Introduction

Oracle Data Guard is the comprehensive data protection, data availability, and disaster recovery solution included with the Oracle Database since Oracle 9i. Active Data Guard 11g, an option license for Oracle Database Enterprise Edition, introduced advanced capabilities that fundamentally change the traditional disaster recovery paradigm. Active Data Guard is an HA/DR solution providing unparalleled data protection for the Oracle Database and where standby systems simultaneously support reporting or test functions while in standby role.

Active Data Guard with Oracle Database 12c continues the steady evolution of this technology:

• It expands the number of reporting applications that can be offloaded from production by allowing read-write access to global temporary tables on an Active Data Guard standby.

• It enables zero data loss protection across any distance and off-host transport compression without affecting production database performance using Active Data Guard Far Sync.

• Active Data Guard Rolling Upgrade makes it simpler than ever to reduce planned downtime.

• It includes Global Data Services to provide intelligent load balancing and automated service management across replicated databases, within the same or across multiple data centers.

• It includes Application Continuity to make outages transparent to users by reliably handling in-flight transactions following database or site outages.

This document serves as a reference of successful Data Guard and Active Data Guard deployments across a broad spectrum of industry verticals. More information including best practices, documentation, and demonstrations are available on the Oracle Technology Network at www.oracle.com/goto/dataguard.

State of Texas

The State of Texas uses Oracle Exadata as a consolidation platform to cost effectively provide private cloud services to twenty eight different state agencies. One of their major goals is to eliminate redundancy and enforce standards among versions and operating environments. For example, when the state examined usage of Oracle’s PeopleSoft applications handling HR and finance, they discovered nearly 100 implementations throughout the state, many with unique customizations and little standardization regarding the versions, platforms, and management procedures.

The Texas Department of Information Resources decided to use the cloud technologies within the Oracle Exadata and Oracle Exalogic lines to provision a shared “PeopleSoft-as-a-service” environment that the agencies can consume in a simple, straightforward way. “Shared services require a complete platform,” says Kimbriel. “We began with Oracle Exadata”. The state uses Oracle Active Data Guard for disaster recovery and integration between Active Data Guard and Peoplesoft People Tools to transparently offload reports to active standby databases. Oracle Global IT

Oracle Global IT uses Oracle’s own products at global scale, supporting more than 120,000 employees worldwide. Data Guard is the DR solution used to protect all critical databases that support Oracle development and business operations. One of the best examples of this is Oracle’s own Beehive collaboration application which runs on Exadata and the Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA). Oracle Beehive is a centralized collaboration system for all Oracle employees, provided email, messaging, calendar management, conferencing, and document management services.

Since going live on Exadata X2-2, Beehive has been available 100% while meeting performance SLA’s, even as Oracle continues to add large numbers of new users through acquisitions. MAA has made these extreme levels of scalability and availability possible while enabling Oracle to dramatically reduce cost by consolidating global operations onto a single Oracle Database and single Oracle grid. Beehive uses Data Guard configured in Maximum Performance mode and asynchronous transport services over a wide area network (primary and standby are separated by 1,300 miles). An overview of the configuration and benefits is provided in the figure below.

United Parcel Service (UPS)

UPS is the world's largest package delivery company and a leading global provider of specialized transportation and logistics services. Every day, UPS manages the flow of goods, funds, and information in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. While Oracle databases provide an important ingredient to UPS' information flow network, UPS must also keep a keen eye out for meeting SLA requirements related to High Availability - for both unplanned and planned outages. For example, the maximum allowed downtime for any single event must be less than 15 minutes. In this context, Oracle Database upgrades constitute a highly critical element of planned maintenance activity, and UPS must look into ways of minimizing planned downtime related to database upgrades. Thankfully, the Rolling Upgrade with Transient Logical capability in Data Guard, UPS was able to demonstrate taking only 4 minutes of application outage to perform database patchset or major release upgrades – see figure below. For further information, refer to this UPS presentation.

Athens International Airport

Athens International Airport is the largest hub for air travel in southeastern Europe. Its IT systems went through an infrastructure overhaul prior to the 2004 Athens Olympics Games, and the IT staff of the airport – after considerable due diligence, chose Oracle Database 11g and Oracle MAA components such as RAC, ASM and Active Data Guard, to meet the strict SLAs of its mission critical systems, which run Oracle E-Business Suite and Airport Management Systems. Active Data Guard – in addition to ensuring continuous data protection, has significantly boosted the performance of its main production systems by offloading reporting and content delivery to various stakeholders such as Telcos and Government authorities. Active Data Guard has also enhanced overall IT security by restricting access to its production servers from reporting applications and backup jobs, by ensuring that these applications run only on the Active standby database.
