3
With the release of the secondgeneration OptiMass 9500, GBCremains at the forefront in thedevelopment and marketing of ICPorthogonal Time of Flight MassSpectrometry.
The OptiMass 9500 has animpressive install base whichcovers both the traditional routinescreening and sample analysisthrough to unique laser ablation, graphite furnace and HPLCinterface applications. In fact, theOptiMass 9500 speed of analysisis particularly suited to any fasttransient type analysis.
No matter what yourapplication, the OptiMass 9500will analyse faster, moreaccurately and more costeffectively than ever before!
The OptiMass 9500 acquires allmasses simultaneously, analysistime is the same for one massor all masses.
The OptiMass 9500 performs30,000 acquisitions each second. Each acquisition simultaneouslymeasures every mass and isotopefrom mass 1 to mass 260 amu. This unique feature represents amajor advancement in technologyand differentiates the OptiMass9500 from any other ICP MassSpectrometer.
Low Operating Cost
Whether running a commerciallaboratory or a research facility, cost of operation is ALWAYSimportant. The OptiMass 9500 isboth faster and consumes lessArgon compared to a Quadrupole. When running USEPA method200.8 a quadrupole requires 180seconds per suite of elements. TheOptiMass 9500, however, requiresonly 25 seconds to analyse allelements.
Lower Argon Consumption
Due to the speed of analysis, the2nd generation OptiMass 9500requires less operating time thancompeting ICP-MS instrumentation, resulting in a 40% decrease inArgon consumption translating tocost savings.
Futuristic Technology
Simultaneous determination of trace elements inRiver Water using ICP-oTOFMS and USEPA 200.8method
Results were generated for allICP-MS measurable elementsand isotopes in the periodictable for this sample. With theOptiMass 9500, the sameanalysis time is required, regardless of the number ofelements required to beanalysed.
The USEPA 200.8 method hasbeen the standard method forICP-MS for the determination ofwaters and waste waters formany years.
Traditionally, this methodrequires 180 seconds acquisition timeper sample for the 20 elements to beanalysed. The OptiMass 9500 canaccurately quantify all ICP-MSmeasurable elements in 25 seconds.
SAMPLE COLLECTION
A SLRS-4 River Water Reference Material for trace elements wasanalysed.
STANDARD PREPARATION
A series of four standards containingall the elements of interest wereprepared. These were prepared in1%HNO33.

Rapid Sample Throughput
One of the largest Europeananalytical laboratories commissionedGBC to conduct a feasibility study todemonstrate how the OptiMass 9500would benefit their analyticalenvironment. This laboratory analysesmore than 2 million samples peryear, generating revenue in excess ofUSD$50M. With more than 700employees the laboratory isresponsible for the safe drinkingwater of 8 million Europeans.
The OptiMass 9500 wassuccessfully used for the analysis ofwater samples per the USEPA200.8 method. 26 elements in acertified river water sample werequantified. In contrast to aquadrupole ICP-MS, which requiresan 180 second acquisition time for20 elements per sample, theOptiMass 9500 requires only 25seconds per sample.
5 Times Faster Sample Analysis than a QuadrupoleDuring this acquisition, it is possibleto analyse and quantify all ICP-MSmeasurable elements and isotopesbecause of the true simultaneousnature of the OptiMass 9500’sdata acquisition capabilities.
All masses are displayedsimultaneously. This means thatthe user can view possiblecontaminants and elements notpreviously considered.
The objective of the laboratorywas to increase samplethroughput beyond thecapabilities of their existingquadrupole ICP-MS. Detectionlimits in the ppb range, rapidservice response, minimalmaintenance and maximummean time between failures wereall critical considerations for thislaboratory.
The OptiMass 9500 clearlydemonstrated that it could not onlymeet, but exceed, this customer’sstringent requirements and alsodemonstrated that it is a valuableanalytical instrument which canincrease sample throughput by afactor of five.
Results show excellent reproducability over 14 hours.
The additional information canprompt the user to investigate andquantify these newly identifiedcontaminants and elements.

Unique Retrospective Semi-Quantitative Analysis
The ICP-oTOFMS offers the uniquefeature of powerful retrospectivesemi-quantitative analysis modenot available on any other form ofICP-MS.
The ICP-oTOFMS Semi-Quantitativeanalysis uses factory defined relativesensitivity factors (RSF) to define thedetector response to an unknownconcentration of analytes. Thesimultaneous nature of the OptiMass9500 allows not only semi-quantitative,but also retrospective semi-quantitativeanalysis (RSQ).
Every analysis contains data for everymass, the OptiMass 9500 continuouslyacquires data from mass 1 through tomass 260 amu. Utilising the RSQfeature, this data is always available forfuture examination and quantification formasses not previously callibrated.
Data for Future Reference
When comparative studies arerequired, such as in ForensicScience, it can be very useful to usespectral fingerprinting.
This type of analysis allows spectrato be compared to determine howclosely they match by giving afigure from 0 to 1. Thiscomparison is achieved using astatistical algorithm that compares atest spectrum to a known spectrum.
This can be a comparison of anSRM to sample material or thecomparison of scene-of-crimeevidence to samples recovered fromsuspect’s residence, vehicle orpersonal belongings.
The OptiMass 9500 then providesrapid multielement analysisenabling complete spectral datacollection. This, coupled with thepowerful statistical fingerprintingsoftware of the OptiMass 9500,completes the package forcomparative analysis.
SMALL VOLUMES
The true simultaneous multielementcapability of the Time-of-Flighttechnology used in the OptiMass9500 ensures that all informationcan be obtained from the analysisof small volume samples oftenfound in scene-of-crime scenarios.
For example, in the event of thedetonation of so called, “dirty”weapons, the speed andportablility of the OptiMass 9500make it ideal for “on site”fingerprinting of radio-nuclidesreleased during the event.
Spectral fingerprinting is also anextremely useful tool in screeningsamples for many applications. Theuse of this technique, coupled withthe speed of Time-of-Flight, is anideal tool for rapid screening ofsamples for international securitypurposes.
9
Sample Matching
This would allow authorities to quickly implement thecorrect safety procedures.
Multielement Spectral Fingerprinting Capability
The Time-of-Flight technology usedin the OptiMass 9500 allows rapidauto-optimisation of all instrumentparameters across the entire massrange. The simultaneous acquisitionof all masses from mass 1 to mass260 amu means that this feature willautomatically compensate for massbias effects. The flexible OptiMass9500 software allows the use of anycombinations of instrumentparameters to perform theoptimisation.
The auto optimisation software willoptimise torch position, nebuliserflow, beam energy and otherfocusing parameters. Also, anyisotope mass can be selected foroptimisation on either sensitivity orresolution. Minimum and maximumparameter values can be defined aswell as parameter step size duringoptimisation, to allow for settling ofgas flow parameters. Thecomprehensive results panel suppliesa complete report of the entireoptimisation process (if required).
