Last Day of Term 2
Dear Parents and Carers,
The end of the term is fast approaching and we haven’t had time to think about how that has
happened! Report cards are being finalised and the annual Athletics Carnival is coming up next
week as well as the students celebrating the end of term with a disco. It is hard to believe that
we are also half way through the year of 2018.
School Annual Report
At this time of the year our School Annual Report for 2017 is composed and published. This has
now been uploaded to our website for the community to read. No doubt, 2017 was another
successful year and it is easy to know why that was the case. Our School Opinion Survey was
very positive, and our community of staff, parents and students worked hard to ensure we
excelled. You can access the School Annual Report via this link: https://oonoonbass.eq.edu.au/

If you would like to receive a hard copy let us know and we can print a copy for you.
Outside School Hours Care (OSHC)
Coming soon! Thank you to those parents and carers who completed and returned the survey.
The School Council and the P&C have approved for this to progress. I am now working through
the process of establishing an OSHC program. At the recent P&C meeting the P&C have
endorsed the program going ahead and have decided that they do not wish to conduct the
program. The next step is for the Department of Education to send out tenders so that an
approved agency can apply to conduct a program at Oonoonba State School.
The program will be ready to operate by 2019. However we may be able to establish it for Term
4 2018. I will keep you posted on the progress towards our own OSHC program.
Social Media
This week at parade I reminded staff, students, parents and carers who were present, about the
importance of ensuring that social media is used appropriately. This was prompted by articles
published in the newspapers recently. The lawyer who acts for the Queensland Teachers Union
has also reminded teachers about their responsibilities with social media.
What struck a chord with me when reading those articles was the information that whatever is
posted is there permanently. So it is very important for our students in particular to know that
is the case. There are times when I have heard, “Oh but we took the post down”. Whilst that
might be the case it is there permanently and can have a far more reaching impact down the
track if someone decides to go looking for information.
Social media can be such a good tool if we use it positively and appropriately. I appreciate that
in our school community stakeholders are respectful of the need to discuss issues face to face if
needed.

Positive Promotion of our school
It is always such a proud moment when new enrolments, replacement teachers or visitors to our school let us know that they think
we have a wonderful school. Recently a new family came to our school and told me how they had met people in the community and
when they found out that they were coming to our school, they were so positive about it. Thank you to those of you who promote
our school like this. When we are all working together it makes a difference.

Student of the week—Congratulations to the following students who will receive ‘Student of the Week’ certificates at parade on Monday.
NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOMS…………During this term, 65P students have been learning about
enterprise through our Design and Technology unit. Students had to come up with a solution for
an edible plant takeaway service. Students had to design a product that will hold an edible plant
that came with a healthy recipe and instructions for how to care for plants. It was interesting to
observe students use 21st century learning skills such as creative thinking, communication,
problem solving and critical evaluation. This task would not have been easy without the
generous donation of plants, soil, and recyclable materials from Bunnings Fairfield. At the
culmination of the unit, all edible plants were planted in a vegetable garden beside the
classroom, in which students are regularly maintaining and caring for their plants in hopes to
donate their fresh produce to our School tuckshop. A big thank you to Bunnings Fairfield,
particularly Lee and Devon, for your support in donating these much needed supplies.
News from Music
Next week we have 8 students representing our school at the Townsville and District State Schools Music Teachers Choral Workshop at The Willows State School. This year we have Brett Holland coming up from Brisbane for 4 days to take over 100 singers from various Townsville State Schools through their paces. He’s going to be giving the students extra tips on how to sing and teaching them a new repertoire. At the end of the 4 days, on Friday afternoon, there will be a concert, so that the students are able to show their parents, carers, friends and teachers what they have been learning. The 8 lucky students from our school are Inara Phillis, Mackenzie Hartman, Charlee Waterman from Year 6 and Year 5 students, Chelsea Firth, Angelina Parliaros, Ava Shephard, Lila Quinn and Ashton Campbell. Congratulations also to Emily Goodall 6WJ who recently participated in the Junior Stringfest. Emily received an adjudication and a trophy for her participation in the festival.

Keep in Touch Day
Oonoonba State School was privileged to host the Keep in Touch (KIT) day this term.
Students that are Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing travelled from all across Townsville and as
far as Ayr and Ingham to attend the day.
The purpose of the KIT day is to provide a positive and welcoming environment for students that are Deaf and/or Hard of
Hearing to be amongst students just like themselves and to also bring awareness of their community to the hearing
community.
Our year six classes attended the day and participated in games such as Jenga, Who am I, and card games using only
signed AUSLAN to communicate. They also learned to sign the song from the Greatest Showman, “This is Me”, then
performed it with the Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing students and adults of the upper school.
The AUSLAN Language Models (adults that are deaf themselves and work with our Education Interpreters) sat on a
panel and through the interpreters gave our students an insight to what it was like to grow up deaf. They explained the
difficulties they have encounted due to their hearing loss such as feeling socially isolated due to a lack of communication
devices such as the ones we have today. Some of these stories were an eye opener for many of our students and
teachers alike.
Thank you (Positive Behaviour)
The following students have received “Thank You” cards
this week:
Amaya Gode, Konah Cini, Ava Shephard, Lila Quinn,
Kayley Dawson, Jackson Turnbull, Elliot Ruddell,
Charlee Waterman, Millie Heard, Hannah Klein-
Schiphorst, Nazareth Savage
Congratulations to this week’s winner
