OVERVIEW

04 LEEDS BECKETT UNIVERSITY / Title section 05

Leeds Beckett is more than a place to study. It’s a community – where staff and students come together to make a positive difference in the world. Which means, while you’re part of our community, you’re a student but also you’re a partner. And together we’ll be working on the headline issues around health, sport, society, arts, humanities, business, and our built and technological environment.

How does that play out? Our law students, for example, run free legal clinics, our architecture students run a collaborative practice, while our nursing students lent their skills to help out during the pandemic. It’s good to get involved.

Our academics, meanwhile, are experts in addressing the big questions. How can we improve school pupils’ mental health? Why are people afraid of the Covid-19 vaccine? How can we make football more inclusive? What’s the real impact of a bad diet? Together we’ll explore these questions through teaching, learning, and research. You’ll have your own ideas. And we’ll challenge you to think critically. Because in the end that’s what makes the difference – to you, to your career, and to the world.

WECHALLENGE.

WECREATE.

As well as a place for learning, universities are also a centre for some of the world’s top thinkers to carry out their research. Academics at Leeds Beckett inspire, challenge, listen and innovate, all while transforming the way our students think and view the world.

“The communities we’ve worked with have responded very positively. It’s important to remember that it’s not just about problems: these communities have a great deal of resilience.

We want to help communities to empower themselves with that resilience, and to build on it.”

OUR ACADEMIC COMMUNITY

WEEMPOWER.

Dr Maria Maynard School of Clinical & Applied Sciences

People’s environments and backgrounds are a big determining factor in their health. Dr Maria Maynard, a Reader in Public Health Nutrition, works collaboratively across different disciplines to better understand ways in which these inequalities can be tackled, and ultimately, resolved. Whether it’s teaming up with geographers, town planners or local councillors, her research is helping to level the playing field for marginalised communities so they can lead healthy lives.

WEPIONEER.

Dr Jessica van Horssen Senior Lecturer, School of Cultural Studies & Humanities

Senior Lecturer and environmental historian Jessica van Horssen sailed around the UK to assess the extent of plastic pollution on our coastline. Shocked by seeing first-hand the devastating consequences of our throwaway culture, Jessica does the work of a scientist from a historical perspective and asks: ‘How did we get here?’ Through her research and teachings, she explores ways in which making big changes – and making them soon – can start tackling the damage caused to our coastal ecosystems.

Professor Ben Jones Senior Lecturer, Carnegie School of Sport

Professor Ben Jones is a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Physiology. Totally immersed in his specialism, Ben’s work with rugby league team Leeds Rhinos not only informs his lectures, it is also the basis of his professional research. From reducing concussion and improving tackle technique, to lowering the impact of injury in retired athletes, Ben’s research directly supports coaches and teams to do what they do best.

Alexander Miers-JonesBA (Hons) Politics with International Relations

Hello Alex, what brought you to Leeds Beckett?

I chose Leeds Beckett because it had a very good reputation. I applied through clearing and came to an Open Day and spoke to the head of subject for about an hour! It was so nice to have someone spend the time explaining things to me.

What’s the best thing about your course?

My lecturers really inspire me. They’re the best I could possibly hope for and very knowledgeable. They will always answer any questions you have and help you out.

What new skills have you learned?

Studying politics has helped me develop a lot of new skills. I wasn’t particularly comfortable with public speaking when I started university, but now I’m able to talk in front of large groups of people and even chair meetings. The opportunities have been brilliant!

What’s it like being a student in Leeds?

It’s great because there’s so much going on! After graduation I’m thinking about doing a Masters in politics. There are a lot of other universities offering the Masters I’m looking for, but Leeds Beckett is at the top of my list because I know the course and the lecturers.

What’s a typical Leeds Beckett student?

Honestly, there isn’t one. Leeds Beckett welcomes students from all kinds of different backgrounds, and they come here to study for all kinds of different reasons. That’s what makes Leeds Beckett such an exciting, diverse and friendly place to learn. What makes us all different, brings us together.

Leeds Beckett is a place for study, a place for you to develop your skills, gain your degree and find your way into the world. After you arrive, even if it’s just an Open Day visit, you’ll quickly discover that Leeds Beckett is a real community – a thriving, diverse, dynamic community of fellow students and inspiring academic staff. Here, you’ll meet the people who will have a lasting and positive influence on your life, and you’ll be able to make your own contribution to the life of our university. Together, we are Beckett.

We sat down for a cup of tea and a chat with three students who told us what brought them to Leeds Beckett and what’s great about Leeds as a place to study.

Abigail Simmons, Bsc (Hons) Sports Events Management

“At Leeds Beckett there are always people willing to help and support you. From day one you will be made to feel welcome and that’s what I love about it.

My lecturers have taken the time to get to know me and my interests. I wanted to do a placement with Yorkshire County Cricket Club and they advised me on how best to approach them. My placement turned out to be one of the highlights of my course, it helped me to discover what I was interested in, and what I wasn’t.

Some of my lecturers still work in the industry, so they bring real-life experience into the classroom. They have first-hand knowledge to share with you and I found this incredibly valuable.

Leeds is a great student city, it’s vibrant, easy to get around and has something to offer everyone.”

Latoyah Wong, BA (Hons) Working with Children, Young People and Families

“I chose this course because I wanted to make a difference in the community. The thing I enjoy most is the range of social issues we get to discuss. I have also had the opportunity to volunteer as part of my course. I did mine with a youth offending team, but you can choose any social setting. My lecturers are really inspiring too – they’re experts in their field and they’re actively publishing research material.

As a student, I’ve enjoyed meeting people from all walks of life. I’ve found it really easy to make friends at Leeds Beckett as everyone’s friendly and welcoming. That’s what makes Leeds such a great place to be a student. Everyone’s really friendly, it’s compact and it’s got everything you could possibly need.”
