Background

In the context of the UN Sustainable Development Summit 2015 and the Opening of the 70th Session of the UN General Assembly, the high-level event will bring together African leaders, heads of relevant UN organizations, other senior offi cials and key development actors to discuss concrete partnerships for the eff ective operationalization of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development in Africa, particularly as related to Goal 9 on “resilient infrastructure, inclusive and sustainable industrialization and innovation”.

Fast growth in Africa over the past decade has not translated into the kind of socio-economic transformation the continent needs to make poverty reduction irreversible. Most recent African development plans (e.g. the Common African Position, the Agenda 2063, SADC Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan, COMESA Medium Term Strategic Plan) therefore highlight the need to scale up the process of industrialization in Africa.

As a way to eff ectively implement the 2030 agenda in support of Africa’s industrialization, new partnerships and implementation models are required. UNIDO’s Programme for Country Partnership (PCP), which is currently piloted in Ethiopia and Senegal, addresses current challenges, including the need for enhanced cooperation and coordination, and thus presents an eff ective and effi cient partnership model for operationalizing Goal 9.

Objective

The high-level event will rally the political support of and commitment from key stakeholders for Africa’s development priorities in the area of inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID). Participants will also discuss how to forge stronger regional, inter-regional and global cooperation for inclusive and sustainable industrial development and make recommendations for appropriate mechanisms to facilitate such cooperation, including through South-South cooperation and new partnership models.

The event is co-organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the African Union Commission (AUC), the Offi ce of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA), and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).
