FOOD PANTRY UPDATE
After some evaluation of our
Food Bag program the Mission
Committee has decided to part-
ner with the organization Fami-
ly Promise, who will assist us to
continue obtaining non-
perishable groceries from Sec-
ond Harvest Food Bank. Their
volunteers will also assist us in
packing the bags distributed to
families who have access to a kitchen. For our clients
who may be homeless of who have no access to a kitch-
en we are now providing individuals with $5 gift cards to
local convenience restaurants (McDonald’s, Carl’s Jr.
etc.). We are grateful to Family Promise volunteers for
their generous donation of volunteer manpower to help
us sustain our mission to support those who are in need.
We are still accepting donations of food to support our
food bag program These items include: 'Kitchen' Bags:
Peanut Butter (small), Dry Pasta (1lb bags), Tomato

R. Winston Presnall, Pastor PASTOR’S LETTER
Dear First Church,
Psalm 46:10: Be still and know that I am God.
For me, August marks the third month in the Summer trimester. Summer is quickly ending with its vacations
and leaves of absence. Soon, Fall will be here and a renewal of the ebb and flow of educational programs,
fellowship, Worship. It is good! I am ready. I hope you are. I have missed you. I am ready for the church to
kick it up a notch in the fall.
Perhaps I am ready because Pam and I recently returned from a week
stay at a private ranch in Mexico. The desert landscape skirted up to a
secluded beach with shimmering ocean waves, surf, sand crabs scurry-
ing for shelter. Manta rays made surprising leaps from the watery bed
and came crashing down with a sensational smack. The sound created
an alarm that called us up from our books. “Pay attention!” Nature was
its own entertainment and my own outdoor channel. There was a little
artificial amusement provided by pool side activities: water volleyball,
bingo, crafts, servers with adult beverages. No retreat into a/c or spas
or fine dining restaurants. (Although, you can imagine with several of us
who both love to cook and eat, we did quite well.)
All this to say that I sat a lot. More so than I normally do. I took long walks.
I read—choosing to forego the ethics, politics, theology—to bury myself in
Dan Jenkins’ His Ownself. This autobiography is Jenkins’ literary offering
of his experiences as writer for several magazines, including Sports Illus-
trated, as well as major newspapers. He wrote a few books that became
movies, like Semi Tough. Jenkins is a humorist. Easy read.
I found myself more student of the panorama than any of my reading, with
all apologies to Jenkins. Maybe what I needed was to sit and be bored with
it all, if there could be such a fatigue in that paradise. Maybe the whole ex-
ercise at this moment was to sit, be still, listen to the voices of nature’s life
around me and the several inside me. My own voice. The voice of God in
the stillness.
I heard the voice of the Divine more early than late, after an evening’s rest.
Sunrise gripped me. I was an early riser for the dawn’s emerging light each
day. Interesting, a longer sleep presented itself and I got up. It was an al-
most defiant and rebellious stance against rest. But the early start reward-
ed more time to sit, more time to think, too. 7 days of Sabbath rest. A Sab-
bath voice, too.
So, I come back renewed, eager to get stuff done and to feed off the energy of this panorama of people,
tasks, fellowship, study and worship. I hope you are ready, too. Re-created.
Warmly,

OP HIKERS
Saturday • August 13th • 7:30 am • Off-site
Because nobody was able to go
to Palm Springs in July, we'll
take the trip in August.
We will be meeting early be-
cause of the long drive to the
Palm Springs Tram. We will
NOT do the walk down to Idyll-
wild this time. This will be our "Once in 10 years" ride
up the Palm Springs Tram and walk to San Jacinto
Peak and back down to the tram (about 3.5
miles). It's a new tram that revolves to give you a
changing view of the valley as it takes you up to the
top. John Muir described it like this: "The view from
San Jacinto is the most sublime spectacle to be
found anywhere on this earth." Bring lots of water and
a sack lunch. It will be warm and dry. Meet at the
small parking lot on Maple and Orange streets at 7:30
am - note change of time. Persons of all ages who are
interested in hiking, fellowship and the outdoors are
invited to participate in the OP Hiker program. For
more information, including info about this month's
hike, please contact Ellie Schilder: 714 310 6343
(cell).

HEALTH MINISTRY
August is National Immunization
Awareness Month. According to the
Center for Disease Control (CDC) we
all need immunizations (also called
vaccines or shots) to help protect us
from serious illnesses. It is important
to know which shots you need and
when to get them. All adults need a
seasonal flu shot
every year. Other
shots work best
when they are
given at certain
ages. There are
schedules for shots for children and
adolescents that you can obtain from
your doctor. People aged 60 or older
should get a shot to prevent shingles if
they had chickenpox in the past. Peo-
ple 65 or older should get two pneu-
mococcal vaccines - one dose of
PCV13 (conjugate vaccine) followed by
one dose of PPSV23 (polysaccharide
vaccine). Adults also need to have a
shot for tetanus and diphtheria every
ten years.

July News
"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it."
- Proverbs 22:6
Summer at the Orange Presbyterian Pre-School has been blessed with fun
days: crazy hair day, pajama day, sports day and more. At this writing we
have two water play days planned in our wonderful playground. We are giving
tours and enrolling for fall and our teaching
team is already planning for "Back to
School/Open House" in September. Many
of Our Pre-K graduates start kindergarten
this month. We look forward to them
stopping by and hearing all about their
kindergarten experiences.
Thank you congregation for your continued prayers for your pre-school
that teaches "Love One Another." I always think the best way to know
God is to love many things. At your Pre-school the children are
surrounded by love. The garden with Ms. Betty, the library with Ms. Dee, the teaching team, singing,
praising and praying and at the top of the list is God's ever present love. Most parents that have "toured"
the pre-school since it opened tell us they felt the love as soon as they walked in the door. A few years
ago Theresa Bouyer painted our "Love One Another" motto on the hall in the pre-school - we are grateful.
Wish list: small cups for wee little hands, baby wipes, small & large paper plates for crafts, fish crackers,
your old towels when you get new ones and anything you want to bless us with. Thank you.
Kids Fun Facts:
In the course of an average lifetime, while sleeping you might eat around 70 assorted insects and 10
spiders - or more!
Like fingerprints, everyone's tongue print is different.

Lorna & granddaughter Kaia who just
graduated from the Pre-school.

PAIRS AND SPARES BRUNCH
Saturday • August 6th • 9:00 am • GSCS
We continue our study of the
book 'Men Are From Mars, Wom-
en Are From Venus' by Dr. John
Gray. This lighthearted look at
gender differences between men
and women, though stereotypi-
cal, offers some noted insights
to help us understand how we
relate to each other. Please pur-
chase a copy of the book. It is
available in paperback and
ebook. Childcare will be provid-
ed. RSVP to the church office so we know how many
to expect: 714 538 2341.
GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP
Friday • August 5th • 10:00 am • GSCS
Our Grief Support Group
meets on the first Friday of
every month. Please feel
free to invite your friends
and family who may benefit
from these important ses-
sions. Light refreshments
will be available as we discuss the stages and com-
plications surrounding our grief work. Contact the
church office for more information, or to let us know
you will be attending: 714 538 2341. We now have a
dedicated Grief Support page on our website which
lists a number of topics for printed resources that
can be provided from the church office. Visit
www.firstpresorange.org under ‘Outreach’.
FAITH & PRACTICE
Sundays thru August • 11:20 am • Flippen Chapel
The Bible is full of “colorful” charac-
ters whose sinful lives have been a
conduit for God’s great work. Barba-
ra Essex explores “bad boys” and
“bad girls” of the Bible in two books
by those titles, respectively. We will cover two bad
boys and two bad girls in August. Come join us as
we learn about the ways God’s Providence has em-
ployed the lives of imperfect people.
BOOK CLUB
Wednesday • August 24th • 12:00 pm • E101
For August, the Book Club will be read-
ing a very interesting book titled
"Elizabeth is Missing", by Emma Healey:
“Literature is replete with unreliable nar-
rators, but you’ve never encountered an
unreliable narrator like the one in
Healey’s mournful and luminous debut
novel...Maud Horsham isn’t remotely
evil. She’s not pathologically dishonest, nor does she
have some deep, dark secret to hide. Her unreliabil-
ity comes simply from the fact that she’s elderly and
her memory is failing fast. On top of this, she’s abso-
lutely sure that her friend Elizabeth is missing.”
Bring a sack lunch if you wish and join us for an in-
teresting discussion of this amazing book written by
someone who isn't even 30 years old!!! Call Lynda
Stewart if you have any questions: 714-639-5076.

Our Architects are currently working on plans to modify the existing pre-school.
These changes will increase the current enrollment which will provide additional in-
come and provide a larger base of children when the new facility opens. This reno-
vation should be finished by January 2017.
The Architects are simultaneously working on exhibits to submit to the City Planning
Department by October 1st, 2016 for the overall Site Redevelopment Plan. These
plans and drawings will then be reviewed by the Design Review Committee and the
Planning Commission of the City. The goal of this review will be to obtain a Condi-
tional Use Permit for the entire project and will allow the Architects to proceed with
construction drawings for the brand new Early Childhood Education Center. It will
be situated on the property currently occupied by the Grand Street Parking Lot; and
it is anticipated that the new pre-school will open in January 2018.
It takes time (and much patience) for all of the elements of the design process to come together and the
fruition of labor to be seen. Dialogue continues with representatives of several program groups in the
church. Please continue to pray for the Site Redevelopment Task Force as they meet on your behalf.
NEW COFFEE FACILITIES
Have you noticed the new
coffee pots for fellowship
hour? Not only do we have
new coffee pots but an en-
tire new Bunn coffee brew-
ing system! Our new set-up
can brew 2 3-liter pots of
coffee simultaneously in
about 5 minutes. Our
large, heavy coffee pots
filled with hot water no longer have to be carried,
which is much safer for our volunteers.
