About Capture Green

Capture Green Limited offers consultation, design, manufacturing and turnkey

installation of pollution prevention systems. It has also developed a range of

consumable pollution control products.

Capture Green has a number of pollution prevention systems, designed for the

electrical utilities market that are manufactured in house in the UK. “We pride

the electrical utilities sector by professionals from the industry looking for smarter ways

to deal with the persistent challenge of preventing pollutants migrating from

substations and operational depots. Capture Green has worked to develop solutions

in collaboration with its customers and then has scaled these innovations out to the

rest of the market.

Capture Green is engaged with the design, manufacture and installation of large

pollution containment projects. It works as a contractor and supplier to major

construction and utilities companies giving it an excellent insight to the daily site

challenges that are experienced throughout the industry.

This first-hand experience, in-house manufacturing experience and innovative

technology gives Capture Green a significant advantage over the competition, placing

it firmly in amongst the industry to lead with innovation, service and quality products,

that offer a multitude of efficiency savings

SFT WRC-C1 remedial system

The SFT WRC-C1 remedial system is designed to be used as an alternative to traditional oil

water separators. The system relies on a proprietary smart filtration technology that ensures

no hydrocarbon contaminates are able to enter the environment. The system has no

mechanical parts and doesn’t rely on electricity or balancing processes that are commonly

used to separate contaminates. This is important as not all constituents of creosote can be

captured in this manner.

1. The SFT WRC-C1 Water

Remedial Process System

What is it?

Capture Green has developed a remedial system that can be fitted to sites that

potentially risk discharging contaminated surface water into the environment. The SFT

WRC-C1 is for removing hydrocarbons and contaminates typically found in creosote.

The system utilises a number of proprietary filters for removing polluting compounds

found in EU specification creosote, these contaminates include hydrocarbons, phenols

and cresols. The WRC-C1 remedial system allows surface water to be processed at

up to 300 litres per minute whilst removing contaminates to acceptable levels prior to

discharge.

The standard chamber system measures 1670mm (H) x 860mm (W) x 605mm (L). It

has a weir based design within and features a variety of smart filtration media that can

be alternated depending on the pollution challenge.

The system is used to prevent transformer fluid, creosote or other hydrocarbon

pollutants from entering the environment, whilst allowing water to drain unimpeded.

The standard WRC system will allow water to flow at 300 litres per minute retaining up

to 35 litres of hydrocarbon before automatically shutting of all flow from the device.

What does it do?

The SFT WRC-C1 remedial system is designed to be used to capture contaminants

that are found in surface water that is discharged from secondary containment or

drainage systems. The system can be used in place of or to complement existing oil

water separation systems where it is essential to mitigate pollutants from entering the

environment.

The product has a versatile design and is made by Capture Green specifically to

operate and function in industrial site environments. The systems are built to operate

to Class 1 (full retention) oil water separator guidelines. The system is a sealed unit

that can be used in high risk flood areas and can be installed into new or retrofitted to

existing sites.

“Class 1 separators are designed to achieve a discharge concentration of less than 5

mg/litre of oil under standard test conditions. These separators are required for

discharges to surface water drains and the water environment.” (Environment

Agency pollution prevention guidelines PPG3 April 2006)

A full retention separator is used where there is a risk of regular contamination with oil

and a foreseeable risk of significant spillages. The SFT WRC-C1 remedial system has

been designed to treat the full flow that can be delivered by the drainage system. The

‘full flow’ is normally equivalent to the flow generated by a rainfall intensity of

65mm/hour.

The systems utilise hydrocarbon and sediment filters called SFT HRF-80. Capture

Green SFT HRF-80 hydrocarbon and sediment filters have been proven to discharge

water with less than 0.1 ppm of oil concentration. Unlike traditional oil water

separators, the SFT WRC-C1 remediation system also targets emulsified, dilute and

dissolved phased hydrocarbons. Its design also ensuring that it is unaffected by

flooding and flash flooding. Phenols and Creosols (the carcinogenic element of

creosote) are captured within carefully selected activated carbon filters. Finally,

processed water is passed through a biological chamber where enzymes are utilised

to break down dilute contaminates.

As part of the design process for each site Capture Green will need to consider the

flow rates of potential spillages delivered to the separator from the drainage system

and the oil storage requirements of the system.

On larger sites, Capture Green recommends a retention area upstream of the SFT

WRC-C1 remediation system as an acceptable means of limiting flow rate and the size

of the separator needed.

2. Location and labelling

a. Installation

Any clean water should be discharged downstream of the separator. If any clean

water is to be drained through your separator, you will need to consult with Capture

Green, so the additional volume of water can be considered.

If the discharge for the separator is subject to the controls of a permit to discharge

granted by the Environment Agency, a purge valve or chamber will be required

downstream of the separator, to allow an Environment Agency representative to take

samples if required.

Capture Green can design an inspection chamber and lid to protect the SFT WRC-

C1 remedial system. This will give the system safe access points to allow for

inspection and cleaning of the SFT WRC-C1 remedial system. Keep access to the

separator clear at all times and do not use the area for storage.

b. Labelling

Capture Green provide the SFT WRC-C1 remedial system with a visible and durable

label that will be able to be read once the system has been installed. The label

contains the following information:

- Capture Green reference number and year of manufacture

- type of separator

- class of separator

- unique identifier for the design of the separator (name and number)

- nominal size

- oil storage capacity

- volume of separator

- silt storage capacity

- oil level warning device details

- depth of oil storage

- closure device details

Capture Green recommends that the position of the SFT WRC-C1 remedial system

is clearly marked on site drainage plans, it should also be identified on the ground by

a marking on the manhole cover ‘separator’. For all systems installed by Capture

Green, a set of ‘as built’ drawings are submitted on completion of the project.

3. Health and safety

considerations

Pre-Installation considerations

Capture Green supply the SFT WRC-C1 Water Remedial Process System as a

sealed unit that has an inlet and outlet set at predefined locations. Under normal

circumstances The SFT WRC-C1 Water Remedial Process System operates under

gravitational pressures and is therefore installed at either the outfall of an

underground drainage system or as an inline processing unit installed on an existing

drainage system. This means that a number of health and safety risk management

processes need to be considered.

The SFT WRC-C1 Water Remedial Process System is delivered to site band

strapped to a pallet. The system will require mechanical means to remove it from the

transportation vehicle, either by fork lift or with the supplied strops. (DO NOT STROP

FROM THE PERIMETER FLANGE UTILISED FOR FASTENING THE WATER

TIGHT LID). Capture Green provide the SFT WRC-C1 Water Remedial Process

System with a pair of strops located between the base of the system and the top of

the transportation pallet.

Once an undergrounding housing chamber and drainage infrastructure have been

prepared and established The SFT WRC-C1 Water Remedial Process System can

be lifted into position utilising supplied and fitted strops, with pallet removed.

The weight and dimensions of the SFT WRC-C1 Water Remedial Process System

are:

Measurements: 1670mm (H) x 860mm (W) x 605mm (D).

Weight without filters installed: 75 kg

Weight with filters installed: 113.80 kg

Lifting operations should only be undertaken by trained, competent personnel.

PPE requirements pertinent to the lift process should be observed

During servicing and maintenance

The SFT WRC-C1 Water Remedial Process System must be installed within an

inspection chamber this should be considered as confined space and any work

undertaken should be undertaken in conjunction with confined space procedures.

Once the inspection chamber has been accessed the SFT WRC-C1 Water Remedial

Process System should immediately be isolated of fluids (see section ‘isolation of

fluids in and out of system’) this is to prevent potential flooding of the chamber. The

lid of the SFT WRC-C1 Water Remedial Process System is clear to observe the

internal workings of the system. If water in the system is level with the top of the lid,

this could indicate that filters have either isolated an incident or that the system has

been insufficiently maintained. If water in the system is level with the lid, take extra

care when releasing the lid as there could be a potential build-up of contaminates.

Minimise exposure to these contaminates, by wearing suitable personal protective

equipment that should include but is not limited to.

- Chemical resistant safety boot (type EN 13823-3 with EN15090 Part 3)

- Chemical resistant gloves (type PVC/Nitrile EN 388 (3.1.2.1))

- Chemical resistant coveralls. (type EN 14126, EN 1073, EN 1149, EN 14605,

EN 13982, EN 13034)

- Splash resistant chemical resistant goggles (type EN 166 1BT 39 CE)

- Chemical mask (type EN 14387: 2004 ABEK1Hg-P3RD. Half mask: EN140:

1998)

The water tight lid is held in place utilising 53 hex head recess bolts. These should

be removed utilising mechanical means (power ratchet or similar)

Polymers utilised within the SFT WRC-C1 remedial system increase the flash point

of flammable liquids thus reducing the chance of ignition. Capture Green still advise

the slow release of the sealed lid, with a gas monitor kept close with the chamber

during the removal of the lid.

Once all bolts have been removed, the lid of the system should be lifted from the

chamber. The lid stats are

The size and weight of the lid make the removal a two-person manual lift process

All consumable filtration products (identified within the routine servicing and

maintenance schedule) should be carefully removed and placed in hazardous waste

bags. These should be sealed and disposed of in accordance with hazardous waste

procedures.

Polymer and activated carbon filters when saturated could weigh up to 20Kgs and

could therefore pose a manual handling risk. Care should be taken when removing

and reinstalling both polymer and activated carbon filters.

The system should be cleaned and contaminated water discharged from the system

utilising a Green Rhino Dewatering Pack. It is essential that contaminates are

contained during this process.

outlined within this section

5. Isolation of fluids in and out

of the system

When entering an inspection chamber where a SFT WRC-C1 Water Remedial

Process System is installed, it is important that the flow of fluids into the system are

isolated. This is to ensure that liquids are unable to enter the system (to ease the

service and maintenance process). The system is also isolated to minimise the

possible chances of flooding, entrapment or even drowning whilst an operative(s)

is/are working in or around the underground chamber.

6. Installation requirements Most SFT WRC-C1 Water Remedial Process Systems designs are bespoke, as

each site generally requires a slightly different input/output configuration. It is highly

recommended that the installation of the SFT WRC-C1 Water Remedial Process

System should be carried out under the direct supervision of Capture Green or under

remote guidance (Capture Green also offers a full turn-key installation service).

Failure to carry out the installation of the SFT WRC-C1 Water Remedial Process

System in accordance with Capture Green recommendations could invalidate the

product warranty and could increase the risk of an environmental incident on site.

When prescribing or designing a SFT WRC-C1 Water Remedial Process System,

Capture Green needs to gain a thorough understanding of:

- The size of the containment area that the system is to service

- The type of contaminates likely to arising within the containment area

- The quantity of contaminates likely to arise with the containment area

- Location of the system and desired fit within the existing or new infrastructure

- Inspection housing and lid (proposed traffic will have impact on that chosen)

- Service and maintenance SLA requirements

Failure to disclose all of the relevant information can impact Capture Greens ability

to help prescribe the most appropriate Smart Filtration Product (SFT).

a. Location

The WRC-C1 must be installed below ground (if reliant on gravity) and as close as

possible to a source of surface water run-off. Make sure that the chosen location is

easily accessed for installation, service and maintenance.

b. Preparing the chamber for the WRC-C1

Capture Green recommends utilising a composite interlocking chamber due to the

ease of use and time to install. These are selected depending on the location of the

systems being installed. Equally traditional concrete chambers can be constructed.

When the separator location has been determined, the area should be excavated to

a width to provide side clearance and correct depth for the base slab. Internal

measurements should be no less than 2500mm x 1500mm.

c. Preparing the Ground

A concrete slab with a 300mm sump

needs to be formed. The specification for

the concrete needs to be appropriate to

contain the weight of the WRC-C1 with a

full liquid capacity.

d. Pipe Connections

Prior consideration to drainage point is important. The WRC can be fitted to an in-

line drainage system or to a drainage system where an outlet is variable. This will

need to be defined at the design phase and before the WRC is manufactured by

Capture Green. Standard 110mm drainage pipe is used by Capture Green to create

inlet and outlet configurations accordingly

e. Installing the WRC-C1

The SFT WRC-C1 Water Remedial Process System is delivered to site band

strapped to a pallet. The system will require mechanical means to remove it from the

transportation vehicle, either by fork lift or with the supplied strops. (DO NOT STROP

FROM THE PERIMETER FLANGE UTILISED FOR FASTENING THE WATER

TIGHT LID). Capture Green provide the SFT WRC-C1 Water Remedial Process

System with a pair of strops located between the base of the system and the top of

the transportation pallet. Once the chamber is fully prepared, lower the WRC-C1 into

the chamber taking consideration to pipe connection locations.

7. Routine servicing and

maintenance Capture Green supply a 12-month warranty on a SFT WRC-C1 Water Remedial

Process System, that is activated on a signed receipt of goods. The 12-month

system warranty can be extended under certain circumstances, for example if a

service level agreement (SLA) is taken out with Capture Green for servicing and

maintenance.

To prevent pollution and minimise your costs, you need to manage your separator

effectively. To make this easy, all parts of the separator that have to be regularly

maintained have been made easily accessible.

Every six months, experienced personnel should:

- Physically inspect the integrity of the system

- Assess the levels of accumulated oils and silts in the primary chambers

- Service all electrical equipment such as telemetry equipment (if fitted)

- Check the condition and flow of polymer and activated carbon filters

Some heavily used or high-risk sites might require more frequent inspections

8. Introduction to oil water

separation

How do oil separators work?

Oil separators can be fitted to surface water drainage systems to protect the

environment from pollution by oils. They separate the oil from the water, and then

retain the oil safely until it is removed. They are installed to contain oil leaks from

stored oil, oil filled equipment, oil impregnated timbers, vehicles, plant and accidental

spillages. To be effective, oil separators need to be correctly designed, installed and

maintained.

Where are separators needed?

Surface water may be contaminated by oil at a number of different sites. These sites

need to have measures in place to prevent this oil from polluting the environment.

These sites include:

- electrical utility sites where oil filled equipment is utilised

- rail networks where oil filled equipment is utilised

- storage areas for oil impregnated timber

- car parks typically larger than 800m2 in area or for 50 or more car parking

spaces

- smaller car parks discharging to a sensitive environment

- areas where goods vehicles are parked or manoeuvred

- vehicle maintenance areas

- roads

- industrial sites where oil is stored or used

- refuelling facilities

any other site with a risk of oil contamination

9. The Capture Green water

remediation process

Capture Green utilise a number pioneering processes within its WRC-C1 to remove pollutants from contaminated

surface water to within regulatory levels, before discharging. The process starts by removing debris and

suspended solids from contaminate, it then removes hydrocarbons to non-detectable levels via a process call

solidification. The WRC-C1 then targets contaminates that dissolve into water within carefully selected activated

carbons and an enzyme rich biological chamber. See the WRC-C1 side and plan detail below

10. Summary

Electricity distribution network operators and telecoms companies utilise high volumes of creosote impregnated

distribution poles during day‐to‐day operations. Distribution poles are installed during planned capital works

programs, repair and maintenance, and emergency works. The high volume of planned and reactive installations

means that companies need to store creosote impregnated timber distribution poles at strategic geographical

locations across their networks.

Capture Green can offer a fully installed containment system capable of storing a specified number and type of

distribution pole. The Capture Green Pole Storage Containment System includes a facility to remediate storm

water of hydrocarbons and compounds typically found in creosote before allowing accumulating water to flow

from a pre-formed retention area. The Capture Green WRC-C1 has the capacity to shut down preventing a

containment area from discharging. This process occurs when the filters become overwhelmed or overloaded

and where there is a risk of hydrocarbons entering the environment. The system has been designed to process

accumulating contaminates on a residual level and under normal conditions the filters should operate efficiently

for between 18 and 24 months. *

A 6-month inspection is required after the commissioning date of any Capture Green Remedial Chamber in line

with Environment Agency PPG3 guidelines.

The completed installation will provide compliant storage of creosote impregnated timber on site in line with

Environment Agency PPG5 guidelines. The system will also ensure that Capture Green clients meet ISO14001

audit criteria for the compliant storage of creosote impregnated timber.
