From the VicarThe Boss’s’ Leaving Party: From January to June, in myhouse, as a child, there was a birthday to celebrate nearlyevery month, (6 of us children and mum and dad), and thenas the family has grown, the celebrations have grown withthem. I am sure yours is the same.The church has its fair share of celebrations and the nextcelebration for us is Ascension Day, when we mark themoment when Jesus returned to heaven. If you have everexperienced a lovely spiritual/divine moment, religious experience, whatev-er word you like to use, you will know how difficult it is sometimes to retellthe story, but the ascension of Jesus’ ‘disappearing into heaven’ is record-ed in Mark, Luke and Acts in the bible.If I were to comment on it using modern parallels, I would say, that atascension the writers were describing the leaving party for Jesus, minusthe streamers, balloons and cake. All the farewell speeches had alreadybeen said, Jesus had already told the disciples to expect him to leave. Hehad already prayed for them and encouraged them to keep the firm goingand he had given them precise details about how to do that. Instead of thedisciples sending Jesus off with a present, Jesus had left instruc-tions and left a present that he told them would arrive a little afterhis absence, and that they should wait!! That’s a tough ask.Company: JC & Friends. Company Motto: “That they may all be one”. Soare we talking here about one nuclear family, one extended family, onenational family, one international family or one cosmic family.My relationship with Jesus tells me that Jesus was speaking about a cosmicunity with all creation, because when the ‘present’ finally arrived, ie theHoly Spirit of God, it just happened to come when everyone was around.[Here I am straying into the territory of the next church celebration ofPentecost]When the Holy Spirit came they were all gathered together in one place.Then there is a long list of different cultures and peoples, with differentlanguages, and all the types that human beings come in. They were thereon that day ‘devout Jews from every nation under heaven’ as the bible putsit, and many more others beside.Maybe, you are thinking of the next present for someone in your family,hoping that you make the right choice, in order to bring some happiness onthe birthday, anniversary, baby birth, graduation, exam success, healthimprovement etc etc.Jesus’ life showed us that he too wanted to ensure that we should be‘happy/blessed’ in our lives, and he demonstrated this by his own life. Howto live and love, how to die, how to rise above and how to live out the firm’smotto. As I say, it is a tall ask, and clearly we have a lot more growing todo in achieving this oneness, but it’s okay, because typically of God, thebible tells us that Jesus is with us anyway, through His Spirit and at somestage he will return to restore all things and claim you. Until then, wecontinue to bless and be blessed.

Love and blessings, Karen

PRAYERS IN THE SUNSHINEThank you Lord, for the benefits we enjoy in the sunshine and warmermornings. It is so lovely to wake up to the music of the song birds – farmore pleasant than John Humphrys on a dark winter morning! Now thatmaybe we find it easier to get ourselves up and about, it would be good tooffer some prayers in the sunshine, whilst we amble around the village.If anyone would like to join me for prayers in the sunshine – we shallleave the church at 7.30 am and pray for just 30 minutes at variousvenues throughout the village. Bring the dogs if you would like to – themost important thing is to pray. All sorts of prayers allowed!! Silent orspoken. You may wish to bring a symbol of your love for God eg a crossor a stone/flower/icon etc or something that speaks to you about ourcreator and use this as your prayer offering in the 45 minutes we spendtogether. [Come for a short or longer time as suits] Please see belowthe praying places for the month of May 7.45 am – 8.30 am:

“A tractor as a fashion accessory” isnot a headline you see very often –even in women’s pages! However,that may be about to change. Lastmonth Ongar YFC organised a charitytractor run – you may have seen uschug through the village. One tractor,owned and driven by an attractiveyoung lady, had had a serious makeo-ver. It was a 1950’s Ferguson TE 20 orlittle grey Fergy, as they are popularlyknown, but this one had had a spec-tacular spray job and whilst still sport-ing the traditional grey engine and rearaxle, its mudguards and bonnet werefinished in a delicate Lady Penelopepink - and inlaid with silver glitter. Thiswas repeated in highlights to the oilfiller, and dipstick and created a dra-matic effect that just had to be seen.No doubt it will feature at the YoungFarmers Country Show next month,just across the road at Boyton Hall. Ifyou STILL have not been, make a datefor 22nd May - and see the new fashionicon, alongside lots of fascinatingcountry things.

The chestnut trees are bursting intocandle along with the whitethorn, ormay flower, to provide nature’s annualspectacle; surely, the most beautifultime of year, even more beguiling withthe sunshine upon it, how I love thisseason. However, should that sun stillbe relentlessly shining when you readthis then something serious will begoing on down on the farm. Comment-ing here on a prolonged spell ofweather is sure to change it beforepublication, and I sure hope that hap-pens this time! Writing this on MaundyThursday, the weather is literally a hot

topic. Glorious sunshine day after day,it feels more like July than April, and isprobably the fairest spring I can everremember; but it is getting very dry. Noreal rain for two months and we arenow into the period when crops growmost rapidly and need lots of moistureto take up nutrients and sustain thatgrowth. This morning BBC Essex in-terviewed Robert, my nephew andfarming partner, about how the dryweather was affecting the crops. Hequite rightly said that on our heavy(high clay content) soils, crops areholding up well so far, but farmers onlighter, gravely soils were already see-ing drought stress. My father oftensaid ‘it’s a pity fine weather does anyharm’, but it does if prolonged, andshould we continue into May withoutrain, farmers around Roxwell and in-deed England, will be in unknown ter-ritory and deeply troubled. We do notknow how a drought this early in thegrowing season will affect things. If wesee no rain for a further month thencrops will be literally dying in the fields,unable to take up fertiliser or form aseed head. Leaves of cereal crops willfirst curl up in a tube shape to mini-mise further moisture loss but thenmust wither and die. Spring sowncrops with shallower rooting systemswill be first to suffer, but if wheat cropssown last autumn should follow, whatprice then a loaf of bread? Not onlyfarmers, but also life on earth dependson summer rain of some sort. Withoutany we are in deep shtuk. Anyway,let’s hope plan A, above, works!If you want to contact me on anythingagricultural, or contribute an article,email me at [email protected] or call07973 627452. Ralph Metson

INTER-VILLAGE OLYMPIC GAMES???‘In view of the national excitement that will surround the 2012 London Ol-ympics, it is proposed that local villages might hold an ‘Inter-Village Olym-pic Games’, thereby strengthening our sense of community and having alot of fun together’.Is this a suggestion you agree with and would like to help develop?A number of people have discussed how this might work and are liasingwith neighbouring parishes to gauge interest there too. Current thoughtsare events would start in spring 2012, some maybe taking place on the cel-ebration day for the Queen’s diamond Jubilee, and would culminate on aGrand finals day on 7th July at a giant BBQ party.

Possible village groupings considered are– Roxwell village with Boyton Cross; Willingale, Berners Roding, Beauchamp Roding;

Good Easter, High Easter, Chalk End,Margaret Roding Highwood, Radley Green, Cooksmill Green, Newney Green;

The sporting and other activites could include whatever people wanted to do.There’s already an interest in cricket, football, tug o’ war, bridge, badminton,running, equestrian, bowls, tennisNot all events need be seriously competitive, but rather be inclusive, family-orientated and fun. Already scheduled and annual events in various villageswhich take place around this time could be given an Olympic spin andincluded in the events programme, thereby drawing the villages together.The local schools would have a key role, as would the Churches, andhopefully, most local organisations. March 23rd. We had an afternoon of Bingo and Quiz as our plannedspeaker had to change dates. After tea and biscuits served by Valerieand helpers, we had the raffle. This was given by Pauline Spink andChris Clark. The sweet jar was won by Sheila Johnson.April 13th. We all went by car to Hylands for lunch. It was a lovely dayand we were well looked after by the staff. As we were out there was noraffle or sweet jar this week.We have a few outings coming up and would welcome any new orprospective members to join us. Come and give us a try!

Children’s Page: (Ages 7- 12years)

I can remember when I was quite young on a dayout with my family and being allowed for the firsttime to spend a little time apart from my parentsand to meet up at an agreed time and place.Adults sometimes forget what it is like to be younger and so if youfeel you can help me with those memories – I would love to hear fromyou. Thanks. KarenI hope that you feel that Roxwell Church is there for you and wewould love to know what else we can do to make sure that you alwaysfeel this way. Adults were asked to fill out a census in March. Hereis a short questionnaire for you, the younger members of our village.Please answer where you can, and please post the replies to thevicarage................................................................................................................................Do you ever think about God?

Do you find it helpful to think about God?

Do you have your own bible?

Would you like to learn more about the life of Jesus?

Could you tell us how you would like to do this?

Thanks so much for answering these questions. It will be a greathelp to know what you think. If you want to include your name – thatis fine, but it is not necessary. Finally, please check with yourparents that it is okay to complete this..Please post to: The Vicarage Roxwell

Essex County Winter Champions 2005-2006Essex County Summer Champions 2007 & 2009

We now have the full details of the completion for the Winter League,Division one West and despite a great effort from our bowlers we managedto finish in only Fourth position. I say “only” but the final figures show ourbowlers grafted hard to finish only five points behind Chelmer Village whofinished in first position and only one point behind Purleigh and Pleshey asthe League Table shows:

So all the signs indicate that the bowling skills are increasing across theDivision One West and we need to be part of it. We have increased ourstrength in bowlers over the last year or so and those more recent inclusionsare already showing good skills. However, we still need more bowlers andthe increase in new residents in the village may provide some new bowlers.The old patter still applies as follows;if you’re interested in Carpet Bowling then pop into the Village Hallon any Monday night, which is practice night. You can have a try atbowling or just enjoy watching. Enjoy a drink at the bar or have achat with the bowlers. Hoping to see you there, Jim Harrington

The April and May Recorders were devoting pages to letters from potentialRoxwell Parish Councillors explaining why they think we should vote for them.Last month we had 3 prospective Councillors write saying who they were andwhy they wanted to represent us. Unfortunately, since then, nominations closedand once again not enough people had been nominated to require an election.Also unfortunately those who did seek nomination but hadn’t responded to theinvitation in the March and April Recorders for them to write in, seemed toconsider it unnecessary to write and explain to all Parishioners who they are andwhy they want to represent and what they want to achieve for Roxwell over thenext 4 years. Hopefully they might like to correct that for next month’s Recorder,space will always be allocated for personal aims and Roxwell connections ofCouncillors who will be managing a budget of virtually £14,000 collected fromresidents this year.In fact there will still be vacancies for Parish Councillors when the new ParishCouncil meets for the first time on May 11th at 7.30 in the School. The newParish Council has powers to adopt people onto the Council if they wish, so ifyou are interested in becoming a Councillor and yet failed to get your nomina-tion papers in on time or were just nervous of being on a ballot paper, write tothe Clerk of the Parish Council, Mrs. L. Green, 23 Glebe View, West Mersea,Colchester, CO5 8GH expressing your interest in being co-opted, - but do itNOW to ensure the letter gets there before the 11th.Have you noticed the original lamp posts along the street did get painted byECC at last following the campaign last year? Along our 300m Street we nowhave 6 black lamp-posts(one still awaiting a new light) 12 green ones, one silverone and one concrete one. Nice!And the nice new tarmac path from Church Green to the Street that ECC hasat last repaired. Shame that in one section the weeds are already lifting thetarmac presumably because the contractors didn’t prepare the base correctly!But at least the new path is just in time for the grand re-opening of the shop!Best wishes to Maria and Dave in this most important endeavour for the village.Please support them as much as you can so that they can win back the PostOffice and the National Lottery soon. It’s fantastic that they’ll be open 7 days aweek and open ‘til 8pm on Mondays to Saturdays. GOOD LUCK!!Finally, you’ll haveread in the last 2Down on the Farmarticles by RalphMetson about thevintage tractors go-ing through the vil-lage. The launch of www.roxwellvillage.co.ukA Roxwell Village website has been talked about for some time. Weare pleased to say that with a few very committed individuals the site isnow live and we want your feedback!With any website, it is only as good as the content on the pages. Thisis where we need your help. We want to make it a real hub of informa-tion and the first place you go to (alongside the Roxwell Recorder) forinformation on the village, to find out what’s going on, and who to con-tact if you need anything.

 Every group within the village has a page to make use of asthey wish.

 If you have something to tell the village, make sure we knowabout it - it’ll go in the Recorder and on the website from justone notification!

 We will also be using the site to gain feedback from you onevents and on ideas for future events.

Please, please send us your views. The more people we can get in-volved, the better the village will prosper and benefit.We will also be welcoming any local businesses that would like to ad-vertise on the site. Due to a very smart web designer, it will certainlyopen up your businesses to a wider audience outside the village onGoogle searches. If you already advertise in the Roxwell Recorder,we’ll be making arrangements for them to also appear on the site.www.roxwellvillage.co.uk will be a showcase, a shop window for thevillage we love. Please help us to make it a great shop window! Whynot make Roxwell your home page and then always be up to date withwhat’s happening in our village.
