In the radial piston type air motor TAM4 series, pistons (a) are connected to a shaft (c) by connecting rods (b). Compressed air fed from the port A (e) by the rotary valve incorporated into the shaft is supplied to the cylinders in order. When compressed air is fed to the pistons, the cranks are pushed by them, and torque is generated. Port B (f) opposite to the port A serves as the exhaust port. When compressed air is supplied from the port B, the shaft is rotated in reverse, and the port A serves as the exhaust port, instead of the port B.

Our air motor with brake has a negative actuation type double lock brake that always generates brake force by pressing force from the coil spring, and can be released by air pressure. As soon as air pressure is applied to the supply port of the air motor, it is also applied to the brake cylinder, the piston is actuated, and the brake shoe is separated from the brake drum. When running of the air motor is stopped and air pressure is removed, air pressure applied to the brake cylinder is also lost immediately, and the brake shoe is pressed against the brake drum by the coil spring. Brake torque can be adjusted by the brake adjuster screw from the outside depending on the torque required.

Our air motor with decelerator incorporates small decelerators in order to obtain stable rotation and high power

at an extremely low speed.

Characteristics: 1. External gear deceleration system allows two to three speeds.

2. All the gears are heat-treated.

3. The high-speed side gear of the air motor is incorporated into the air motor output shaft for

easier inspection of the motor and gear case inside.

CAUTION The air motor with decelerator and the standard air motor are incompatible, because of difference in the shape of the output shafts in the motors. Later installation of a decelerator to the standard type motor is unacceptable.

6. Installation

WARNING ♦ For all the types (standard motor, motor with brake, decelerator, or brake and decelerator), arbitral

mounting direction and mounting angle of motor are acceptable. However, centering must be correct to prevent deviation from the axis center of a driven object shaft. Otherwise, connections may be damaged due to deviation, causing accidents resulting in injury or death or physical damage.

♦ Breather ports are intended for removal of pressure in an air motor. Be sure to keep them open. Plugging them will lead to increase in internal air pressure, causing lower output or blow-off of the end cover, leading to accidents resulting in injury or death or physical damage.

6-1. Precautions for installation

Service life of this product will be influenced by installation status. Pay attention to the points shown below. (1) Installation location: Ambient temperature should range between –10°C (14°F) and +70°C (158°F).

(The location must be free from freezing.) (2) Mounting direction: Any mounting direction is acceptable for this product. DO NOT apply load not less

than the allowable values shown in the table below to the output shaft. (3) Installation onto shaft: Install couplers (coupling, sprocket, pulley, gear, etc.) onto the output shaft depending

on allowances of the shaft. ◊ Direct connection····· Align with the shaft center of the counterpart machine. Minimize displacement as

small as possible even when couplings are used. ◊ Connection with using chain, V-belt, or gear········· (1) Align with the shaft center of the counterpart machine.

(2) Adjust tension on a chain or V-belt and engagement of gears until they are at right angles to the shaft center. (3) Excessive tension on a chain or V-belt may cause damage to bearings. Extreme slackness of a chain may lead to a great impact force at startup, causing bad influence on the decelerator or counterpart machine. Adjust them appropriately.

(4) Installation method: Securely fix the motor with using supporter brackets or the mounting sections of the main unit so that the air motor or piping is not damaged by vibration.

6-2. Precautions for piping

! WARNING ♦ Ensure that air pressure supply is shut down before provision of pneumatic piping. Otherwise,

accidents resulting in injury or death or physical damage may occur. ♦ Be sure to adjust supply air pressure so that the maximum operating pressure is not more than the

maximum operating pressure. Otherwise, accidents resulting in injury or death or physical damage may occur. <Operating air pressure: From 0.2 MPa to 0.6 MPa>

♦ Breather ports are intended for removal of pressure in an air motor. Be sure to keep them open. Plugging them will lead to increase in internal air pressure, causing lower output or blow-off of the end cover, leading to accidents resulting in injury or death or physical damage.

♦ Install a set of air filter, air regulator, and air lubricator to the air pressure supply port, near the air motor as close as

possible.

♦ DO NOT use pipes of diameter smaller than that of the air pressure supply port (Rc1/4) for pneumatic piping.

♦ After new piping is provided, flush the piping inside before connecting it to the air motor to completely remove

chips and dusts. Otherwise, pneumatic equipment may be malfunctioned.

♦ Be sure to adjust the supply air pressure to the maximum operating pressure, 0.6 MPa, or less.

6

Page 7: OPERATION MANUAL2-1. For secure safety and prevention of dangers ! WARNING Be sure to observe the messages and instructions accompanied with the warning and caution marks included

CAUTION ♦ After operation is finished or at night, shut down supply air pressure, and remove pressure in the

piping. Loss of load with air pressure supplied may cause running of the air motor, leading to accidents resulting in injury or death or physical damage. Users will be responsible for these secondary disasters.

♦ NEVER mix ordinary antifreeze with oil in the air lubricator installed to the air pressure supply port. It may be harmful to humans. Prepare a set of air filter, air regulator, and air lubricator for the air pressure supply port, and supply clean air and lubricating oil. Mount the motor so that the piping distance is as short as possible. Longer distance may give bad influence on performance and durability of the motor.

♦ When air is supplied from the front port (port B), rotating direction of the air motor must be counterclockwise viewed from the output shaft. When it is supplied from the rear port (port A), the motor must be rotated clockwise. Note that rotating directions of motors with decelerator or brake and decelerator depend on reduction ratios. Refer to the catalogue or caution labels attached to products. Wrong identification of rotating direction may cause accidents resulting in injury or death, or physical damage.

♦ Malfunctions of pneumatic equipment are mainly caused by foreign matters, including dusts. Clean the inside of piping with compressed air (not less than 0.2 MPa) before piping, and pay attention to prevent any ingress of chips, strips of tape seal, dusts, or rust into the piping.

♦ Use pipes and pneumatic equipment (air filter, air regulator, air lubricator, directional control valve, etc.) with appropriate diameters for air consumption of air motors. Use of narrow pipes or pneumatic equipment with diameters smaller than those of air motors may lead to excessive pressure loss, causing failure in output or speed required. Pipes with diameters larger than those of ports of air motors by one class are appropriate.

♦ Prepare an air filter or air dryer for the air pressure supply port, and use clean air with dusts and moisture removed.

♦ Install an effective silencer to the exhaust side. ♦ When using the motor at a high speed, the circuit must be constructed so that backpressure is not

increased. ♦ Install an air lubricator to the air pressure supply side, and carry out mist lubrication. Use

JISK2213-Class 1 (additive-free turbine oil ISOVG32) or equivalence as lubricating oil.

7. Running

7-1. Check before running

! CAUTION ♦ Ensure that the product has been installed correctly, and no mounting bolts are slackened.

Running with bolts slackened may lead to injury or damage to surrounding machines. ♦ Check for deviation from the axis center of a driven object. ♦ Ensure that piping is provided so that the motor is rotated in a correct direction. ♦ Make sure that air pressure and air volume can be obtained as scheduled.

♦ Ensure that the air motor is securely fixed.

♦ Make sure that the air regulator is set to the minimum operating pressure.

(Minimum operating pressure: 0.2 MPa)

♦ Ensure that the air lubricator is filled with lubricating oil <JIS K2213-Class 1(additive-free turbine oil ISO

VG32)>.

7

Page 8: OPERATION MANUAL2-1. For secure safety and prevention of dangers ! WARNING Be sure to observe the messages and instructions accompanied with the warning and caution marks included

7-2. Check at test run

CAUTION ♦ Avoid continuous running with no load that will lead to excessive rotation speed, causing bad

influence on parts. Recommended rotation speed range is found by the following formula: rotation speed at the maximum output × (0.2 to 1).

♦ Adjust oil level in the air lubricator appropriately (to two to three drops per minute). ♦ Ensure that the air motor is installed appropriately. ♦ Adjust pressure of the air regulator to the minimum operating pressure, and increase it gradually.

Slowly open the flow-metering valve to increase rotation speed. After making sure that the air motor runs correctly, carry out setup of air pressure and air volume as scheduled.

♦ When performing test run, gradually increase supply air pressure from the minimum operating pressure. After

making sure that the air motor runs correctly, gradually increase it to the pressure as scheduled.

7-3. Check at running

CAUTION ♦ Use this product at rotation speed within the recommended range. Otherwise, rotation speed will

not be stable, or the service life may be shortened. <(0.2 to 1) × rotation speed at the maximum output>

♦ Keeping an air motor stopped with air pressure supplied and load applied is not hazardous. However, keeping this status for a long period or at night without any watcher may lead to running of the motor in case of load fluctuations, causing extreme danger. If the motor needs to be stopped for a long period, use an air motor with brake, or shut down air pressure supply, and remove remaining pressure in the motor and piping.

♦ The maximum operating pressure of the air motor is 0.6 MPa. Rated output shown in the catalogue (theoretical output) can be obtained under 0.5 MPa. Ensure that the operating pressure is secured.

8. Inspection

! WARNING ♦ Inspection must be performed by only persons with a good knowledge and experience. ♦ NEVER inspect during running. Otherwise, accidents resulting in injury or death may occur. ♦ Shut down air pressure supply, and completely remove pressure in an air motor and piping before

inspection. If any pressure remains inside, accidents resulting in injury or death or physical damager may occur.

♦ Keeping an air motor operated without performing inspection may cause malfunction of the motor, damage to surrounding machines, or accidents resulting in injury or death.

♦ Periodically check for slackness of mounting bolts of an air motor. If any slackness is found, retighten the bolts.

♦ We will not be responsible for damage, accidents, or malfunctions caused by noncompliance with the instructions shown above.

8

Page 9: OPERATION MANUAL2-1. For secure safety and prevention of dangers ! WARNING Be sure to observe the messages and instructions accompanied with the warning and caution marks included

! CAUTION ♦ Loss of lubricating oil in the air lubricator installed to the air pressure supply port will lead to faulty

lubrication, causing malfunction. If lubricating oil level is low, regularly add fresh oil. ♦ Use of oils other than JIS K2213-Class 1 (additive-free turbine oil ISO VG32) or equivalence, such

as machine oil and spindle oil, will affect the performance of pneumatic equipment, causing malfunction.

♦ Insufficient lubrication will cause troubles including shorter service life or seizure of a rotary valve, piston, or sleeve. Install the air lubricator near the air motor as close as possible.

♦ Regularly check the air filter, and remove foreign matters causing clogs. ♦ Periodically eject drainage and foreign matters in the air filter of the air pressure supply port.

Ingress of drainage into an air motor will cause washdown of lubricating oil even if the motor is lubricated with the air lubricator, leading to bad influence on performance or malfunction.

♦ Failure or delay in periodic inspection may cause malfunction. The malfunction may lead to accidents resulting in injury or death or physical damage.

8-1. Daily inspection (carry out every two to three days)

♦ When lubricating an air motor, add oil to the air lubricator installed to the air pressure supply port depending on the

running period of the motor.

♦ Periodically remove drainage from the air filter without fail.

♦ Use oil of JIS K2213-Class 1 (additive-free turbine oil ISO VG32) or equivalent for the air lubricator.

Appropriate oil amount to be added is two to three drops per minute.
