O R S

Here we are at Paper Mill Playhouse for the exciting world premiere of Unmasked: The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, celebrating the most prolific Broadway

composer of our day. We are honored to collaborate with such a superstar and to have you join us. Paper Mill favorite JoAnn M. Hunter (fresh from our Cinderella—it’s as if we never said goodbye) has helmed this elegant production as both director and choreographer, working with Mr. Lloyd Webber himself and the accomplished comedy writer Richard Curtis. We also welcome primo music director Sam Davis, the best technicolor designers in the business, and a high-flying cast—wait till you hear them sing the music of the night.

Our Board of Trustees welcomed two new members earlier this season, Ian Mount of Short Hills and Greg Perruzzi of Montclair. We look forward to working with them and drawing on the

passion and expertise they bring to our organization. The board is busy preparing for our highly anticipated annual fundraising gala on Friday, May 15, chaired by trustee Larry Goren and his wife, Susan. This year we are incredibly pleased to honor our valued partner Merck and Don Watson, Vice President Global Workplace and Enterprise Services, with the Byrne/Kean Arts Advocate Award. In addition, our very own dedicated board member Audrey Bartner will receive the esteemed Antoinette Scudder Patron of the Arts Award. Additional gala honorees and entertainers will be announced shortly (see page 23 for more details).

Won’t you please consider becoming a Member of Paper Mill Playhouse with a tax-deductible contribution of $100 or more? As you may know, we are a mission-driven, not-for-profit organization, but our box office income pays for only half of the total operating budget, which includes much, much more than the first-class productions you see on our stage. Paper Mill’s wide-ranging educational and outreach activities impact tens of thousands of young people’s lives each year, introducing them to the joy of live theater, opening their hearts and minds, while ensuring the future of the art form. We simply cannot accomplish these great efforts toward inclusion without the generosity of our donors—no gift is too small or too large. In recognition of your support, Members receive special discounts, invitations to behind-the-scenes events, and other exclusive benefits. We also invite you to include Paper Mill in your estate planning and join our Ovation Society. Please visit PaperMill.org/support-us.

Watch your inbox for our upcoming announcement of the 2020–2021 season. It’s shaping up to be a very exciting slate of titles, and we can’t wait to share the news in March. As well, be sure to book your tickets soon for our next smash hit, the divinely hysterical Sister Act, and our season closer, the world premiere of The Wanderer, based on the life and music of Dion. You really don’t want to miss them.

We are grateful to JPMorgan Chase & Co. for sponsoring Unmasked, our Season Sponsor, Investors Bank, and our Education and Outreach Sponsor, The Goren Family and The Harmony Helper App.

Go, go, go, enjoy the show!

D I R E C T O R ’ S N O T E

While reading Andrew Lloyd Webber’s autobiography, Unmasked, I was so tickled by his sense of humor, his dry wit, and his uncanny and remarkable knowledge of musical

theater as well as many other subjects.

I have had the pleasure and honor to work with Andrew on two other projects prior to Unmasked here at Paper Mill, and I am about to embark on a fourth collaboration with this extraordinarily talented human being. One of the things that truly excites me about Unmasked is that the audience will discover Andrew’s inspirations, fears, and joys, and you will see firsthand his love of this genre.

Working with a creator is one thing, but to get an inside peek into their psyche, into how things happen or what inspired them, is sort of like being invited to a private party where no one else has gone. As audience members, you typically only see the finished product of a musical—Evita, for example—which is a wonderful thing. But to get a glimpse into the making of, the trials of, the oops moments before the final piece is presented—how “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” came about, for example—that is a privilege that few have the opportunity to experience.

I feel very lucky to know Andrew, to work with him and to now have some understanding on why and how he does what he does. Not that I could ever do what he does—oh, heavens, no! But to me, it’s truly inspiring to know that his journey is infinite, that ideas beget other ideas. That is art; that is life.

—JoAnn M. Hunter

A beloved New Jersey arts institution since 1938 and a nationally renowned not-for-profit regional theater, Paper Mill has been consistently recognized for the high-quality artistry of its reimagined classic musicals as well as its commitment to supporting the development of new works and the careers of Broadway’s best talent and emerging artists both onstage and behind the scenes. Paper Mill Playhouse boasts award-winning access services and outreach initiatives as well as performer training programs that impact nearly 40,000 students each year. Paper Mill Playhouse productions have launched national tours and gone on to Broadway—including Disney’s Newsies, Les Misérables, Honeymoon in Vegas, A Bronx Tale, Bandstand, Little House on the Prairie, and The Bodyguard—as well as television broadcasts on Showtime and PBS and original cast recordings. Paper Mill Playhouse is a member of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre, the Council of Stock Theatres, and the New Jersey Theatre Alliance. For more information, please visit PaperMill.org.
