About our Courses

Opus Learning delivers all its HNC, HND and PDA course units online. It is therefore a prerequisite that

all Opus Learning students have a reliable Internet connection.

Opus Learning delivers ALL the materials that a student requires to study and pass the assessments

for the units of a course. These materials are delivered as:

A complete set of integrated web pages in an online learning environment;

PDF versions of the core learning materials.

The latter means that students can do much of their study offline and from paper, if they wish to print

the materials, though there are interactive features within the web pages that make it essential to do

part of this study online. These features include:

Building up of a Digital Workbook through the input of various Reflective Activities in the core

learning materials;

Completing the case study or essay questions in the various summative assessments in most

of the units.

Tutor contact is also facilitated online through the 'ticket-based' Helpdesk, which allows Opus

Learning to formally track all communications between student and tutor.

Assessment

Assessment of the units is generally through open-book assignment undertaken within a limited time

window, with submissions submitted online. There are some exceptions to this where closed-book,

time constrained examinations are used.

Page 6: Opus Learning Catalogue

OPUS LEARNING COURSES AND QUALIFICATIONS

Version: 12/06/2014 Page 3

This latter mechanism is used for the HNC level Graded Units as this is dictated by the Scottish

Qualifications Authority - the SQA. The HND Graded Units are assessed by Project work.

Assessment strategies can change over time, and Opus Learning will work towards ensuring that their

assessment strategy meets the requirements of the SQA, but that it develops to suit the needs of

online distance learning. For example, Opus Learning will look to use the portfolio of reflective inputs,

built up through the Digital Workbook 'reflections', to assess students.

About SQA

The Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) is the national accreditation and awarding body in Scotland.

The organisation has two main roles: accreditation, and awarding qualifications.

Within these roles they offer a range of services for businesses and training providers, ranging from

course and centre approval through customised awards, to endorsement, credit rating and licensing

services.

SQA Accreditation:

Accredits qualifications other than degrees

Approves, and quality assures awarding bodies that plan to enter people

for these qualifications

In SQA’s accreditation role, they accredit vocational qualifications that are

offered across Scotland, including Scottish Vocational Qualifications. The SQA

also approves awarding bodies that wish to award them.

SQA Awarding Body:

Devises and develops qualifications

Validates qualifications (makes sure they are well written and meet the needs of learners and

tutors)

Reviews qualifications to ensure they are up to date

Arranges for, assists in, and carries out, the assessment of people taking SQA qualifications

Quality-assures education and training establishments which offer SQA qualifications

Issues certificates to candidates

As an awarding body, the SQA work with schools, colleges, universities, industry, and government, to

provide high quality, flexible and relevant qualifications. They strives to ensure that their qualifications

are inclusive and accessible to all, that they recognise the achievements of learners, and that they

provide clear pathways to further learning or employment.

About IAAP

The International Association of Accounting Professionals (IAAP)

has been established to provide international recognition for the

level of qualification achievement of accounting professionals

and, through that recognition, to enhance their status in the

financial and business communities.

Holders of a current IAAP membership certificate can enjoy the

benefits of this international recognition in their careers. The

IAAP 'Accounting Professional' also enjoys the prestige and

status that is conferred by this title.

The IAAP awards its own IAAP membership and qualification certificates and also promotes, as a route

to IAAP membership, the qualifications of the IAB, a recognised Awarding Body and regulated in

England by Ofqual – the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator.

IAAP also recognises and grants exemption to those applicants for membership that hold comparable

qualifications of other recognised UK and international professional and awarding bodies.

The administration and direction of IAAP is provided on its behalf by the IAB from its head office in

the UK and also is supported by the IAB's network of international representatives, agents and other

collaborative partners.

How do we assess your work

Opus Learning provides online education, so we have the usual problems to address. We have to

Ensure that we can observe the progress of the learner.

Make sure that the learner is indeed the correct person, no impersonation.

Know if a learner has a problem, and also need to know that their tutor has helped the learner

to fix that problem.

Identify when learners need further support to aid their progress.

Our solution is shown in the following diagram:

Our learning and teaching environment has tools for delivering audit trails from the learning process;

tools to authenticate candidates; and to identify intervention requirements.

What we have made is a system which can be viewed as a portfolio embedded in the content for the

learner to complete and own, we call it the Digital Work Book (DWB). The DWB can also be viewed as

a dashboard for the tutor to manage the learning of a student or a group of students. It acts as the

locus for our inbuilt assessment engine to enable students to achieve assessment points as they learn.

Each student has their own Digital Workbook which is integrated to the learning of each specific unit

of the course.

What the student can then take away from the course is a downloadable e-book of all of the content

of the course, and also an e-book of their Digital Workbook. This gives the student a complete record

of their learning experience.

The Digital Workbook is based within the learning content as an integral part of the learning materials.

It therefore allows us to make questions in context, as a support mechanism for testing the

understanding of concepts. More importantly it supports reflective thinking, and informs the tutor of

assessment along the duration of the unit.

Page 11: Opus Learning Catalogue

OPUS LEARNING COURSES AND QUALIFICATIONS

Version: 12/06/2014 Page 8

As well as this ongoing formative

assessment of the course, there are

also the summative assessments

required by the awarding body.

These can take many forms –

essays, quizzes, presentations and

exams. Exams can take place in

secure sites organised by Opus

Learning, on Opus Learning’s own

premises, or in the students own

workplace, to an agreed structure.

Page 12: Opus Learning Catalogue

How do we know who is doing the

course?

This is the perennial question in distance and online learning. How do we know that the person

studying the course and sitting the assessments is the person registered for the course?

Digital Authentication

At Opus Learning we use a mixture of digital and physical authentication.

Online learning candidates must log into a secure portal via a customised user id and password. All

candidates who enrol in courses at Opus Learning are authenticated through an identity management

system that

provides a unique

user name and

password for

access. Without

these identifiers,

candidates cannot

register for classes

or access Opus

Learning tools for

distance learning.

Opus Learning’s

policies regarding

academic honesty

and acceptable

use of Information

Technology Services include penalties for unauthorised use of another individual’s name and

password and for cheating on examinations.

In the future, when other methodologies to assist with candidate authentication become more

prevalent and affordable, Opus Learning will use them.

The Physical Presence Requirements of a Programme

In every online programme there are various requirements where physical presence is required by

candidates. These occur at various points in the course:

Closed book instrument of assessment

Proctored examination, e.g. graded unit

Presentation by candidate, e.g. in a unit using PowerPoint

Presence at meeting, e.g. unit on communications

For each qualification presented in Opus Learning, a map of such events is constructed. At each of

these events, the candidate will be required to present photo ID. This can be accomplished by using

cameras at virtual or tele-conferenced events. At each of these events, the candidate will be required

Page 13: Opus Learning Catalogue

to produce photo-ID.

Digital Recording of Candidate Progress

Opus Learning delivers its programmes via a VLE, which includes a portfolio – the Digital Workbook.

Both the VLE and the workbook are used to monitor the progress of the candidate. The VLE logs all

activity by a candidate, based on their secure login information.

The Digital Workbook records all candidate reflections in an organised manner, and delivers this to

the candidate in the form of a PDF, and for the tutor, in the form of a table of activities completed and

yet to complete.

Scottish Qualifications Explained

UK qualifications - HNC, HND or PDA - map to a level on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications

Framework (SCQF). The SCQF is a national credit transfer system for all levels of qualifications in

Scotland, and defines a number of levels, from 'Access' levels all the way up to Doctoral Degrees

(PhDs). The SCQF is managed by a partnership sponsored by the Scottish Government.

Higher National Awards (HNC/HND)

Higher National Certificates/Diplomas (HNC/Ds) are offered by colleges, some universities and many

other training centres, and are specially designed to meet the needs of employers both locally and

nationally.

Opus Learning is one such Scottish Qualifications Authority Approved centre.

All HNC/D courses are made up of HN Unit credits, at level 7/8 on the SCFQ scale.

One credit represents roughly 40 hours of timetabled learning.

HNCs are made up of 12 credits, usually taking one year to complete

HNDs are made up of 30 credits, usually taking two years to complete

They cover a very wide range of subjects including Business, Management and Leadership, and

Marketing.

Page 15: Opus Learning Catalogue

Version: 12/06/2014 Page 12

Professional Development Awards (PDA)

Professional Development Awards (PDAs) are

designed for people already in a career or vocation

and who wish to extend or broaden their skills base.

PDAs assess and certify student progression in a

defined set of specialist occupational skills.

PDAs also sit within the SQCF framework, and

available at a very wide range from SCQF level 6 up

to level 12, though most sit at the same level as the

HNC/Ds. PDA units tend to also be studied within

HNC/D programmes. PDAs are made up of a

minimum credit value of 16 SCQF credit points - two

units - and are generally aligned to National

Occupational Standards or other professional body

standards.

Linking with Universities

There is a large range of universities which recognise SQA and Opus Learning qualifications. Students

who have completed their HND can apply to university for entry into the second or third years of an

undergraduate programme.

The SQA itself manages many of these articulation routes and advertise many of the relationships that

they have established with universities in the UK and around the world.

SQA and the individual university have detailed agreements already in place about acceptance of SQA

HND graduates at advanced level for a relevant degree. Specifications for results to be achieved in

the graded units are set by the individual universities.

SQA details those universities with which it has direct relationships on their web site here:

The Value of Qualifications Qualifications are of significant value for professional and personal development. And they are also

highly important for the employer in terms of influencing organisational performance.

Financial benefits Gaining qualifications gives you higher earning potential and increases

your likelihood for financial rewards and promotions.

Greater employability Improving your knowledge and skill is especially significant in the

current economic situation, where there is a competition for jobs.

Employers prefer people with qualifications and respect those who are

motivated to acquire them. It shows determination, organisation and

motivation. All qualities related to independent study.

Holding internationally recognised awards gives the individual greater

flexibility and choice in their career, whilst also offering a form of job

security. You are proven to be qualified making it advantageous when

looking for a new job or making a change in direction.

Job satisfaction Learning helps you to increase your level of ability and contributes to

achievement in work. Having the ability to succeed and make a strong

contribution leads to greater job satisfaction.

Productivity Qualifications are evidence of your productivity and evidence of your

ability to deliver results effectively.

Broader

perspective/improved

capability

Learning broadens your perspective, challenges your thinking and can

make you more innovative. Further, it gives you the ability and

confidence to improve and be more confident in adopting new ideas,

working methods and practices and technology.

Knowledge Qualifications show you’ve gained new knowledge and improved. They

demonstrate your ability to adapt and develop yourself. The

transferable knowledge gained can be applied to different contexts and

situations, helping you to move roles within companies or between

different organisations and sectors.

Self-development Learning gives you greater self awareness, helping you to figure out

your strengths and weaknesses. This improves your confidence,

especially when developing own ideas and when making decisions, but

also gains you the respect of colleagues and employers.

Management Learning helps you to apply and improve practical management skills,

tools, and strategies.

New networks Opus Learning provides contemporary distance learning which can give

you access to an extensive body of people and the chance to generate

strong global relationships on a professional and potentially social

level.

Self management Learning and holding awards gives you the ability to develop

leadership skills, which enable you to manage tasks and communication

with colleagues, build trust and support within teams, inspire and

develop the skills of individuals, and help you to deal with interpersonal

issues.

The Value of Qualifications for

Employers

Productivity

The added value of employee qualifications help an

employer to increase an organisation’s productivity

and hence to maximise their profitability, efficiency,

and competitiveness. This is especially beneficial

when the employer is maximising employee

motivation and is encouraging them to ensure the

practical application of learning in the place of

employment.

Staff attraction

Qualifications help employers to increase staff

attraction rates. Ensuring employees an adequate level of supervisory support gives them affirmation

to work in the right work climate/culture. In addition to that, qualifications are an effective measure

for guaranteeing quality within the recruitment procedure.

Professional reputation/quality assurance

Employee qualifications increase the professional image and the

reputation of an organisation. Qualifications can help an

employer to assure his brand reputation, by recruiting and

keeping people with demonstrable competence.

Qualifications can also underpin compliance with legislation in

the regulated industries.

Nowadays, with individuals managing their own professional

development throughout their career, an employer can view their employee as a developing

professional with the support of professional bodies. The professional bodies accredit learning

programmes, and all of Opus Learning courses and qualifications come with professional body

recognition, and some lead to fast track membership of those bodies. This ensures that employers

have industry recognised employees.

The Making of a MOOC/LOOC

“Large scale online learning could provide continuity for learners throughout their lives between

different education systems.” - Association of Learning Technology Draft Green Paper 2013.

Single-source courses are the future of education publishing. They underpin the semantically-rich,

integrated and coherent research, teaching and learning experiences we want. Not only that, but they

are also cost-effective to produce, maintain and reuse.

Whether MOOCs form part of your online distance learning strategy or not, a content oriented,

standards based approach to developing learning materials allows for highly interactive, functional

and integrated deliveries to a wide range of platforms. XML is the key to building this content moving

forward, and crucially it is the main event, compared to the more narrowly focussed standards (though

higher press profile) that include SCORM, Tin Can & HTML 5.

In this session, Ken Currie will share key learning experiences Opus Learning & CAPDM have gleaned

on the back of developing scalable content for education programmes, such as the Heriot-Watt

University MBA, the Global Online initiative at Edinburgh Napier University, sport science at Edinburgh

University, SQA Higher National Awards for wholly online delivery to students around the world and,

more recently, their MOOCs for University of Iceland.

A scalable, content oriented, standards based approach addresses all modern publishing devices and

needs. It will do for course development, what the production line did for cars.

Workshop Outcomes

Understanding of content production methods

Integration of pedagogy with awarding body styles

What to do and what not to do in developing a MOOC

Tracking the growth of the MOOC

Target Audience

Academics and managers who wish to exploit the technologies of MOOCs, perhaps implemented as a

Local Open Online Course (LOOC), where there is access to local support which obviates the need for

large numbers of students.

Flipping the Classroom with Opus Learning

There have been many stories recently in the press about Flipping the Classroom. The ‘traditional

model’ is to use a video based lecture to replace the expositive component of learning in the

classroom. The idea is to release time for the teacher to focus on interactions with students via

exercises and Q&A. Flipping changes teachers from “sage on the stage” to “guide on the side”,

allowing them to work with individuals or groups of students throughout the session. This discussion

has been going on for 20 years since Alison King wrote her short piece From Sage on the Stage to

Guide on the Side (Alison King; Journal: College Teaching, Volume 41, Issue 1, January 1993, pages 30-

35).

When one designs for online study, the student is at the centre of focus. Every screen, every exercise,

every assessment instrument has the individual student as the sole user. But that does not mean that

these resources take away the role of the teacher or the support system of the physical class room.

A teacher with a cohort of students working in a physical classroom, or indeed, working with small

groups who may be dispersed over a geography can exploit our technologies and content to build

their own blend of learning.

In this workshop we consider how different constructivist ideas can be used to build a tailored blend

of learning for a particular context.

Workshop Outcomes

Reviewing Opus Learning courses for blended re-design

Designing classroom interventions

Continuing learning beyond the classroom

Recording the progress of learning

Watching the outliers of a learning cohort.

Target Audience

Teachers of short cycle higher education (college diplomas)

College lecturers

TVET specialists designing TVET projects.

Publishing Learning Content

The Five Stages

of Publishing

There are generally speaking, 5 stages in the publishing of learning content. We

have developed a five stage model which has worked well for us for over 17 years,

through a wide range of technologies and new ideas in pedagogy.

Capture You may already have a large body of legacy learning materials on paper, or

perhaps thousands of electronic files formatted in a variety of incompatible

formats. In this stage assets are rescued and re-formed into international

standard formats.

Author Standardising the authoring process creates an opportunity to build a master

source repository that contains the individual master versions of each valuable

asset.

Publish Publishing activities focus on extracting learning materials from the master source

repository and ensuring that published learning content will survive any change in

technology.

Deliver The Deliver stage is the most important one of the CAPDM model in that if the

publication fails in its delivery, the effort involved in the capture, author and

publish steps goes un-rewarded.

Manage The Manage step recognises that all the previous stages generate and use ‘meta’

information as part of the workflow. These meta data, and the associated human

workflows must be managed correctly, or the whole project can fail.

Workshop Outcomes

Understanding the 5 stages of publishing

Reviewing a case study form your own organisation

Designing a project plan for a publishing instance

The Management of Online Assessment

One of the main differences between open and classroom based education is the granularity of each

assessment instrument. In the online world, assessment can be very open, almost on demand

assessment, this gives us a problem in not being able to assess holistically in the way a teacher can

make assessments in the classroom.

On the other hand it is possible in an online environment to track all the students’ online activity, or at

least that activity which takes place within the learning environment itself.

Today, we can track many aspects of learners’ behaviour as well as their scores in multiple choice tests.

This leads to the opportunities and problems of ‘big data’ and learning analytics.

In this workshop we look at the issues of granularity and integration of assessment. We also review

current ideas in learning analytics, and provide the participants with a range of case studies, and ideas.

Workshop Outcomes

Designing the assessment load for a student

Tracking for outliers and strategies for reaction

Current views on learning analytics
