Rakark are one of the larger arboreal creatures, standing 1.2m high and weighing up to 60kg. Usually black or brown furred (regional variations are common), they are famous for their long, brawny forearms, each sporting a four digit hand – two opposable ‘thumbs’ facing a pair of long fingers tipped with thick, curved-claws used for both climbing and defence.

Rakark are omnivores, but have a distinct preference for meat. They are bold and aggressive hunters and scavengers - which often brings them into conflict with man, in both the general competition for resources and infamous, well-organised raids on unwary travellers, village storehouses or even merchant caravans – sometimes carrying off people as well as food and objects.

A rackark’s skill ranks allow it to fight while climbing without penalty and their ambushes inflict -15 to initiative. They never fumble jumping tests, and additional dodges each CT suffer only a -20 penalty.

Range: Range: Range: Range: Rackark are a common hazard in Dummonii, where their strength and cunning is well respected – and they’ve given their name to the rarkscain knife that mimics the curve of their claws. They are also found in the Acerb Orta, and have migrated into the forests of both central Raphaelia and western Hutzlun.

The largest rackark tribes number several dozen individuals, who fiercely defend their territory. Their hunting packs are stealthy and well organised, utilising surprisingly sophisticated ambushes and distractions, and the best use of their talents in stealth and brachiation.

TRINTORTRINTORTRINTORTRINTOR Other Names:Other Names:Other Names:Other Names: Three-Clawed Killer, Triambulator, Eater of Memory.

Metier: Metier: Metier: Metier: Athletic Daemon Adventurer

Intelligent and dangerous, trintor nevertheless make excellent combat daemons and useful all-round henchmen and assistants - providing they are bound or bargained tightly.

TAXONOMYTAXONOMYTAXONOMYTAXONOMY

The trintor is a strange-looking being: A three-limbed creature standing about a meter high, with a lump central torso roughly the size of a normal man. From the front of this body a thick stubby hump protrudes, and although no visible sensory organs can be seen, it is assumed this appendage functions as a head (indeed a small coin sized sphincter underside of this mass is used for feeding). Several long semi-flexible spines flow from the back, though it is unclear as to if these provide sensory information or perform some another function.

Often used as bodyguards and combat daemons by their summoners, most trintors have a broad spread of ‘adventuring skills’ along with the physical prowess to make them much sought after... If one can manage to find some method of feeding them that is. Trintors ignore skill penalties from injury because of their 6

ranks of Endurance (other benefits already included above); attackers do not get rear or flanking bonuses against them (Rank 3 Awareness).

They require on average 5 points of RSN per day and will begin to ‘starve’ (as per the normal rules) if they go for more than 48 hours without sustenance. Furthermore their ‘food’ must come from a sentient and conscious creature with a RSN of above 15.

VIVISECTVIVISECTVIVISECTVIVISECT Not a single creature but a twisted panoply of possibilities, vivisects are born from the most dark and dangerous aspect of the kirurgeon’s art – the deliberate warping of living organisms, to create new creatures or graft together a chimerical amalgamation of beasts.

Of course, selective breeding has been done for centuries on plants and animals. The results are commonplace, from the bran (domesticated brawn) and exotic breeds of praxis or thoroughbred tether, to alchemically-impregnated grapes and the delicately tailored cephalopod-venoms enjoyed in Dromal and Nostapyrax.

For some however, careful breeding is too slow and unreliable a method. Kirurgery (see Chapter Eight) allows for the deliberate, permanent manipulation of a living body. Druids too can do it, and indeed in many places they are masters of both this art and less invasive breeding programmes. More often however, kirurgery utilises acupuncture and selective scarification to redirect the body’s energies. Surgeries are long, painful and dangerous. Only the toughest subjects survive.

For the kirurgeon however, their achievements are limited only by their imagination – and willingness to inflict prolonged pain upon the subject.

Here are three examples.

VAMPYVAMPYVAMPYVAMPYRUSCARUSCARUSCARUSCA GGGGenera:enera:enera:enera: Jurgis Métier: Métier: Métier: Métier: Agile Swarming Stinger

Altered by both selected breeding and the kirurgic arts, vampyrusca can be encountered in the wild or in the hands of doctors and alchemists, epicures and assassins.

TAXONOMYTAXONOMYTAXONOMYTAXONOMY Uma’s largest flying insect, vampyrusca are the size of a grown man’s outstretched hand, with a stinger the length of an index finger. They are living syringes and alchemical crucibles, of equal use to healer, alchemist and assassin. Even untampered with in the wild, their parasitic swarms are a danger.

Range:Range:Range:Range: Native to the Leonis Archipelago and the jungles of Uruwei. Captive specimens have been smuggled across the world however, and hives of escaped vampyrusca can sometimes be found as far north as the Dummonii forest.

In the wild, female vampyrusca harvest the blood of swamp and jungle beasts, defended by hordes of venomous males, who relentlessly defend their mates – sometimes pursuing perceived threats for over a mile.

Thanks to kirurgic tinkering, engineered specimens have many uses: Males can be redesigned to deliver a number of drugs or poisons rather than the simple venom of their wild cousins, while blood gathered by a female can be purified or infused with alchemical medicine (or other things) before being delicately re-injected by a doctor. Some varieties have even been bred as living alchemical distilleries producing small but regular amounts of potions or drugs, or tailored to produce bioluminescence, as a kind of grotesque living lantern.

CHIMAERACHIMAERACHIMAERACHIMAERA

GGGGenera:enera:enera:enera: Pelian (Hybrid)

Métier: Métier: Métier: Métier: Horrific Chimerical Savage

Victim of cruel manipulations, chimaera are as much a punishment as they are a tool. Highly illegal in every civilised land, they are fashionable only with the rich and cruel – ruthless thief lords, corrupt Dromish potentates, godfathers of the Otavo Grenni and their ilk.

Some masters promise to restore the chimaera to its original form as a reward for loyal service, but few who experience the horrors of this bestial existence ever see a human life again. Most chimaera have been driven mad to one degree or another, responding to their decent into beasthood with a mixture of crude savagery and all too recognisable human slyness.

TAXONOMYTAXONOMYTAXONOMYTAXONOMY Chimaeras are humans whose bodies have been twisted into a quadruped form, similar to a praxis, zolt or vraag, while their heads retain human features and most of their intellect. Their forepaws possess primitive opposable thumbs, allowing them to manipulate objects, although only crudely. Hampered by fangs, they cannot speak beyond howls and snarls and distorted half-words – but their eyes communicate the horror of their twisted existence all too well.

RangeRangeRangeRange: Chimaera exist only where there is a kirurgeon skilled and cruel enough to create them. Sometimes they are left to run wild and uncontrolled, their punishment merely to exist, but most are brutally trained by some powerful master: Dromish lords have been known to condemn tomb robbers to this state, leaving them to guard the family necropolis until another is caught to take their place. The more ruthless shamans of Dummonii sometimes use them as attack beasts, enslaving the losers of tribal wars or captive Pelosian soldiery. And there’s a growing fashion among the underworld of Raphaelia to have these beasts created for combat in gladiatorial pits – useful for entertainment, disposing of bodies, and as an abject lesson to other would-be rivals or traitors.

LUXLUXLUXLUXANANANAN

A Luxan is the dangerous result of indulging too heavily in magical enhancement – earthpower, alchemical potions, or kirurgery. The body tries to permanently embrace the changes, with mixed results.

The body swells in size, rippling with magical muscles or twitching with preternatural speed; skin takes on a leathery, armoured appearance; bones harden, armoured plates covering vulnerable organs. But it’s not all good news.

A brutal, often misshapen, appearance is only the mildest side effect: Luxans becomes permanently angry, impatient and impulsive; high on adrenalin, easily tipped into rage. Mental faculties atrophy - partly through lack of sleep and inability to concentrate. They find themselves constantly wanting to test their newfound strength.

But the human body lacks the necessary elements to maintain the luxan physique. Soon even regular magic cannot supply its needs. The only option is a specialised alchemical drug called findalux. Without this, the body withers, decays, and eats away at itself, causing agonising withdrawal. A luxan without a steady supply of findalux suffers fits and heart spasms, and find their flesh twisting and melting from Distortion (see Chapter Five for more on this). They fly into sudden fits of rage, and become murderously dedicated to getting more of their vital drug.

For this reason, most luxans soon find themselves serving others (sometimes outright enslaved) in order to keep a regular supply of findalux.

You can turn a normal NPC into a luxan by applying the following modifiers to their character sheet. These aren’t the only effects possible, just the typical effects. There are also luxans built for speed or toughness or with bestial traits or other specialised features.

+20 STR and CON (adds +2 DA and +2 WC)

-20 to two of mental statistics (affects RM & WC)

Natural armour equivalent to soft leather (4/3/5)

The luxan ignores wound penalties from injuries while on findalux.

Increase all major wound categories by 2pts

Add ‘luxan’ to their metier. This includes a severe addiction to findalux.

Here’s a sample luxan - a veteran female warrior (30 TP) perhaps senior guardian of a Dromish harem or personal bodyguard of some prince’s wife or courtesan. Not a lady to mess with.
