The James F. Dicke College of Business Administration• Ranked in the top 111 undergraduate

business schools in the nation by Bloomberg BusinessWeek (2010). The James F. Dicke College of Business Administration earned high marks in the nine categories used for the rankings, including an A+ in “Teaching Quality.”

• AACSB International – Earned excellence; among the best business colleges in the world.

ONU named in “Great Schools, Great Prices” category by U.S. News & World Report in America’s Best Colleges 2010. Schools recognized in this category offer the best value as it relates to their academic quality. The higher the quality of the program in relationship to the investment made by students, the greater the value.

What is an education of value? It is one that offers rigorous academics, and allows students an unlimited number of opportunities

for training, experiences and enrichment, so that after graduation there are [truly] successful outcomes! Our placement rates in all of our colleges bear this out.

A great education is an investment. Ohio Northern invests in the success of its students by offering more than $51 million in gift assistance as well as additional resources in the form of loans and work opportunities. We know that, to make dreams happen, it takes some investment on the part of families too.

Our professional financial aid staff works with each and every family to make the Northern education possible. We offer an individualized approach to families of the most motivated, talented students: a combination of merit scholarship, grants and other aid.

Ohio Northern has many nationally recognized colleges and programs, and that is why I chose ONU. I could go to a

The Arts at Northern

Ohio Northern was named as one of the country’s top 200 creative programs in Creative Colleges: A Guide for Student Actors, Artists, Dancers, Musicians and Writers.

The performing arts include theater, musical theater, music, international theater production and dance (minor).

The Freed Center for the Performing Arts

• More than 100 annual events and performances, including headliners, theater, dance and music events

• Each season brings 30-40 professional guest artists to campus

• A unique International Play Festival, international tours, a professional series, a Children Series, an educational series and outreach activities

The Art and Design program

Four major programs, including advertising design, art education, graphic design and studio arts, are offered in a professional and liberal arts environment that contributes to student exposure to form, theory and practices.

• Required of all majors, a year-long investigative research project synthesizes a student’s liberal arts and professional education and culminates in a public presentation demonstrating knowledge of concepts, theories, issues, form, methods and materials.

• An in-house design studio and course offer real-world exposure to business and professional experiences.

The University exhibition venues include two galleries on campus. The Elzay Gallery of Art and the Stambaugh Studio Theater Gallery showcase the work of invited artists and designers as well as the work of students, faculty and alumni.

The Arts at NorthernONU turns out well-rounded students who can major in the fine or performing arts or participate in them as they major in other academic areas.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in New York City selected Carol M. Wilson, a junior double major in history and professional writing from Royal Oak, Mich., as one of 10 Gilder Lehrman History Scholars

for 2010. This Gilder Lehrman award is the most distinguished in the nation for students studying U.S. history. Wilson was selected from among 220 applicants from 150 of the top university history programs. Past recipients have gone on to study at the most prestigious graduate programs in the United States and Britain.

abundant opportunities,

During the 2009-10 academic year, students from across all majors studied in China, Costa Rica, Cuba, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Spain, Australia and the United Kingdom.

Prestigious Scholarships and Undergraduate Research

Senior Joshua Szekely, a chemistry major from Madison, Ohio, was selected as a 2010 Goldwater Scholar by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program. For six consecutive years, Ohio Northern students have been the recipients of this premier award honoring those in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.

In addition, junior Stephanie Ash, a physics major from Beavercreek, Ohio, and Mitchell Thayer, a junior physics major from Painesville, Ohio, received honorable mention honors in the competitive national scholarship program.

Michael Storey, a sixth-year pharmacy student, is serving as a member of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Policy and Legislative Affairs Advisory Group. The group is comprised of 10 students from

all over the country with the purpose of mediating between students and the ASHP on various policy issues. “The main focus of our group is to get students involved in the health care legislative process.”

This summer, Stephanie Hicks, a biochemistry major from Wadsworth, Ohio, did research with Dr. Robert Lamb, professor of chemistry, chemistry/biochemistry, which included studying the contents of dry and wet deposition. Wet deposition, which is the washout of the smaller particles, is expected to be particles that have traveled from the west.

This work will set the direction of a continuing seasonal study of airborne particles to determine if the agricultural contributions are replaced by industrial inputs during the winter and spring months.

Sydney Kuhlman, a musical theater and international theater production major, traveled across the ocean for a two-

month opportunity to stage-manage for the theater at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology in New Zealand.

Evan Roberts, a communication arts major, utilized his public relations expertise to help “build brands” with Liggett Stashower in

Cleveland, Ohio, an advertising and public relations firm that focuses on brand-building for clients, especially in the building products industry. Some of Liggett’s clients include Glidden™ paint, Duck® brand duct tape and Freshaire Choice™.

Eric Holbrook, a mechanical engineering major, did a six-month assignment with Caltech/NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., where he worked in the Planetary

Sample Acquisition and Handling Group. His main focus was the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), the next Mars rover that is scheduled for launch in 2011.

Jonathan Syrigos, a junior chemistry major, had a fast-paced summer of learning and living in an entirely new culture. Syrigos was selected to be a research intern at AB Mauri, an international firm

and division of Associated British Foods. Syrigos was placed in its Sydney, Australia, plant to monitor the making of yeast.

Syrigos’ project focused on improving the accuracy of sugar tests and initiating the operation of the LECO machine. As an intern, Syrigos was expected to understand the company protocols and navigate the hierarchy of the organization to receive approval or information. This was an invaluable real world lesson. To fulfill his role, Syrigos utilized his background in chemistry, his confidence to question, and his time management skills gained from Northern.

He greatly admired his work comrades and found Sydney to be a highly diverse and enriching city. Syrigos, who is also active in the Northern Christian Fellowship at ONU, joined Hillsong Church in Sydney to take part in their worship and fellowship. He met amazing friends and truly experienced the truth that, “God is going to be with me wherever I go.”

ONU is of the high standards that he wanted in a college, and he is happily surprised at how much he is continually enjoying his academic career – his interests are expanded, and his core classes are challenging.

Sample Internships

Sheila Willamowski, a dual major in political science and criminal justice from Lima, Ohio, spent the quarter as an intern in the office of U.S. House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio).

“The internship with Boehner was especially interesting since he has been in the public’s eye so much recently with the passing of the health care legislation,” she said.

As a Congressional intern, Willamowski had access to portions of the Capitol that tourists never see. “With my Cap-ID card, I was granted access to ‘Dome tours’ where I was able to climb up to the top of the Capitol building overlooking the National Mall, which is usually reserved for only the high members of Congress and their guests,” she said.

Willamowski also had a few unique experiences such as serendipitously passing Vice President Joe Biden in the hall, being on the House Floor for the historic vote on the health care bill, escorting the governor of the People’s Bank of China to a luncheon, and working at the Republican National Committee and National Republican Congressional Committee Headquarters.
