Ontario, Canada’s Chemical Industry: INNOVATION — FROM PIPELINE TO THE BOTTOM LINE

The global investment focus for chemical and biochemical manufacturing is returning to North America. Companies can leverage Ontario’s advantages, capabilities and supportive business environment to cut capital costs and optimize long-term success. Seven of the 10 largest chemical companies in the world have located manufacturing operations in Ontario, home to Canada’s largest chemical cluster.

More for your money Our combined federal-provincial manufacturing income tax rate is 11 percentage points below the U.S. average. Labour costs in Ontario are among the lowest in the G7 countries, and our generous R&D tax credits apply to a broader range of eligible costs than in the U.S. and many other countries.

Extensive infrastructure and supply chain

Ontario is home to Canada’s largest chemical manufacturing cluster and is at the centre of a burgeoning industrial biotechnology sector. It encompasses everything from industrial chemicals to synthetic resins, and from fertilizers and formulated products to petroleum refining.

Here you can access brownfield lands with services including steam, wastewater treatment and “behind-the-fence” electricity, as well as serviced industrial and greenfield lands. You will also find the expertise you need, including: specialized engineering, machining, environmental services, custom metal fabricating, industrial pipefitting and boiler-making firms.

Abundant natural gas and biomass feedstocks

Multiple pipelines transport natural gas, natural gas liquids and crude oil from all major North American regions, including the Marcellus and Utica basins, into Ontario. Ontario is also rich in agricultural and wood biomass feedstock, giving you reliable and ready access to the raw materials you need.

Access to global markets Located in the heart of North America’s industrial heartland, Ontario is within a day’s drive of 141 million consumers and is part of the US$19-trillion market under the North American Free Trade Agreement. Our extensive road, rail, air and marine transportation infrastructure offers easy access to global markets.

Skilled, industry-tailored workers

Our colleges and universities collaborate with industry and produce highly trained graduates in the science and engineering disciplines. 27 Ontario universities and colleges award degrees and diplomas in Chemical Engineering, Applied Chemistry and Chemical Process and Production.

An innovative R&D hub Ontario is home to outstanding research and academic institutes in the field of industrial biotechnology. Our world-class hub of private-public partnerships and commercialization centres can help build your bioproduct capacity with expert advice, funding support for pilot plant and new technology demonstration facilities.

GLOBAL INVESTORS CHOOSE ONTARIO

NOVA Chemicals is a leading producer of plastics and chemicals. Recently, NOVA Chemicals invested approximately $250 million to convert its Corunna, Ontario ethylene cracker to handle up to 100% natural gas liquids and became the first company to use ethane derived from the Marcellus shale deposit. The company also announced a further $300 million in investments to increase production and source additional Marcellus and Utica shale gas-based feedstock supply for its Ontario facilities.

NYSE-listed BioAmber, a global leader in the manufacture of bio-succinic acid, selected Sarnia, Ontario over 100 other sites to build what will be the world’s largest bio-succinic acid plant. The plant will have an initial capacity of 30,000 tonnes per year and be operational in early 2015.

In Ontario, BioAmber found a location that offered access to major markets, a skilled workforce, competitive energy costs, a reliable supply of affordable, easily available raw materials, and a government committed to supporting the development and commercialization of new, green technologies.

THE BOTTOM LINE Ontario provides investors and chemical companies with

everything they need to develop and produce cost-effective,

innovative products and services for the North American and

global marketplace.
