Opportunities Within Our Churches A Word from the Executive Director of Mis- by Dr. Mitch Martin, Executive Director of Missions Our Annual Celebration is Monday, October 24, at Bartlett Hills Baptist Church. It’s going to be a fun night with food trucks, childcare, testimonies, music and a dessert fellowship. Also, we will receive the first-annual Jack May Offering. Our new mission offering named after Jack May will fund local mission causes. This year the offering will go for Great Commission Multipliers. (See inside front cover for more information.) The International Mission Board has sent home approximately 800 missionaries. There are a number of former foreign missionaries living here in the Mid-South. Since America is rapidly becoming a secular mission field, we want to learn from these missionaries. The Jack May Offering will help these Great Commission Multipliers with a small stipend so they can go into our churches mentoring us how to more effectively reach our nation for Christ. So in conclusion, watch for the Jack May Offering mailout. It will contain posters, bulletin inserts and offering envelopes. Second, prayerfully consider how a missionary or one of our homegrown leaders might help your church. And finally, join us on October 24, for our Annual Celebration. Focus on Church Starting

Art GroomesChurch Starting Specialist

Church Planting and PrayerIn the opening chapter of the book of Acts, Jesus reminds His followers of the promised Holy Spirit who would empower them to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth. After Jesus’ ascension, they returned to Jerusalem and were continually united in prayer. As a result of prayer, God’s presence and power were released. Church planters need our prayers as they strive to start new churches. Without the presence and power of God upon their lives, they will not be able to bear eternal fruit. Let me encourage you to pray and engage your congregation to pray for Mid-South Baptist Association church planters. Pray for them to experience God’s presence and power in order to be salt and light that penetrates a lost and dying world with the gospel of salvation. James reminds us that, “The urgent request of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect.” (James 5:16 HCSB). (See Church Planter Spotlight on Mac King.)

True Fellowship Baptist Church is in the process of starting a tutoring program for students in the grades KK-5. They are looking for tutors to volunteer one hour a week to help students in Reading and Math starting in October. Call Tammy Scott at 901-832-3301 if you can help.

Ministry Opportunities

2016 Goal:$50,000

Dr. Jack May was born on September 20, 1929 – the oldest of 11 children. After graduating high school and serving in the U.S. Army, he married Erlene Broom. Bro. Jack went on to graduate from Millsaps College and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Union University honored him with a Doctor of Divinity degree in 1986. Bro. Jack also served as President of the Tennessee Baptist Convention. Countless people have come to know the Lord through the ministry of Jack and Erlene May. In 1993, after pastoring Speedway Terrace, Broadmoor and Whitten Memorial Baptist Churches, Bro. Jack retired for the first time. In 1997, after pastoring Colonial Baptist Church, he retired for the second time. In 2005, after serving as interim pastor at Broadmoor and Ellendale and pastor at Ridgeway Baptist Church, Bro. Jack retired for the third time. He was honored in 2008 by Ridgeway Baptist Church as Pastor Emeritus. Jack and Erlene May are dearly loved by all who know them but especially their family. The Mays have a son and daughter and four grandchildren.

2016 Offering HighlightsEach year, the Jack May Offering will highlight a different area of ministry of the Mid-South Baptist Association. This year, the focus will be on Great Commission Multipliers. The offering will be used for instructors and materials to ensure no financial burden for the church. The vision is to see multiple clusters of reproducing disciple makers.

Participants will experience hands-on learning through seven topics found in Acts 11. These Seven Metrics of a Healthy Church consist of: Prayer Leadership Missions Ministry Discipleship Stewardship Evangelism

These areas of study have been identified because they are biblical and all of them are essential for either church starting or church strengthening. Each of the metrics will be led by a proven practitioner. God has sovereignly placed former missionaries here for a season and a reason. IMB missionaries have a wealth of experience ready to bless the Mid-South Baptist Association. We in turn can bless them with a stipend, meaningful ministry and exposure to MSBA churches.

The core values for these studies include:• Process Oriented – mentoring, modeling, coaching, practicing• Relational – informal but intentional transparency• Obedience Driven – accountability and high expectations• Reproducing – immediately begin investing in others• Narrow – focused on a few effective people• Contextual – takes place in local churches and/or homes

Individuals will begin living in a daily listening and obeying relationship with Jesus. People will get off the pew as spectators and into active, personal ministry. The unlimited potential of lay people to make disciples will be multiplied. Participants will experience the difference between learning content and obeying Biblical truths.

America is the third largest mission field in the world and is becoming increasingly secular. It’s time for Great Commission Multipliers to rise up in the church.
