St. Joseph School’s Vision Statement
Our vision is to be a family centered, supportive educational
community, striving toward academic excellence.
We will inspire students to become independent thinkers
with a love of learning and a strong family-based foundation.
Our students will develop emotionally, spiritually and
academically to face the challenges of the future
and become responsible leaders of tomorrow.
Newman Connection Our Diocese participates in Newman Ministry's high school
outreach program, called Newman Connection, that
connects 2021 grads to college campus ministries across
the US, and we want all of our parishes and Catholic high
schools to participate. You will be receiving an email from
Newman Ministry in the near future to participate. Please
sign up to participate or you can use this link to sign-up
now: hso.newmanconnection.com. Participating in this
program is simple — you send your student's college
information to Newman Connection, who will pass that on
to the college campus ministers in the fall, plus you can
encourage your 2021 high school grads to download the
Newman Connect app where they can connect, instantly, to
their college campus ministry! The app is new this year, and
more than 100 college campuses are using it already, to
reach Catholic students.

Happy Labor Day weekend! I hope you have a restful one. Next Sunday is my Mass
of Thanksgiving and parish picnic in commemoration of my 40th anniversary of
priesthood. Recently, I had several questions about whether or not the Mass of
Thanksgiving at 3:30pm at St. Joseph Church in Boyd "counted" as the Sunday
obligation. The answer is "YES." You don't need to attend another Mass if you come to the
Mass of Thanksgiving. I understand how busy many of you are and so we kept the
regular schedule of weekend Masses in case the anniversary Mass did not work for you.
Even if you are away for the weekend and get back Sunday afternoon and are able to
attend the picnic, please feel welcome to come to the picnic at Lotz Park in Boyd starting
at 5:00pm. I would only ask that you contact Julie Lingen either by phone (715-644-
5435) or email mail her ([email protected]) with the number attending.
Please do so by Monday so that we can have a proper count for food. Say a little extra
prayer for good weather. Should the weather be inclement, we will have the meal at our
hall in Stanley.
I want to congratulate and extend our gratitude to two of our parishioners, Carol
Meyer and Jean Felber. Carol and Jean recently completed the two-year diocesan Lay
Formation Institute and continued on this summer to complete the instruction and
requirements for the diocesan Leader of Prayer program. Last Saturday I was present for
their commissioning by Bishop Callahan. As Leaders of Prayer, Carol and Jean will be
able to assist leading public prayer and worship in our parish. It is my hope that we will
be able to expand our outreach to health care facilities in our area. They will be able to
help us offer more devotional services in our various locations. Both Carol and Jean are
nurses, and will be helpful extending our pastoral care to the sick. Thanks again for the
time and energy you gave in your formation to assist us more fully in All Saints Parish.
Finally, our troops from Afghanistan are home. While we say a prayer of
thanksgiving for their safety and an end to our 20 year occupation, we need to
continue to pray diligently that this did not unleash the powers of hell on the world.
What we fought was not just a military enemy, we have been fighting a spiritual enemy,
an enemy of incredible evil. The whole nature of the multitude of terrorist groups in the
world is founded on a diabolical view of religion and the human person. One of the
reasons they have been able to commit such atrocities is that they prey on our sincere
and naive belief that everyone believes in the dignity of human life and the human
person. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Demons believe that all we hold to be good is
evil, and what we believe to be truly evil is good. Those who aspire to this are not only
dangerous but deceptive. Lies are used to achieve a desired end. Do not be deceived, but
believe, Jesus teaches us. The devil is prowling like a roaring lion, resist him in your
faith. Continue to pray to St. Michael the Archangel and St. Joseph, terror of demons!
Blessings and best wishes,

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today's readings offer us a message of hope — God is with us and
wants to heal us. May this message come ablaze in our hearts so
that we might live with unwavering faith.
The Gospel presents us with the story of the profound physical
healing of a deaf man with a speech impediment. People brought
him to Jesus and begged for his healing. Jesus took the man off
by himself, touched his ears and his tongue, then proclaimed, "Be
opened!" Immediately he was healed.
This story in our Gospel overwhelms us with comfort and peace
because we have a compassionate God who sees our physical
needs. Yet if we reflect further on this reading, we see that God
uses this moment of physical healing as an opportunity to restore
something much deeper—our souls.
Often, we are blind and deaf to God in our lives. As a result, we
miss countless opportunities to see God working in our day-to-day
moments—through our loved ones, our community, or even a
stranger. We miss the quiet voice of Jesus in our hearts telling us
to choose Him instead of sin, respond in love instead of anger, or
care for someone else in a moment instead of ourselves.
These are how we need to be spiritually healed. And the
scriptures remind us that God is with us and wants to heal us.
This week let us seek God to heal our souls and transform our
hearts. Let us pray that our eyes and our ears might "be open" to
His workings, words, and promptings in our lives.
