With last year’s acquisition of Perot Systems, Dell Services has a newly expanded portfolio of services—and a new practice focusing on Oracle technologies. This Dell Services Oracle Practice is now in positionto provide end-to-end services to Oracle users—encompassing applications, middleware and the data-base—to help companies drive complexity and cost out of the IT infrastructure.

Today, the consulting industry is evolving to meet the changing needs of the companies it serves. A keydevelopment in that evolution was Dell’s purchase in late 2009 of Perot Systems, the worldwideprovider of information technology services and business solutions, and the integration of that organiza-tion into Dell Services.

That acquisition expanded the Dell Services portfolio significantly. Perot Systems was a pioneer inthe field, and a world-class provider of applications, technology, infrastructure, and consulting services. Its capabilities, combined with Dell’s, means that Dell Services now has a greatly enhanced ability toprovide comprehensive services to clients.

A key component of this broader approach lies in the area of Oracle-related services, based on thecomplementary strengths of Perot Systems and Dell. Perot Systems had a consulting practice focus-ing on Oracle applications in place since 1995, while Dell has built up a range of services based onrunning Oracle database and middleware software on Dell servers and storage. Bringing these capa-bilities together, Dell has created the Dell Services Oracle practice to provide end-to-end services—spanning business strategy, design, build, maintenance and outsourcing offerings—for the range ofOracle technologies.

“This acquisition has created a new, major IT services provider,” says Tim Daigle, Managing Directorof the Oracle Practice, who came to Dell from Perot Systems. “It enhances the already-strong Dell-Oracle relationship, and it opens up new options for Oracle users.” Dell, Daigle explains, is a leadingreseller of Oracle products across the entire product range, and the largest provider of Oracle databasesolutions among Oracle partners. “Now, the Dell Oracle Practice can support the entire Oracle solutionstack with a full suite of services.”

Addressing the Key ChallengesIn addition to these broad Oracle-specific capabilities, the Dell Services Oracle Practice helps Oracle users meetspecific IT and business challenges, with offerings thataddress:

| Business Transformation. Dell Services uses best busi-ness processes and organizational change management, coupled with Oracle ERP/SCM solutions to implementtransformational business improvement for companiesas they expand geographically into new markets andproducts.

| Application management. Using a Service LevelAgreement (SLA)-based delivery model, these servicesfocus on delivering both cost-effective, reliable serviceand ongoing quality and productivity improvements.Delivery is based on ITIL, CMMI, and AIM methodologies, and a mix of on shore, near shore, and off shoreresources tailored to the client organization’s specificneeds. Dell’s application management services includefunctional and technical support, support for ancillarysystems, core DBA services, infrastructure hosting, net-work services and help-desk support.

| Business intelligence. Dell helps Oracle users providemanagement with more comprehensive reporting onbusiness performance, along with deep-dive analyticsand dashboards to support improved decision making. The Dell Services Optimized Business Intelligence pro-gram integrates key financial and operational informa-tional analytics throughout the organization with afocus on using best practices to standardize processesand drive profitability. Dell also provides data models forkey industries, and an optimization program to jump-start business-intelligence deployments.

| Master Data Management. Oracle has a growing num-ber of pre-built Master Data Management (MDM) solu-tions, such Hyperion Data Relationship Management,Oracle Customer Hub, Oracle Product Hub, Oracle SiteHub and Oracle Higher Education Constituent Hub. Delloffers a portfolio of MDM services that help companiesleverage those Oracle solutions.

| ERP Healthcheck. Dell Services ERP Healthcheck gaugeshow effectively an organization is leveraging its currentOracle applications, and then helps it to realize the fullvalue of those applications. The service addresses issuesby evaluating the existing deployment, mapping busi-ness requirements to the application configuration, iden-tifying performance gaps, and providing a roadmap forfilling those gaps.

A Shorter Road to ROIReduced complexity in IT can pay off in increased pro-ductivity and lower costs, and Dell Services’ expandedportfolio has a number of targeted services that aredesigned to help Oracle users move forward withimprovement initiatives. These include:

| Migration. Dell Services continues to migrate com-panies from proprietary systems to Oracle and DellLinux platforms, helping to assess re-platformingopportunities, move applications and database sys-tems to the new platforms, and implementing OracleRAC—all of which enables companies to take advan-tage of low-cost, standards-based infrastructures.

| Pre-configured solutions. These include pre-configuredanalytics for the healthcare, manufacturing, consumerand packaged goods industries, as well as supply chainand human resources applications. Meanwhile,pre-configured industry solutions are available for milledproducts, education and state and local government.

| Accelerators. Dell speeds up Oracle E-Business Suiteimplementations with a methodology that uses OracleBusiness Accelerator solutions to quickly provide scala-ble, industry-specific functionality. These acceleratorsolutions are available in pre-packaged, fixed-price,and fixed-scope application bundles.

| Cloud offerings, such as cloud assessments, on-demand Oracle Cloud development environments forupgrades and add-ons, and a JumpStart Cloud offeringthat enables accelerated ERP implementations.

Target: Reduced IT Complexity and CostToday, the Dell Services Oracle Practice includes some 1,100professionals and a network of Oracle-specific centers inBrazil, China, India, Mexico, and the US. Dell is a OraclePlatinum Partner, the highest level in Oracle’s partner pro-grams. Overall, this practice is charged with supporting andextending the ongoing efforts of both Dell and Oracle totake cost and complexity out of the IT infrastructure. “Formost companies, 75 to 80 percent of their IT budget isspent on maintaining the status quo—just keeping thelights on from an IT perspective,” says Daigle. “Our goal asa company is to drive that number down to under 50 per-cent for our customers, so that they can focus on new andstrategic initiatives.”

The Dell Oracle Services Practice works with a widerange of Oracle technologies. It offers services focusing onapplications, including the Oracle E-Business Suite,PeopleSoft, JD Edwards, Hyperion, Oracle BusinessIntelligence Enterprise Edition, Oracle Billing and RevenueManagement, and Siebel customer relationship manage-ment applications. The practice also works with OracleFusion middleware and service-oriented architecture prod-ucts, as well as many of Oracle’s industry-specific offerings.

To help companies get the most out of these tech-nologies, the Dell Oracle Practice provides consultingthat focuses on identifying opportunities for transforma-tion or improvement through customization, modernizationand maintenance. And to help companies exploit thoseopportunities, the practice provides development, cus-tomization, implementation, integration, testing andmaintenance services.

Meanwhile, Dell Services also help companies simplifydata center operations with assessment, design and imple-mentation services that focus on Oracle Database, includ-ing Real Application Clusters, in a standards-based x86environment. These services—designed to an enhance dataavailability while lowering the total cost of ownership—arebased on best practices developed through rigorous jointengineering between Dell and Oracle. Companies can alsooffload database administration and get customized sup-port through Dell Services.

Building on CollaborationThe creation of the Dell Services Oracle Practice builds on,and extends, a very long and successful relationshipbetween Oracle and Dell. “This strategic relationship hasbeen in place for nearly 20 years, and includes the mostsenior levels of management at both companies,” saysDaigle. That relationship continues to grow, with Dellworking actively with Oracle to test the new Oracle Fusionsuite of applications on Dell servers.

What’s more, both companies use Dell and Oracle plat-forms in their respective operations around the world—alevel of experience that gives Dell Services deep insightinto the day-to-day use of Oracle in running a business. For its part, Oracle relies on more than 20,000 Linuxservers to power key elements of its Global IT operations.Meanwhile, Dell relies on PowerEdge servers runningOracle Database 11g in several mission-critical businesssystems, including its supply chain and European ordermanagement systems, while Oracle applications are usedin its supply chain operations.

“When Dell acquired Perot Systems, those of us comingover from Perot were delighted because we knew that thenew Dell Oracle practice would be able to tap into thisdeep relationship,” says Daigle. That relationship contin-ues to grow, he adds, with Dell working actively withOracle to test the new Oracle Fusion suite of applicationson Dell servers.

At the same time, the Dell Oracle Practice has an estab-lished relationship with the Oracle Consulting organiza-tion. In fact, the two groups have gained significant practi-cal experience in working together through their collabo-ration on Dell’s internal IT transformation effort. Thiswork includes implementing additional Oracle applica-tions to support billing and the quote-to-cash process, andultimately reducing complexity by eliminating hundredsof legacy systems.

“There are very few players in the industry that can doeverything high-end business strategy work and globalsystems design to implementations and upgrades, multi-year support and application outsourcing,” concludesDaigle. “To Oracle users, that breadth means that theyhave access to the knowledge and tools they need to sim-plify the data center, increase productivity, and keep ITaligned with the business.”
