Foreword
2020 has turned out to be a year quite different to any other we can recall and I’m sure we all hope
that we will never see another like it.
The Williamson Open was planned like any other and we have done our best to show the work to
advantage even if it is not on the gallery walls. We even got as far as mirror plating the whole lot
ready to hang before the call came to close down. It has also denied me the chance to make
some interesting and provocative juxtapositions and connections in the hang, which has always
been one of my great pleasures. Please don’t think this was an easy option: it has taken even
more time and effort to photograph everything, label and tailor the images to make them available.
Viewing an exhibition online is fascinating because you see everything in the same way: no clue
about the original size, often no way to tell the medium. If it were not for the catalogue numbering,
just by looking at the images, you would often not be able to distinguish paintings from
photographs. In some cases, this is a distraction, in others a positive improvement, and it may
give some exhibitors the opportunity to think about whether they are working in the right way and
at the right scale. It also reinforces to me how difficult it is to select an exhibition purely from
images on a screen, something I have been involved with in the past but it is uncertain experience.
Some things do not change. We have still selected a prize in each section, details below, and we
are still grateful to everyone who has taken the trouble to submit work, the quality of which is
undeniable. I am struck every year by the quality and variety in the photography section,
something I expect in the art section because of the range of media available.
Wirral is strong in voluntary groups that give a platform and a support mechanism for artists and
photographers, they may have had to suspend activities for the moment while everyone self
reflects in isolation, but I hope they come back stronger following this strange period. The
Williamson is also closed for we do not know how long but I am confident that we will return, and I
hope we will continue to have your vital support for the future.

PURCHASE PRIZE ART SECTION
This painting represents a high viz worker on his way home on public transport after a day’s work.
Whilst the portrait aspect, shows a high level of realism, the background fluctuates between
representation and abstraction. A range of techniques were used, with a largely wet on wet direct
approach, as well as scumbled and glazed sections. An integral aspect of my work is the colour; I
will often balance areas of saturated high key colour against a softer palette of more subtle hues.
An ongoing feature in much of my work is the high viz yellow jacket/vest. The luminous colour
presents an exciting challenge for an artist to convey in traditional oil pigments, and when placed
amongst the other more subtle hues, helps create a strong colour design. However, I am not
solely drawn to the high viz jacket as a mere aesthetic device, but also in terms of the
connotations it holds. Despite being worn for visibility, the jacket gives the wearer an anonymity
and almost ‘invisibility’. People rarely see past the superficial veneer of authority, and the
associations of ‘the worker’. This painting is part of a body of work hoping to cast a more personal
light on the subject.

PRIZE PHOTOGRAPHY SECTION
As a photographer, I am less interested in portraying the literal and am more inclined to reinterpret
what I see into something more abstract or expressionist, to show how I see the world.

‘Paintworks’ came about when I recently visited the new head office of the Royal Photographic
Society (RPS) in Bristol. I was attending the RPS to receive the award of a Distinction in Fine Art
Photography for a portfolio of my architectural photographs.
As I was leaving, I spotted some beautiful reflections on one of the walls opposite. In contrast to
the harsh sun, the colours were reflected in soft pastels and, from certain angles, the light was
bending the lines of the walls and window frames. By using double exposure, I was able to create
the effect of brushstrokes, overlaying pinks and greens to give a painterly effect. Given that I was
standing in the middle of an area called Paintworks, named after an old paint and varnish factory
and now a cultural and creative hub, it seemed totally fitting that my photograph should be called
‘Paintworks’ to reflect the location in which it was created.
