They took over the general store, today known as the Richmond Village Store, and both the Tzortzis’ and the Store became a Richmond institution. Customers were always met with a welcoming smile from Vicki and a cheeky comment from Steve, endearing them to many. They were young parents willing to work hard to provide for their family, and work hard they did. Seven days’ trading is hard, but they never complained and were all too willing to help in their community. The ‘Greeks’ of Richmond were proud of their heritage and were always talking about Greece and her produce, especially what they had just cooked for dinner! Any shop visitors during dinner when Vicki was cooking were offered a taste. Many locals have a story involving Steve and Vicki! From the KGV soccer ground where his beloved Olympia played, to the local football field supporting the Richmond Blues, Stelios was an active and ever- present fan, supporter & member. Steve was President of Olympia and steered it to great heights and success in the 1980s. Even after the loss of his beloved soulmate Vicki, Steve continued their legacy of community support and activity. He supported Richmond and was a valued and respected person. His life philosophy was simple. Work hard, be brave & enjoy life. His presence is missed in our small township. Everyone misses his smart wit, cheeky comments, his smile, and of course telling anyone that disagreed with him to simply ‘get out of my shop’! St Andrew’s Richmond Highland Gathering Whether you have Scottish heritage or not, mark down Sunday 21 February in your diary for the 2016 St Andrew’s Richmond Highland Gathering. The Gathering will be held on the Village Green from 10am-4pm, and will feature the sounds and spectacle of pipe bands, highland and country dancing, choirs and bands. Food and refreshments will also be available, making this a great day out for the family. The Gathering is presented by the St Andrew Society and supported by Clarence City Council. The Society was formed in 1960 and aims to hold a Burns BBQ in January, an Ausmas and AGM in July, and a November St Andrew’s Day event in addition to the Highland Gathering. Society membership is $10/yr. Contact Secretary Di Cornish 6272 5926 evenings or 0408 528 658. New Clarence City Council contact numbers Clarence Council has adopted a new telephone system that has resulted in some numbers being changed. The general enquiries number is now 6217 9500, whilst the after hours contact number remains unchanged. An updated list of frequently used Council telephone numbers is available on the Council website. Tasmanian Fruit Wine and Cider Festival The annual fruit wine festival returns to the Bellerive Boardwalk on 31 January. Exhibitors will showcase fruit wines, liqueurs, fortified wines, ciders and meads for tastings and sales. Try these unusual beverage styles whilst listening to musical entertainment and enjoy a selection of delicious food offerings. The festival will be held between 12-4pm. Water Conservation on Total Fire Ban days Spring and summer have so far had their share of hot weather, and we are likely to see more fire weather before the season wanes. Combined with persisting dry conditions, it is timely to remember the importance of conserving water resources on Total Fire Ban days. TasWater asks customers to minimise non-essential water use on these days to conserve water for firefighting and prevention. This means limiting uses such as garden watering, lawn sprinklers and washing cars with the hose. Dry conditions are already impacting the region, with Colebrook placed on Level 1 Water Restrictions on 5 January, and allocation restrictions continuing to impact the South East Irrigation Scheme. School Holiday activities Looking for activities to keep the kids entertained over the holidays? There are a number of activities on offer in the local area. Donna at Just Kidding Toys, Crafts and Activities hosts a hive of junior activity, with a children’s First Aid Course (8 Jan), Great Scavenger Hunt (14 Jan), Scarecrow Making (20 Jan) and Jewellery Making (29 Jan) on offer. Call 6260 2091 to book. Kids’ tennis coaching is available at the Richmond Courts (see the Tennis update overleaf). Miniroos Kick-off junior soccer sessions are available at Pembroke Park, Sorell (www.miniroos.com.au) for 4-9y.o. girls and boys from 11-16 January. The Richmond Classic Car Show on January 31 may prove a distraction for young and old, which will coincide with the 2-day Richmond Farmers & Makers Mega Market on 30-31 January. IN MEMORY - STELIOS (STEVE) TZORTZIS see page 4 But that was Steve. No hidden agenda, what you saw is what you got. A strong, hard-working, honest man who loved Richmond and cared deeply for his children and grandchildren. There will never be another Steve Tzortzis. One local recently commented that Steve’s input and story is as much a part of Richmond’s history as the Richmond Bridge, such was the strong presence and influence of Steve. Now that is a legacy to be proud of. ‘Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain’. You taught us how to dance and how to live our lives to the fullest. We love you and miss you both immensely. - Tina, Kosta and Eirini Tzortzis. As reported in the December CRV News, a citrus grove will be planted at the Richmond Community Food Garden as a tribute to the generosity of Steve to his local community.

It is also anticipated that others will move into new clubs that fit in better with high school logistics. A recent positive meeting with regional school priniciples will lead to the continuation of the the ‘in schools program’ for 2016. At this stage, the Mini Blues expect to field teams for Under 8s through to Under 11s, plus Auskick. There is an opportunity to establish an Under 12s team and an effort will be made to do so.
