Background• Veridian Corporation
– One of the largest utilities in the province– Innovation, service, efficiency, economic development, social
responsibility– At the forefront of smart metering, conservation and demand
management, (powerWISE), plug-in hybrid vehicles, green initiatives and energy cluster development (business, government, education cluster)

• Ontario Energy Association (OEA)– The 190-member Ontario Energy Association (OEA) is Ontario’s premier
energy trade organization. The OEA represents firms involved in the transmission, distribution and marketing of natural gas, and thegeneration, transmission, distribution and marketing of electricity across Ontario. OEA members together employ about 32,000 Ontarians and last year accounted for almost $35 billion in market revenues.

Smart Meter Deployment
• Smart meters currently being deployed in 10 of Ontario’s 83 electric utilities– 10 utilities represent 67% of Ontario’s residential customers
• Phase 1 deployment target 1.02M smart metersby December 31, 2007
• Currently installed 934.7K or 92% of target• Centralized Meter Data Management Repository
currently being developed and tested by IESO • TOU pricing pilots conducted by 6 LDCs to observe
customer behaviour– Small number of customers currently being billed on TOU rates
• Timing for billing on TOU rates yet to be determined

LDC Implementation Strategies
• Varies from LDC to LDC• Smart Meter Technology
– Coalition of Large Distributors (CLD) mainly Elster for first phase– Topography, geography may necessitate different technologies
in Phase 2 deployment
• Smart meter deployment– Veridian – internal staff augmented with contractors– Toronto Hydro – internal staff
• Smart Meter Data Collection– Veridian – outsourced to third party for initial deployment– Other CLD members - internal
TOU Rate Structure
TOU Pilots
• Newmarket Hydro– Smart thermostats in conjunction with TOU pricing and critical peak
rebates• Oakville Hydro
– Impact of sub-metering residential condos and then the incremental impact of TOU rates
• Veridian Connections– TOU pricing involving mid sized general service customers– Compare price elasticity of general service customers with residential
customers• Hydro One
– Impact of real time in home displays , smart thermostats and TOUpricing
• Peterborough Distribution– TOU pricing and thermal storage heating for social housing– TOU pricing and residential appliance controllers
• Hydro Ottawa– Impact of three price structures on customer behaviour
• TOU prices• TOU prices with a critical peak price• TOU prices and critical peak rebate
Meter Data Management Repository (MDMR)
• Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) project managing the development of a centralized MDMR
• IESO to create Smart Meter Entity to run MDMR• Five LDCs have been piloting MDMR with IESO• IESO has recently begun LDC registration, testing &
implementation– Targeted at 18 month process
• First set of utilities are scheduled to be live shortly, Veridian will be in next group
Lessons Learned• Pre notification of customers prior to smart meter
installation• Deploy electronic work force management tool• Involve IT early in the process• Dedicate staff solely to smart meter project • Take digital picture of every meter removed• Technology is rapidly evolving• Internal process redesign will be extensive• Many impacts throughout the organization
– Engage cross functional team• Effective customer communication strategy will be
imperative for successful launch of TOU rates• Engage all stakeholders• Even without TOU yet, neighbours want smart meters
when people down the street get them – as awareness builds its becoming trendy
Customer CommunicationsBuild Anticipation
Customer Communication
The Future
Customer TOU communication program– Possible integration with successful powerWISE conservation
advertising (David Suzuki TV ads)
• Outage management• Next round of meter RFPs – London, CLD – price down,
functionality up?• More local renewable energy with smart meters, smart
grids and control• Plug-in vehicles with smart interfaces to control charging
cycle and grid support• The work all of you are doing is very important to our and
our children’s future• The future is now and limited only by our imagination…
