Extended Oracle RAC
• Note 1:From an Oracle perspecMve, an Extended RAC installaMon is used as soon as data (using Oracle ASM) is mirrored between independent storage arrays. (Exadata Storage Cells are excluded from this definiMon.)
• Note 2: An Extended RAC between “Germany” and “ArgenMna” as the hostnames may suggest is not supported.
• Note 3: ER: open to make "EXTENDED ORACLE RAC" A DISTINGUISHABLE CONFIGURATION

Why Oracle RAC on Extended Distance Clusters? • Customers use Extended RAC mostly for the following reasons: 1. Mirror data between fire-‐cells in the same building.
2. Establish an acDve/acDve data center (DC) usage. • Greatest distance currently spanned: 52KM • Supported distance to be spanned: 100KM • Most customers use Extended RAC for distances < 5KM
3. Use for a 2+1 data centers (DCs) implementaDon. • "2+1" = 2 DCs with close proximity; 1 further apart for disaster recovery

What to Consider when Using Oracle Extended RAC? • Oracle Extended RAC alone is not a disaster recovery solu7on. – Oracle recommends using an Oracle Data Guard setup for full DR protecDon.
• The network latency impact on the performance of an applicaDon running on an Extended RAC setup cannot be predicted, as there is no direct relaDon between them. It needs to be tested. – The higher the latency, the more impact it might have, but it cannot be predicted to what degree the applicaDon performance will suffer per ms latency increase.
• A hardware architecture that is suitable for running an Extended RAC setup, can be used for Oracle RAC One Node, avoiding network latency impact under normal operaDons, as well as Oracle Data Guard.

Mirror data between fire-‐cells in the same building
• Amadeus uses Extended RAC to mirror data between storages located in different fire cells in the same building.
• This enables acDve/acDve cluster use and enables rolling cluster upgrades.

Establish an acMve/acMve data center (DC) usage
• Rabobank has standardized on Oracle RAC with an acDve/acDve DC setup.
• Rabobank has 550+ Oracle RAC Databases (running 1300+ Instances)

Establish a 2+1 data center (DC) usage
• Postbank uses Extended RAC between two DCs on the leh and the right side of the river Rhine in Bonn, Germany. • Distance approx. 16KM
• Postbank also uses a 3rd DC in a non-‐disclosed locaDon to obey with 2+1 regulaDons for certain banks in GER.
