10.USE PROPER EXTENSION
CORDS. Make sure your extensioncord is in good condition. Whenusing an extension cord, be sure touse one heavy enough to carry thecurrent your product will draw. Anundersized cord will result in a dropin line voltage and in loss of powerwhich will cause thetool to overheat.
The table on page 11 shows thecorrect size to use depending oncord length and nameplate ampererating. If in doubt, use the nextheavier gauge. The smaller thegauge number, the heavier the cord.
11 .WEAR PROPER APPAREL. Do
not wear loose clothing, gloves,
neckties, rings, bracelets or otherjewelry which may get caught inmoving parts. Nonslip footwear isrecommended. Wear protective haircovering to contain long hair.
12.ALWAYSWEAREYE
PROTECTION. Any powertool can throw foreignobjects into the eyes andcould cause permanent
eye damage. ALWAYS wear SafetyGoggles (not glasses) that complywith ANSI Safety standard Z87.1.Everyday eyeglasses have only
impact-resistant lenses: TheyARE NOT safety glasses,SafetyGoggles are available at Sears.
NOTE: Glasses or goggles not incompliance with ANSI Z87.1 could
seriously injure you when they break.
13.WEAR A FACE MASKOR DUST

KEEP HANDS out of the path of thesaw blade. If the workpiece you arecutting would cause your hands tobe within 7-1/2 in. of the saw blade,
the workpiece should be clamped inplace before making the cut.
MAKE SURE the blade is sharp,runs freely and is free of vibration.

cracks or damage before operation.
Replace a cracked or damagedblade immediately.
15.NEVER use blades recommended
for operation at less than 4800 rpm.
16.ALWAYS keep the blade guards inplace and use at all times.
17.NEVER reach around the sawblade.
18.MAKE SURE the blade is not in
contact with the workpiece beforethe switch is turned ON.

MOTOR SAFETY PROTECTIONIMPORTANTTo avoid motor damage, the motorshould be blown out or vacuumedfrequently to keep sawdust frominterfering with the motor ventilation.1. Connect this saw to a 120 V circuit.
This circuit must not be less than a#14 wire with a 15 A time lag fuse.NOTE: When using an extensioncord on a circuit with a #14 wire, theextension cord must not exceed 25feet in length.
2. If the motor will not start, releasethe trigger switch immediately.UNPLUG THE SAW. Check the sawblade to make sure it turns freely. Ifthe blade is free, try to start the sawagain. If the motor still does not start,refer to the TROUBLESHOOTINGGUIDE.
3. If the t0ol suddenly stalls whilecutting wood, release the triggerswitch, unplug the tool and freethe blade from the wood. The sawmaynow be started and the cutfinished.

4. FUSES may "blow" or circuitbreakers may trip frequently if:a. MOTOR is overloaded -
overloading can occur if you feedtoo rapidly or make too manystart/stops in a short time.
b. LINE VOLTAGE is morethan 10% above or below thenameplate voltage rating. Forheaw loads, the voltage at motor
_ terminals must equal the voltagespecified on the nameplate.
C. IMPROPER or dull saw bladesare used.
5. Most motor troubles may be tracedto loose or incorrect connections,overload, !oWvoltage or inadequatepower supplywiring. Always checkthe connections, the load andsupply circuit if the motor doesn'trun well. Check minimum gauge forthe length of cord you are using onthe chart below.
GUIDELINES FOR EXTENSIONCORDSUse a proper extension cord. Makesure your extension cord is in goodcondition. When using an extensioncord, be sure to use one heavy enoughto carry the current your product willdraw. An undersized cord will causea drop in line voltage, resulting inloss of power and overheating. Thetable below shows the correct sizeto use depending on cord length andnameplate ampere rating. If in doubt,use the next heavier gauge. Thesmaller the gauge number, the heavierthe cord.Be sure your extension cord isproperly wired and in good condition.Always replace a damaged extensioncord or have it repaired by a qualifiedperson before using it. Protect yourextension cords from sharp objects,excessive heat and damp or wet areas.
Use a separate electrical circuitfor your tools. This circuit must notbe less than a #14 wire with a 15 Atime lag fuse. NOTE: When usingan extension cord on a circuit witha #14 wire, the extension cord mustnot exceed 25 feet in length. Beforeconnecting the tool to the power line,make sure the switch is in the OFFposition and the electric current israted the same as the current stampedon the motor nameplate, running at alower voltage will damage the motor.

UNPACKING YOUR MITER SAW
[_WARNINGTo avoid injury from unexpectedstarting or electrical shock, do notplug the power cord into a sourceof power during unpacking andassembly. This cord must remainunplugged whenever you areworking on the saw.
1. Remove the miter saw from thecarton.IMPORTANT: Do not lift miter sawby the trigger switch handle. Itmay cause misalignment. Only liftmachine by the base hand holds.
2. Place the saw on a securestationary work surface.
. Separate all parts from the packingmaterial. Check each one withthe illustration to make certain allitems are accounted for, beforediscarding any packing material.

POSITIVE STOP LOCKING LEVER -Locks the miter saw at a preset positivestop for the desired miter angle.
SWITCH HANDLE -The switchhandle contains the trigger switch andthe laser on/off switch. The blade islowered into the workpiece by pushingdown on the handle. The saw willreturn to its upright position when thehandle is released.
WARNING LABELS - Read andunderstand for your own safety. Makesure all labels are present on machineand legible.
WRENCH STORAGE - Convenientstorage to prevent misplacing the bladewrench.
WOODWORKING TERMS
ARBOR - The shaft on which a bladeis mounted.
BEVEL CUT - An angle cut madethrough the face of the workpiece.
COMPOUND CUT - An angled cutto both the edge and face of a board,most common use is with crownmolding.
CROSS CUT - A cut which runs acrossthe board perpendicular to the grain.
KICKBACK- Sudden and unintendedmovement of the tool or workpiece. It istypically caused by binding or pinchingof the workpiece
MITER CUT - A miter is a type of jointwhere the two parts to be joined are cutat an angle, and typically the finishedjoint forms a 90-degree angle. Alsocommonly spelled "mitre".
REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE (RPM)- The number of turns completed by aspinning object in one minute.
SAW BLADE PATH - The area of theworkpiece or table top directly in linewith the travel of the blade or the partof the workpiece which will be cut.
SET - The distance between two saw• t
blade tips, bent outward In oppositedirections to each other. The furtherapart the tips are, the greater the set.
THIN-KERF BLADE - Thinner thannormal blades, remove less material,smaller kerfs (between .065 in. and.070 in.). Blade thinness also mayincrease the heat generated whilecutting.
WORKPIECE - The wood beingcut. The surfaces of a workpiece arecommonly referred to as faces, endsand edges.
FREEHAND - Performing a cut withoutusing a fence (guide), hold down orother proper device to prevent theworkpiece from twisting during thecutting operation.
HEEL - Misalignment of the blade.
KERF - The width of a saw cut,determined by the thickness and set ofthe blade.

INSTALLING THE MITER HANDLE(FIG. A)1. Thread the miter handle (1) into the
hole located at the front of the mitertable.

UNLOCKING THE SLIDE CARRIAGE(FIG. B)The slide carriage lock knob (1) islocated on the right side of the slidecarriage. Loosen the slide carriage lockknob (1) to unlock the slide carriage.When transporting or storing the mitersaw, the slide carriage should alwaysbe locked in position.
SAW BLADE WRENCH (FIG. C)1. For convenient storage and
prevention of loss, there is a slot (1)in the rear of the carrying handle(2) for storing the blade wrench (3)when not in use.

To avoid injury and damage to thesaw, transport and store the mitersaw with the cutting head lockedin the down position. Never usethe stop latch to hold the cuttinghead in a down position for cuttingoperations.
[AWARNING1When using stop block on the rightside, hold-down clamp must also bein right side. Using hold-down clampon the left side during this operationcan cause kickback and seriousinjury to the operator.

Mounting instructions1. For stationary use, place the saw

4. Tilt the cutting arm to back to theright at 90° bevel and recheck foralignment.
5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 if furtheradjustment is needed.
2. Using a combination square, checkto see if the blade angle is 45° to thetable.

AUXILIARY WOOD FENCE (FIG. FF)When making multiple or repetitive cutsthat result in cut-off pieces of one inchor less, it is possible for the saw bladeto catch the cut-off piece and throw itout of the saw or into the blade guardand housing, possibly causing damageor injury. To minimize this, an auxiliarywood fence can be mounted to yoursaw.
Holes are provided in the saw fenceto attach an auxiliary wood fence. Thisfence is to be constructed of straightwood approximately 3/4 in. thick by2-1/2 in. high by 18 in. long.
Attach the wood fence securely andmake a full depth cut to make a bladeslot.
Check for interference between thewood fence and the lower blade guard.Adjust if necessary.
NOTE: This auxiliary fence is usedonly with the saw blade in the 0° bevelposition (90° to the table). The auxiliarywood fence must be removed whenbevel cutting.

CUTTING BASE MOLDING (FIG. GG)Base moldings and many othermoldings can be cut on a compoundmiter saw. The setup of the sawdepends on molding characteristicsand applications, as shown. Performpractice cuts on scrap material. Toachieve best results:
NOTE: Always perform a dry run cutso you can determine if the operationbeing attempted is possible beforepower is applied to the saw.
CUTTING CROWN MOLDING(FIG. HH, II)Your compound miter saw is suitedfor the difficult task of cutting crownmolding. To fit properly, crown moldingmust be compound-mitered withextreme accuracy. The two surfaceson a piece of crown molding that fitflat against the ceiling and wall are atangles that, when added together,equal exactly 90°.
Most crown molding has a top rearangle (the section that fits flat againstthe ceiling) of 52° and a bottom rearangle (the section that fits flat againstthe wall) of 38°.
When setting the bevel and miterangles for compound miters, rememberthat the settings are interdependent -changing one changes the other, aswell.

® For your safety, this saw is doubleinsulated. To avoid electricalshock, fire or injury, use onlyparts identical to those identifiedin the parts list. Reassembleexactly as the original assemblyto avoid electrical shock.
REPLACING CARBON BRUSHES(FIG. JJ)Replace both carbon brushes wheneither has less than 1/4 in. length ofcarbon remaining, or if the spring orwire is damaged or burned. To inspector replace brushes, first unplug thesaw. Then remove the black plasticcap (1) on the side of the motor (2).Carefully remove the spring-loadedcap. Then pull out the brush andreplace. Replace for the other side. Toreassemble, reverse the procedure.The ears on the metal end of theassembly go in the same hole thecarbon part fits into. Tighten the capsnugly, but do not overtighten.
NOTE: When reinstalling the samebrushes, put them back in the way theycame out. This will avoid a break-inperiod that reduces motor performanceand increases wear.

LOWER BLADE GUARDDo not use the saw without the lowerblade guard. The lower blade guard isattached to the saw for your protection.Should the lower guard becomedamaged, do not use the saw until thedamaged guard has been replaced.Check regularly to make sure the lowerguard is working properly. Clean thelower guard of any dust or buildup witha damp cloth.
_WARNING I
® Do not use solvents on the guard.They could make the plastic"cloudy" and brittle.
® When cleaning the lower guard,unplug the saw from the powersource receptacle to avoidunexpected start-up.
SAWDUSTPeriodically, sawdust will accumulateunder the worktable and base. Thiscould cause difficulty in the movementof the worktable when setting upa miter cut. Frequently blow out orvacuum up the sawdust.
_WARNING]When removing sawdust, wearproper eye protection to keep debrisfrom blowing into eyes.
LUBRICATION(FIG.KK)All the motorbearingsin this toolarelubricatedwitha sufficientamountofhigh-gradelubricantfor the lifeof theunitundernormaloperatingconditions;therefore, no further lubrication isrequired.
Lubricatethefollowingasnecessary:
Choppivot: Apply light machine oil topoints indicated in illustration.
Central pivot of plastic guard: Uselight household oil (sewing machineoil) on metal-to-metal or metal-to-plastic guard contact areas as requiredfor smooth, quiet operation. Avoidexcessive oil, to which sawdust willcling.
Link: (which actuates the lower guardmovement) may be oiled at the rearpivot, greased at ball bearing contact,and oiled where the link actuates theacetyl roller of the lower guard, if thedown chop motion is hard to start.
