SAFETY RULESATTENTION! BECOME ALERT! YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED!

Safety is a primary concern in the design andmanufacture of our products. Unfortunately, ourefforts to provide safe equipment can be wipedout by an operator’s single careless act.

In addition to the design and configuration ofequipment, hazard control and accident preven-tion are dependent upon the awareness, con-cern, judgement, and proper training of personnelinvolved in the operation, transport, maintenanceand storage of equipment.

It has been said “The best safety device is aninformed, careful operator.” We ask you to be thatkind of operator.

TRAININGJ Safety instructions are important! Read all at-tachment and power unit manuals; follow all safetyrules and safety decal information. (Replacementmanuals are available from dealer or, in the UnitedStates and Canada, call 1-800-319-6637.) Failure tofollow instructions or safety rules can result inserious injury or death.

J If you do not understand any part of thismanual and need assistance, see your dealer.

J Operators must be instructed in and be capa-ble of the safe operation of the equipment, itsattachments and all controls. Do not allow anyoneto operate this equipment without proper instruc-tions.

J Never allow children or untrained persons tooperate equipment.

PREPARATIONJ Check that all hardware is properly installed.Always tighten to torque chart specificationsunless instructed otherwise in this manual.

J Always wear relatively tight and belted cloth-ing to avoid entanglement in moving parts. Wearsturdy, rough-soled work shoes and protectiveequipment for eyes, hair, hands, hearing and head.

J Make sure implement is properly attached, ad-justed and in good operating condition.

J Power unit must be equipped with ROPS orROPS CAB and seat belt. Keep seat belt securelyfastened. Falling off power unit can result in deathfrom being run over or crushed. Keep foldableROPS systems in “locked up” position at all times.

J Make sure all safety decals are installed.Replace if damaged. (See Safety Decals section forlocation.)J Make sure shields and guards are properlyinstalled and in good condition. Replace if dam-aged.J A minimum 20% of tractor and equipment weightmust be on tractor front wheels with attachments intransport position. Without this weight, tractor couldtip over causing personal injury or death. The weightmay be attained with a loader, front wheel weights, ballast in tires or front tractor weights. Weigh thetractor and equipment. Do not estimate.

OPERATIONAL SAFETYJ Keep bystanders away from equipment.J Do not operate equipment while under theinfluence of alcohol or drugs.J Operate only in daylight or good artificial light.J Keep hands, feet, hair and clothing away fromequipment while engine is running. Stay clear of allmoving parts.J Always comply with all state and local lightingand marking requirements.J Never allow riders on power unit or attach-ment.J Power unit must be equipped with ROPS orROPS CAB and seat belt. Keep seat belt securelyfastened. Falling off power unit can result in deathfrom being run over or crushed. Keep foldableROPS systems in “locked up” position at all times.J Always sit in tractor seat when operatingcontrols or starting engine. Securely fasten seatbelt, place transmission in neutral, engage brakeand ensure all other controls are disengagedbefore starting tractor engine.J Look down and to the rear and make sure area isclear before operating in reverse.J Use extreme care when working close tofences, ditches, other obstructions, or on hill-sides.J Before dismounting tractor or performing anyservice or maintenance, disengage power to imple-ment, lower the 3-point hitch and all raisedcomponents to the ground, operate valve levers torelease any hydraulic pressure, set parking brake, stop engine, remove key, and unfasten seat belt.

OPERATION

Safety is a primary concern in the design andmanufacture of our products. Unfortunately, ourefforts to provide safe equipment can be wipedout by an operator’s single careless act.

In addition to the design and configuration ofequipment, hazard control and accident preven-tion are dependent upon the awareness, con-cern, judgement, and proper training of personnelinvolved in the operation, transport, maintenanceand storage of equipment.

It has been said “The best safety device is aninformed, careful operator.” We ask you to be thatkind of operator.

The designed and tested safety of this machinedepends on it being operated within the limitations asexplained in this manual. Be familiar with and followall safety rules in the manual, on the renovator and onthe tractor.

The safe operation of this renovator is the responsibil-ity of the operator, who must be properly trained. Theoperator should be familiar with the equipment and allsafety practices before starting operation. Read theSafety Rules and Safety Decals on pages 4 through 6.

The Turf Renovator (Model TR72) is an excellent turfreconditioning tool that penetrates the ground in orderto promote turf root health by allowing water, air andsunlight to enter the root system. With the availableseedbox, the Turf Renovator (Model TR72S) be-comes a useful tool for overseeding applications.

The Super Turf Renovator (Models STR48S, STR60Sand STR72S) is also an excellent turf reconditioningtool that penetrates the ground in order to promoteturf root health by allowing water, air and sunlight toenter the root system. The front rollers can be angled(crabbed) to promote a more aggressive tearingaction of the turf.

The Core Aerator (Models PL48, PL60 and PL72) isdesigned to lower the soil compaction of turf areas byremoving plugs of soil. The holes eventually fill in withthe surrounding soil, making for a less compactenvironment for the turf root system.

Recommended tractor ground speed is from 2 to 5mph.

WARNINGJ Never allow children or untrained persons tooperate equipment.

J Power unit must be equipped with ROPS orROPS CAB and seat belt. Keep seat belt securelyfastened. Falling off power unit can result in deathfrom being run over or crushed. Keep foldableROPS systems in “locked up” position at all times.

WARNINGJ Keep bystanders away from equipment.J Keep all persons away from operator controlarea while performing adjustments, service ormaintenance.J Never go underneath equipment lowered to theground or raised. Never place any part of the bodyunderneath equipment or between moveable partseven when the engine has been turned off.Hydraulic system leak down, hydraulic systemfailures, mechanical failures or movement ofcontrol levers can cause equipment to drop orrotate unexpectedly and cause severe injury ordeath.

D Service work does not require going under-neath.D Read operator’s manual for service instruc-tions or have done by a qualified dealer.

J Keep hands, feet, hair and clothing away fromequipment while engine is running. Stay clear of allmoving parts.

CAUTIONJ Always wear relatively tight and belted cloth-ing to avoid entanglement in moving parts. Wearsturdy, rough-soled work shoes and protectiveequipment for eyes, hair, hands, hearing and head.J Stop tractor and implement immediately uponstriking an obstruction. Turn off engine, removekey, inspect and repair any damage before resum-ing operation.

TURF RENOVATOR ROLLEROPERATION -- TR72SThe front roller on the Turf Renovator is non-angling.When operated, the large front roller pins penetrateand loosen the soil prior to seeding or overseeding. The rear roller’s function is to firm and press the soilkicked up by the front roller into a uniform seedbed withthe loose soil needed to insure proper seed germina-tion. The spring tension on the rear roller can beadjusted to deliver the desired down pressure and rolleraction to achieve the desired seedbed appearance. For best results, the Turf Renovator should beadjusted level front to back so that the front and rearrollers work together. Fore and aft adjustment iscontrolled by adjusting the tractor’s top link length. In extremely compacted soil conditions, additionalweight should be added to the Turf Renovator to helpthe roller pins penetrate the soil sufficiently. When the situation permits, making a second pass90° to the first is an effective way for the roller pins topenetrate areas where uneven soil conditions exist.

SUPER TURF RENOVATOR ROLLEROPERATION -- STR48S, STR60S &STR72S (Figure 1 & Figure 2)The front roller on the Super Turf Renovator can beangled (crabbed) to a desired position. When therenovator is pulled in a straight forward position, thelarge front pins will penetrate the soil in a straightpushing action and little disturbance is caused to theturf. The penetration of the soil provides a means forair, sunlight and water to get to the turf root system. The more the angle (crab), the more tearing action isapplied by the front roller pins. For severe turfconditions, a maximum crab position may be desired.

The rear roller’s function is to firm and press soil kickedup by the front roller into a uniform seedbed with theloose soil needed to insure proper seed germination. The spring tension on the rear roller can be adjusted todeliver the desired down pressure and roller action toachieve the desired seedbed appearance.

For best results, the Super Turf Renovator should beadjusted level front to back so that the front and rearrollers work together. Fore and aft adjustment iscontrolled by adjusting the tractor’s top link length.

In extremely compacted soil conditions, additionalweight should be added to the Super Turf Renovatorto help the roller pins penetrate the turf and soilsufficiently.

When the situation permits, making a second pass90° to the first is an effective way for the roller pins topenetrate areas where uneven soil conditions exist.

CORE AERATOR OPERATIONThe Core Aerator is designed to reduce the soilcompaction of an established turf area. The case-hardened spoons attached to the reels penetrate andremove a 3/4 x 4” plug from the soil. Up to 1000 lbs. ofadditional weight can be added to the frame to ensurethe proper penetration by the spoons.

TRACTOR ATTACHMENT(Figure 3 & Figure 4)

The Turf Renovator, Super Turf Renovator and the CoreAerator are designed for use on Category I, 3-pointtractors with a minimum lift capacity of 500 lbs. Attachthe tractor’s lower lift arms to the renovator and securewith mounting pins (24) and lynch pins (25).

a different hole to assist in the movement of the frontrollers. Once the front rollers are positioned asdesired, reinstall the locking mechanism into theappropriate hole and secure with the safety pinpreviously removed.

With the renovator attached, it is important to checkthe front end stability of the tractor before placing theequipment into service.

WARNINGJ A minimum 20% of tractor and equipment weightmust be on tractor front wheels with attachments intransport position. Without this weight, tractor couldtip over causing personal injury or death. The weightmay be attained with a loader, front wheel weights, ballast in tires or front tractor weights. Weigh thetractor and equipment. Do not estimate.

PRE-OPERATION CHECK LIST(OWNER’S RESPONSIBILITY)

SEEDING OPERATION -- TR72S,STR48S, STR60S & STR72S

Tractor speed and seed flow settings are critical forproper seed population. Check the seed control chart,Figure 8, on the inside of the seedbox lid and adjustthe flow control lever, Figure 7, as needed for theseed being used and the population desired.

SEED FLOWCONTROL LEVER

CM632

Figure 7. Seed Flow Control Lever

Tractor speed (normally 2--5 mph) should be estab-lished to where uniform seed incorporation occurswith the action of the rollers.

The seedbox has a seed control and distribution charton the inside of the lid. The chart is based on a 1:1chain drive ratio. Any adjustments to this ratio will re-sult in a change to the flow rate as described in thechart.

Before seeding an area, check the attitude of theseeder and adjust the top link so that the front andrear rollers are level. Adjust the 3-point lower lift stopso that the roller spikes penetrate the ground at 3/4”,or enough to remove the tracks left by the tractor tires.

For new seeding, the soil should be first prepared andleveled with the renovator so that the proper seedbedis created. Use of other equipment may create anirregular seedbed. When the renovator’s rollers hit thesoil unevenly, soil compression is irregular. Thiscauses the seeds to be placed in low spots andirregular germination may be experienced.

OPERATING TIPS

Do not allow a buildup of dirt on the roller sprockets.Clean sprockets and chain as needed. Excessivebuildup of material can cause damage to the rollerand idler shafts.

Always run the drive chain with some slack in the chain. An extremely tight chain can damage the roller shaft, the roller bearings, and the idler shaft and bearing.
