Open Books, Open Minds

Welcome to the Florida Literacy Conference. We appreciate your being with us to celebrate the Conference’s 34th Anniversary. Over the next few days, you will have ample opportunity to learn from your peers, hear from state and national leaders, meet new people and reconnect with old friends and colleagues.

With more than sixty-five workshops and special sessions, we hope that the conference reflects both the diversity of service providers in adult education and literacy and the learners who we serve. Our conference theme “Open Books, Open Minds” is a tribute to the outstanding efforts of teachers, tutors, and administrators throughout Florida. Your work changes lives on a daily basis as adults and families become better readers and learn firsthand how books can open new worlds of opportunity.

On behalf of the Florida Literacy Coalition (FLC), I would like to thank all the individuals who have contributed to the success of this Conference. Without the outstanding support of the Conference Planning Committee, presenters, Adult Learner Committee, and FLC staff, board and volunteers, this event would not be possible.

We are also most thankful to our conference sponsors whose generous support allows us to bring you this quality educational experience. Please visit our exhibitors to learn about a wide range of products and services to assist you in your adult education and literacy work.

Whether this is your first or 34th year at the Florida Literacy Conference, please be assured that we will do our best to make you feel at home. We are here to make your experience an enjoyable one.

“The American Dream is about equal opportunity for everyone who works hard. If we don’t give everyone the ability to simply read and write, then we aren’t giving everyone an equal chance to succeed.”

Keynote Speaker - Janna PeskettWhy is it that some students work doggedly at a difficult task while others give up at the first sign of struggle? Student motivation and resilience is a result of a combination of effective learning strategies and a growth mindset, the belief that mastery can be achieved through effort. Research shows that our implicit beliefs about intelligence determine educational outcomes. Learn how to help adult learners and teachers change their mindsets to develop self-efficacy and resilience.

Janna Peskett began her career in education teaching mathematics to special education high school students, where she realized that, despite others’ expectations, anyone can achieve at high levels.
