Specifying optics – You can't always get what you want… how to get what you need

S. Riese

Layertec GmbH, Mellingen, Germany

Requirements for high-performance optics have steadily increased in the past and will continue to do so.

On the one hand, coatings for ultrafast optics or high-power laser mirrors require extensive optimization

with respect to dispersion control, electric field distribution, etc., resulting in challenges with respect to

deposition technolgy and metrology. On the other hand, large aperture, cylindrical, free-form or extremely

thin substrates pose similar demands regarding precision optics manufacturing.

LAYERTEC has dealt with these kinds of challenges for more than 25 years. Proper communication of the

desired specifications is key. This is true for industry clients as well as research institutes, for high-volume

fabrication or prototyping. ISO 10110 presents a helpful tool to formalize requirements. However, possible

issues are addressed here.

11:20 – 11:50

Passivation and optical coating of high-power diode-laser facets at FBH

P. Ressel, U. Spengler, A. Mogilatenko, A. Knigge, G. Tränkle

Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Berlin, Germany

The laser market is nowadays a multi-billion business with diode lasers claiming approx. 40% of the total

revenue during the last years. Essential for this success was the development and industrial implementation

of improved techniques for passivation and optical coating of the diode laser facets. The Ferdinand-Braun-

Institut in Berlin as a leading developer of diode lasers could rely on a proprietary facet passivation process

in establishing the Institute´s role as a respected partner of the diode laser industry. The technique now

routinely allows for maximum optical power densities of 40 MWcm-2 at the front facet of diode lasers emitting

at 970 nm. This is more than twice the value achieved with standard passivation techniques, e.g., low-

energy Ar ion beam etching of the facet´s native oxide. Besides, the talk will focus on aspects of quality

control, e.g., life-tests of passivated and coated diode lasers, and the use of analytical techniques.

11:50 – 12:10

Crystalline Mirror Technology – Challenges and Perspectives for High-Resolution Mid-IR Spectroscopy

O. Heckl

University of Vienna, Austria

Optical frequency comb spectroscopy has blossomed into a versatile tool for the broad-bandwidth and high-

spectral-resolution study of molecules in the mid-IR spectral region. Cavity-Enhanced Direct Frequency

Comb Spectroscopy (CE-DFCS) enables measurements with a simultaneous bandwidth of up to hundreds

of nm at a frequency resolution comparable to stable CW light sources.

In this talk I briefly review recent state of the art experiments in cavity enhanced spectroscopy along with

recent developments in crystalline mirror technology and discuss our work towards high-resolution mid-IR

spectroscopy.

Tuning the optical properties of porous gold nanoparticles

L. Juhász, B. Parditka, C. Cserháti, Z. Erdélyi

University of Debrecen, Hungary

Porous gold nanoparticles (PG-NP) are very popular due to their high surface/volume ratio, moreover they

have stronger plasmonic properties than their solid counterparts but are unstable at elevated temperatures.

We have shown that whereas as-produced PG-NPs start to coarsen at the temperature as low as 160 °C,

their counterparts passivated with a few nanometer alumina or titania using Plasma-Enhanced Atomic

Layer Deposition are thermally stable up to 800 °C. PG-NPs possess a very large tunability of the plasmonic

property contributed from the combined influences of particle size, volume porosity, pore size, and even

environmental medium, that is the passivating layer. We have shown that mixed alumina-titania passivating

layers provides a possibility to tune the optical properties of PG-NPs in a wide wavelength range. [1-3]

Keynote Lecture

Assessing critical imperfections of high-end optical coatings

S. Schröder

Fraunhofer IOF, Jena, Germany

Even high-end optical coatings exhibit small amounts of imperfections which may or may not affect the

optical performance with respect to optical losses and laser stability. Understanding the relevant loss and

damage mechanisms as well as characterizing the imperfections influencing these effects are key factors

for pushing and maintaining the performance of such components. This presentation focusses on the

discussion of the different impact of substrate and intrinsic coating roughness onto the scattering losses of

interference coatings. Examples will be presented for the characterization of optical components before

and after coating with respect to scattering distribution, scatter losses, relevant roughness and defects, as

well as on low-level residual transmittance and even low-fluence absorption. Finally, a new approach is

presented for spectrally resolved laser-induced damage testing and laser stability tests of defects.

14:40 – 15:00

Assessing Subsrate Independent Elastic Moduli of Thin Film Materials with Nanoindentation

E. Barisone1, K. E. Johanns2

1 Schaefer-Tec AG, Kirchberg BE, Switzerland

2 Applications Scientist, KLA, California, USA

From optical films, polymer systems, to composites the continued push across every industry to engineer

materials for smaller dimensions, longer life, and with improved properties requires an in depth

understanding of the mechanical properties for these films. Nanoindentation is a testing technique that

allows for characterizing the mechanical properties of small volumes of material. Recent advances in the

understanding of contact mechanics of layered media allows for measuring a substrate independent elastic

modulus of the film, i.e., the nanoindenter can provide a true measurement of elastic modulus as a function

of film thickness. Here, we will discuss the basics behind nanoindentation as well as the contact mechanics

that allows for these measurements. Examples of measurements will be shown on several film/substrate

combinations. Finally, a discussion will be provided for moving the measurements to ultra-thin films with

thicknesses below 50 nm.

Laser-inducded damage in ALD films

L. Jensen

Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V., Germany

For some time, Atomic Layer Deposition has been evaluated and driven towards applications in photonics.

It’s proposed high quality with pinhole free films, high density and excellent conformity suggests strongly to

take this process towards laser applications. First results from investigations on damage threshold levels

of state-of-the-art Al2O3 and HfO2 films and interaction details in the damage initiation process will be

presented and discussed. Data on nanosecond laser-induced damage from 1064 nm down to 266 nm will

give an overview on the status of ALD films in this particular field in Optics.

Afternoon Session 2

Monochromatic and broadband optical monitoring for deposition of band pass filters

B. Rubin1, J. George1, S. Kohli1, R. Singhal1, D. Deakins2

1 Veeco Instruments Inc., Plainview, USA

2 Meliora Scientific, Fort Collins, USA

Optical band pass filters (BPF) find broad range of applications in life sciences, spectroscopy,

telecommunications and other areas. Deposition of BPF requires precise control of layer thicknesses.

Various optical monitoring systems (OMS) were developed to enable precise layer thickness control.

Spectral pass band of BPFs can range from a fraction of a nanometer to tens of nanometers. The complexity

of the BPF design defines requirements to OMS such as spectral bandwidth and dynamic range. To satisfy

these requirements different light source and detector types can be used. Most band pass filters are

deposited using single wavelength 'turning point' monitoring strategy. Bandpass filter designs typically also

include non-quarter wave layers that allow matching a filter to a medium and allow achieving broad optical

blocking range. These layers can be effectively monitored by broadband optical monitoring. In this work we

review several monochromatic and broadband OMS configurations for monitoring BPF deposition and

demonstrate how OMS performance can be matched to BPF specifications.

Properties and applications of crystalline mirror coatings

Substrate-transferred crystalline coatings exhibit tenfold decrease in Brownian noise and 30 times higher

thermal conductivity (20-30 Wm-1K-1) compared to IBS coatings. The ultra-low noise character of these

semiconductor coatings is especially used for laser stabilization in optical clocks. Additionally, crystalline

coatings have superior performance in the mid-IR spectral range exhibiting excess losses down to 50 ppm.

Coupled with direct bonding to thermally-optimized substrates, this technology enables significant

performance enhancements in high-power solid-state disk and semiconductor laser systems. In

collaborative efforts we show that our direct bonding technology can not only enhance the thermal

management of high-power laser systems, but also the mechanical rigidity and surface quality of the

bonded elements.

High quality optical surfaces by Ion Beam Figuring and Sputtering

Dr. S. Gürtler

Bühler Alzenau GmbH, Germany

We present our recent advancement in the development of Ion Beam Figuring (IBF) and Ion Beam

Sputtering (IBS) equipment. IBF is an alternative way to correct shape errors, smoothen the surface or

modify the shape of optical reflective or refractive elements in a deterministic way. For high precision

surfaces traditional polishing and error correcting methods, such as MRF come to their limits due to the fact

that a physical contact between the tool and the surface is needed. With IBF at the contrary there is no

physical contact, it is a pure beam–surface interaction and no additional errors or subsurface damages

were created. We present results of IBF processes and show how we can make the IBF most economical

in the sense of shortening the process time. The obtained high precision, smooth surfaces are very suitable

to be coated using our IBS technology for very dense, extremely high reflective, high damage threshold

coatings. We present results on our current technological progress.
