SDN FOR VIRTUALIZATION“architecture and tools for the composition of logical infrastructures, that share the same physical substrate.

An enhanced NCP (ASON/GMPLS + PCE) architecture and protocols to use these logical infrastructures to provide advanced transport services coupled with IT services.

Business cases that impact infrastructure providers, network & IT operators and application providers.

Provide an enabler for the integration of dynamic optical network services in cloud computing scenarios.

Architecture definition, design, prototyping and validation

DEFINE VIRTUALVLANs are a virtualization technology.

MPLS is virtualization technology

BGP ( in relation to virtualization) is an MPLS technology

VLAN tags and MPLS tags are not inherently secure or even separate traffic flows.

whatever......

OPENFLOW/SDN PERFORMANCEsome things that you can think of need constant updating of OpenFlow.

This means controller processing / algorithmic performance must be good

THE VALUE OF SDNEach project deploys it’s own assets.

We plan the needed, deploy. And keep adding more until the system is “full”

No “project” ever pays to recover unused assets

THE VALUE OF SDNEarly SDN wins will be configuration management.

It’s area that has most pain, easier to sell, and likely to be adopted.

Second wave will be dynamic path networks

Third wave probably virtual applications such as Flow Balancers, Firewall/Security,

OPENFLOW

106

OpenFlow 1.2 was recently approved.

Major vendors are participating - Cisco, Juniper, Brocade, Ericsson, Nokia etc

OpenFlow led by large companies Google / Yahoo / Verizon and lack of focus on practical applications in the enterprise

SOON. BUT WHENBig vendors are not much interested - busy defending their turf.

Finally releasing proprietary Scripting APIs - Junos SLAX, Brocade OpenScript, Cisco has several XML

There are many startups in the space and there are many segments (infrastructure, controller, apps, silicon, testing etc.)

The technology is sound. People leading development efforts have successfully developed many successful network technologies before.

There is a problem to be solved. 110
