OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES:
an art historical mishmash of
the benefits and challenges
Katherine TaylorOctober 2013
Hey, didn’t we eat
mishmash last night
for dinner?
Searching for relevant and valuable Open
Educational Resources can be frustrating
Who owns this image? Exact photographic copies of two-dimensional public domain
works of art are not copyrightable under U.S. law because such images are not original, yet years after this 1999 ruling, copyright for
many such images continues to be asserted
First, the challenges . . .My value has
been established, but am I not also my own
woman?
Searching for Open
Educational Resources
involves time
There is a lot of available
material, though it’s not all in one
location, and some disciplines
may require more research
than others
Pack a
lunch
Support for Open Educational
Resources may be difficult to sustain:
After one-time start-up funding
disappears, providing support may prove
challenging and expensive; quality
may veer off-course
Dang! There
goes our start-up money!
The non-revocable nature of Creative Commons licenses
may prove somewhat challenging
Sweetie, no one expects you to
understand licensing – but just try to
remember that you can stop offering your
other work under a
CC license.
The potential of Open
Educational Resources is
not well understood, and some may even
feel it threatens
their ownership of intellectual property
Oh no! What’s
happening to my
intellectual property?!
Open Educational Resources saves money for students!
Textbooks are so *!
#$*&! expensive
!
Now we can
afford clothes!
However, on the plus side . . .
Open Educational Resources offers a broad selection of high quality material
So many choice
s!
It’s making
me giddy!
Open Educational Resources offers course material in varied presentation methods for teachers and
students alike
I’ll take whatever is behind
the curtain.
Not me. I’m going for what’s
in the bowl!
Open Educational Resources allows teachers (especially from small or remote
schools) to feel connected with a broader community
The world is bigger than you
know
There’s no one else around
Open educational resources = education for all
What are Americans? I have so much to learn
Even America
