New archaeological discoveries are threat-ening, once again, to overturn the ortho-

dox timeline for human development. In Morocco scientists have found Homo

sapiens fossils dating to 315,000 years ago, pushing back the official dawn of our speciesby 100,000 years. The details reported in theprestigious peer-reviewed journal Nature inJune, could throw a ‘monkey wrench,’ so tospeak, into the African Genesis scenario reli-giously adhered to by most paleontologists. It now seems clear that the East Africanhuman episode, cited by mainstream scholars, was, if anything, a later development and notthe seminal event it has been portrayed tobe. Researchers at Jebal Irhoud inMorocco have concluded that hu-mans developed at about thesame time all across Africa, many thousands of yearsbefore the East Africanevents once believed torepresent the dawn ofthe human saga.

According to Jean-Jacques Hublin, authorof the study, and directorof the Max Planck Insti-tute for EvolutionaryAnthropology inLeipzig, Germany,“I would say the

For over a century and a half, the con-ventional Darwinian view of natural

history—going back 200 million years andmore—has been that only petrified fossilsremain to be discovered by people like us.No soft tissue, and no DNA, from thatperiod could possibly have survived untilthe present day. The suggestion promotedby the Jurassic Park movies, that DNAcould have been preserved in amber arti-facts, was dismissed by science as sheercinematic fantasy. New developments, however, may force the establishment toreconsider some of its most cherished be-liefs.

As physicist Stephen Robbins, Ph.D.,points out in his cover story for this issue“Jurassic Soft Tissue,” recently there havebeen a number of game-changing ‘impos-sible’ discoveries of dinosaur soft tissue. And, in June of 2017, a piece of amberfound in China contains a completely in-tact but extinct, baby bird which scientistssay dates from the Cretaceous period, astaggering 99 million years ago. The mostcomplete fossil of its kind ever found, thebird has feathers which would have en-abled it to f ly. It is now completely en-cased in a three-inch chunk of Burmeseamber. The bird belonged to an ancientgroup of toothed birds called Enantior-nithes, which went extinct along with thedinosaurs.

As for the implications of these dis-coveries to the established time line, itcannot be encouraging. According toRobbins, science, may be trying to finesseits way around the issues raised. As youwill see, it all makes for compelling archae-ological drama, if not a new movie.

Garden of Eden in Africa is probably Africa—and it’s a big, big garden.” Maybe even biggerthan professor Hublin suspects.

According to a study reported in May inthe journal PLOS One, fossils recently foundin Bulgaria and Greece, have convinced an in-ternational team of researchers that creaturesdating to 7.2 Million years ago are the ances-tors of modern humans, making Europe, notAfrica, the cradle of humanity. The discoveryof a creature, dubbed Graecopithecus freybergi, and nicknamed ‘El Graeco’ by scientists, proves, say the authors, that 200,000 years be-fore the earliest African hominid (not count-

ing the Jebal Irhoud discoveries) ourancestors were already starting to

evolve in Europe.One conclusion that

certainly may be drawnfrom the new research isthat, in the long tale ofhumanity on Earth, there has been plenty oftime for our forebears togo down many historicalrabbit holes and to fol-

low many timelines, developments, and, yes, even civiliza-tions, to a degree asyet unrealized by or-thodox science.

Apowerful electromagnetic pulse (EMP)would be one of the most devastating bi-

products of any nuclear explosion, renderinguseless anything electrical belonging to a so-ciety. The specter of such warfare has in-trigued many science fiction fans for years, but the dangers are anything but fictional. In“EMP Wars,” the cover story for our January/ February, 2017 issue, Atlantis Rising under-scored the subject. Now, new developmentsare making it clear that even without nukes, the EMP threat remains very real.

The U.S. Air Force, along with defensecontractors Boeing, Raytheon, and Lockheed,

The legend of Tabby’s Star, or KIC8462852, is continuing to grow, even as

the star has strangely begun to dim again. The new dimming was reported in May, andastronomers were expected to be hard at theirtelescopes, trying to come up with a plausibleexplanation. Right now, the suggestion thatwe may have stumbled upon an alien megas-tructure of some kind is as good as any other, and maybe better. No other star has ever beenreported behaving this way.

As geologist and Atlantis Rising contrib-utor Robert Schoch reported in ourMarch/April, 2017 issue (“Mega Engineeringin the Stars”), there are those who think thepeculiar, irregular dimming of the star, couldbe caused by a Dyson sphere. Enclosing a starwith an artificial structure like a giant lanternshade, to harness its energy, was proposed byBritish physicist and mathematician FreemanDyson in 1960. If it exists on Tabby’s star(named after discoverer Tabetha Boyajian) itwould be clear evidence for the existence ofan extremely advanced engineering technol-ogy by an alien society.

Elsewhere on the alien-technology front, the notorious “Wow” signal, reported by as-tronomer Jerry R. Ehman in 1977, is back inthe news. Ehman, a researcher with theSearch for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI)spotted an anomalous radio signal thatlooked artificial in nature and wrote “Wow”on his data printout. Ever since, it has beencalled the “Wow” signal. It has never been sat-isfactorily explained, but now there is a newattempt.

Antonio Paris, a professor of astronomy

at St. Petersburg College in Florida, has de-termined that two comets were passingthrough the area of the sky under observationby Ehman’s telescope, and one of them wasaccompanied by a hydrogen cloud. Paris isn’tsure how, but he thinks the comet may havecaused the “Wow” signal. He thinks it was anatural phenomenon, but he can’t rule outartificial origins.

Meanwhile, whoever the alien caller was,he didn’t leave a call-back number.

EMPWeaponized

has confirmed that they are pursuing a non-nuclear pulse weapon. Nicknamed theCounter-electronics High-powered MicrowaveAdvanced Missile Project (CHAMP), scien-tists and engineers are trying to make a systemthat could deliver an EMP pulse capable oftargeting and destroying all electrical systemsbut without the death and destruction of anuclear event. According to insiders, theCHAMP system, operating from an aircraft, such as a drone, could knock out buildingsand power grids. The tests in the Utah desert,it is said, have been going well and havedemonstrated the feasibility of the technol-ogy. On just one mission, the weapon wasable to take down several targets. Pentagonplanners appreciate CHAMP’s ability to goafter precisely chosen targets, such as anenemy’s electrical system, their access to theInternet or any other computer networks, andvirtually all of the components of life in thetwenty-first century, but without killing anypeople.

“This technology marks a new era inmodern-day warfare,” said Keith Coleman,CHAMP program manager for Boeing Phan-tom Works. “In the near future, this technol-ogy may be used to render an enemy’selectronic and data systems useless even be-fore the first troops or aircraft arrive.”

The SensationHas Died but the

Questions Linger On

In the history of paranormal phenom-ena, the Betz Sphere is without parallel.Even so, Atlantis Rising readers may beunfamiliar with it, if only because little

has been said or published about the objectover the last forty years. Since then, occa-sional arguments alternatively crediting or de-bunking this mystery have confused, ratherthan clarified, what really happened. Puttingall partisan squabbles aside, these are thefacts, incredible as they may seem: On theWednesday afternoon of March 27, 1974, An-toine Betz, a marine engineer, was joined byhis wife, Gerri, and son, Terry Mathew—a 21-year-old pre-med student—on Ft. George Is-land, several miles east of Jacksonville,Florida. They were inspecting the smolderingresult of a small brushfire that had justburned itself out across an 88-acre swathe ofwoodland near some property the family hadrecently purchased. Well timbered, with moss-draping trees and tropical scrub, Ft. Georgewas an oasis of dry ground amid the SunshineState’s northeastern marshlands.

As Terry walked through an area missed

by the f lames, he was surprised to see at hisfeet a bright, metal globe, about the size of abowling ball, sitting alone in the unscorchedgrass. While the scuffed, seamless exterior wasnot even warm, he wondered if the spheremight have nonetheless been connected withthe brushfire somehow. Perhaps it was an ar-tificial satellite or a piece of space junk thatheated up in its frictional descent throughEarth’s atmosphere before falling on Ft.George Island.

Turning the lightweight orb around inhis hands, all he found was an elongated,three-millimeter triangle stamped onto its sur-face. Antoine and Gerri agreed that the ballresembled something like Sputnik but foundno evidence of either a crater or crash in thevicinity, and the object itself gave no indica-tion of having been burned on supposed re-entry or damaged on impact. Although theytook no further interest in it, Terry broughthis find home as a curiosity piece. For almostthe next two weeks, it sat more or less forgot-ten on a window seat in his bedroom, until, one afternoon, he began playing his electricguitar for a visiting friend, Theresa Fraser. They were astounded to see and hear the

metallic ball “vibrating on its own, like a tun-ing fork,” according to Terry, while emittinga weird, throbbing sound in response to cer-tain notes he struck.

Although never before disturbed by gui-tar playing, the family dog simultaneously ev-idenced extreme distress. “When we put ourpoodle beside the ball,” Gerri told The PalmBeach Post on April 15, “she whimpers andputs her paws over her ears.” Thereafter, thesphere would occasionally, on its own, with-out the input of electric guitar music, vibrateat a low frequency, as if, Terri said, “a motorwere running inside.”

Intrigued by such strange behavior, he,his father, mother, and 12-year-old brother,Wayne, began experimenting with the orb todetermine if it possessed additional unusualproperties. They were not disappointed. Re-peatedly passing over its surface with a hand-held magnetometer, Antoine was baff led todiscover that the globe’s surface had but oneintensely magnetic spot, about the diameterof a dime. He then used an iron hammer togently tap the ball, which emitted a bell-like,“ringing” tone. These peculiarities providedno clue about its identity, so he and his fam-ily suspended further analysis until morning.

Late that night, however, they werejolted from their sleep by funereal organmusic echoing through their cavernoushome, known locally for its citadel-like con-struction. But there was no organ in “Betzcastle.” The unearthly chords eventually fadedaway, only to be replaced by even more star-tling sounds, as bedroom and bathroomdoors began slamming of their own accord. While these disembodied effects would havesent most other families packing, the mem-bers of this one, due to Antoine’s and Terry’sscientific backgrounds, were less terrorizedthan fascinated; and, determined to learn thetruth about the object.

For optimum viewing, they placed it onthe livingroom coffee table and gave thesphere a slight nudge. To everyone’s amaze-ment, the globe rolled straight to the edge ofthe glass surface, paused there a moment, then resumed its motion in reverse, stoppedagain at the opposite edge, and repeated themaneuver. Antoine replaced the sphere onthe coffee table, which he thoroughlychecked with a bubble level for its straight-ness, only to go through the same pattern ofmovement, time and again. Next, he deliber-ately slanted the table at an upward angle. The globe did not roll off, as expected, butactually began spinning on its axis, up the in-cline, utilizing its own momentum.

While his experimenting continued, henoticed that the sphere apparently respondedto area weather conditions, as though directlyaffected by solar energy. For example, the ballwas especially active on bright, sunny daysbut sluggish, almost inactive, under overcastskies. With these observations, Antoine con-

ANCIENT MYSTERIES

• BY WILLIAM B. STOECKER

Continued on Page 31

In folklore, even in the Judeo-ChristianBible, there are tales of giants in ancienttimes, human or near-human beings ofawesome size and strength, often hos-

tile, even demonic in nature. Could these ac-counts be more than fantastic legends? Couldthere once have been not just individuals(Like Goliath in the Bible) but entire races ofgigantic people?

Before we go any further, however, let usdispense with some of the more obvious mis-conceptions and hoaxes. There are stories ofgiant humans twenty or thirty feet or morein height and even Internet and printed pic-tures of human skeletons that tall. But with-out exception these skeletons have about thesame proportions and thickness as ordinaryhuman bones. Most people give little thoughtto simple geometry, which places limits onsize. Imagine a six-foot-tall man weighing, say,180 pounds. Now imagine that his height isdoubled to twelve feet, but his proportionsremain the same; so he is twice as tall, twiceas wide, and twice as deep from front to back. His volume and weight have increased by thecube of his dimensions’ increase, so he wouldweigh about eight times as much, or some1,440 pounds. But his strength and durabilitydepend on the cross-sectional area of his mus-cles and bones, now only four times asmuch—he is eight times as heavy but onlyfour times as strong. Merely walking wouldbe difficult; such people would be unlikelyto survive. This is why truly large land animalslike dinosaurs and elephants are proportion-ately heavily built, with extremely thick bonesand muscles. A twelve-foot man, to be fit andhealthy, would also have to be very massivelybuilt, weighing on the order of 2,500 poundsor more.

But that is not the only problem. Topump blood up to the brain, such a person’sheart would have to be extremely large andhis blood pressure dangerously high. Adultmale giraffes can be 14-18 feet tall, and theirhearts weigh up to 25 pounds or more, gen-erating twice the blood pressure generated bya human heart. Giraffes have special valvesand veins to regulate blood flow. It is obviousthat for a man to be even 14 feet tall, hewould have to be massively, freakishly builtand would need a specialized circulatory sys-tem. Probably the absolute theoretical heightlimit for a human being would be well undertwenty feet, and it is unlikely that peoplemuch over twelve feet tall ever lived.

Most modern giants suffer from excessgrowth hormone and tend to be unhealthyand short lived, but not always. The tallestman on record, Robert Wadlow of the U.S.,was 8 ft. 11 in. tall and lived only 22 years, from 1918 to 1940. The tallest woman isChina’s 8 ft., 1 in. Zeng Jinian; she is still alive

but is quite young. Yet some giants have beenstrongly built, even becoming athletes. Anynumber of modern basketball players arenearly or even slightly over seven feet inheight. The French Canadian strongman andwrestler, Edouard Beaupre, was 8 ft. 3 in. tallbut lived only 23 years, from 1881 to 1904.Argentine wrestler Jorge Gonzalez was sevenfeet, seven inches tall. The wrestler Andre theGiant was 7 ft. 4 in. and weighed 520pounds;but, like most giants, he suffered fromacromegaly, with his pituitary gland continu-ing to produce too much growth hormone

even in his adult years. This causes the hands, feet, and jaw to grow disproportionately largeand brings on a variety of health problems.

Entire modern tribes and ethnic groupscan be extraordinarily short, like the IturiRain Forest Pygmies of Africa. Others are un-usually tall, like the Watusi tribe of EastAfrica; many of the men are up to seven feettall. In Europe, the Dutch are tall and usuallywell-proportioned, and the Montenegrins inthe mountainous areas of the Balkan Penin-sula are taller still, with many men well oversix feet tall, and some over seven feet, andmany women are over six feet. So it is quitepossible that, in ancient or prehistoric times, there were entire tribes or nations of giants. But is there evidence of this?

Physical anthropologists have (they be-lieve) identified a species of prehistoric manthey have named Homo heidelbergensis, or Hei-

delberg Man. I have suggested elsewhere thatsome prehistoric human “species” may simplybe different races but the same species asmodern man. To support neo-Darwinism, sci-entists had to “discover” supposedly primitivespecies, ancestral to us and related to otherprimates. Even the anthropologists admit thatthey cannot always be sure if a specimen isHeidelberg Man, Homo erectus, or NeanderthalMan. Heidelberg people tended to be mas-sively built and had an average brain size of1,250 cubic centimeters compared to modernman’s 1,400 cubic centimeter average. Most

were no taller than modern people, but an-thropologists believe that they have identifieda South African subgroup with men oftenover seven feet tall. So, within limits, it doesappear that actual races of giants have lived.

There are rumors of giant human re-mains in places as diverse as Sardinia in theMediterranean and Nan Madol in the south-west Pacific, but most of the confirmed spec-imens come from the Americas. Many ofthese were found and reported by scientistswith good reputations, and others, found bylaymen, were sent to museums or later exam-ined on site by reputable researchers—and thenumber of these remains is staggering. This isall the more mysterious when we rememberthat, on average, Amerindians (and especiallythose in Mexico and in Central and South

ANCIENT TECHNOLOGY

On the Pacific coast of Guatemala, not far from Santa Lucia Cotzu-malguapa, the clearing work donein 1860 brought some magnifi-

cent Mayan steles to light (today, they areknown as the Bilbao monuments). The nativepopulation did not think much of it, becausefarmers repeatedly would encounter carvedstones. News of the discovery reached theAustrian Dr. Habel, who explored the regionin 1862, and had drawings made of the steles. He later showed them in Berlin to the direc-tor of the Ethnological Museum of Berlin atthe time, Dr. Adolf Bastian (1826–1905). Hewas enthusiastic and wanted to install the ste-les in his museum, and he traveled to SantaLucia Cotzumalguapa in 1876. There, hebought the steles from the owner of the finca(farm) and contractually secured the rights toany future discoveries. But the trip fromGuatemala to Berlin was arduous.

In the jungle terrain of Santa LuciaCotzumalguapa, there were neither f latbedwagons nor paved roads. A hastily summonedengineer suggested cutting the steles in halflengthwise and hollowing out the back sides. So it happened. The behemoths were loadedon oxcarts and transported up to 80 kilome-ters (50 mi.) to the San José harbor. Whenloading them on the ship there was anotherhitch: One stele broke loose from its ropesand sank to the bottom of the harbor—where

it lies to this day.The remaining eight steles were erected

in Berlin and can still be admired at the en-trance to the local ethnological museum. Onestele obviously shows an offering scene witha priest, who is holding a ripped-out heart tothe heavens. In the next image, a prieststretches something upward that looks like aface mask. Above him a godly being, sur-rounded by flames, descends toward the earth(figure 1). The next image shows a figure en-gulfed in f lames from the head downward. Infront of its chest dangles a fire disc, and there, where the feet should be, rudiments of wingsare recognizable...

Because of so-called professional litera-ture and our goal-oriented education, we areblind in one eye. We accept what is offeredin clever books and on the Internet, and wedo not notice how we repress understanding. With that I am not stating that my approachis the only correct one. But the interpretationup until now is not exactly the final word.

I saw a similar case of misunderstoodtechnology in the statues of Tula, a place 70kilometers (44 mi.) northwest of Mexico City. The figures—also known as Atlanteans, what-ever that means—stand atop a pyramid-shapedplatform (Figures 2 and 3). They carry boxeson their chests, and even the harnesses overtheir shoulders are recognizable (Figure 4,page 63). With two fingers, they clasp objectsthat look like drills and taper downward. Halfof a spoked wheel is also recognizable ontheir shoes.

The experts’ interpretation is completelydifferent. The boxes on their chests are “but-terf ly symbols,” the things in their hands are“a bundle of arrows” or “spinning devices,”and the wheels on their shoes are supposedly“f lowers.” Then the covered ears could be—who knew it?—original headphones with ashort antenna. Finally, the headdress in theeyes of the experts is a “box-shaped hat.”Some of the Tula statues are even furnishedon the backside with engravings. There standsan Indian adorned with a feathered helmetwith a hose through the nose and a figure insquatting position. From head to back, a hoseruns into a tank. One can compare this withthe stele of El Baúl.

If the items of evidence are not an indi-vidual case, if they are seemingly waving fromeverywhere, if we are speaking about themythology of “descended gods” and “teach-ers,” if Teotihuacán turned out to be themodel of the solar system and the Kukulkan

ALTERNATIVE SCIENCE

• BY BRENDAN D. MURPHY

Continued on Page 37

In his excellent book The Holographic Uni-verse, the late American physicistMichael Talbot recorded some fascinat-ing clairvoyant observations. For exam-

ple, once during a reading, American “humanenergy field consultant” Carol Dryer saw abunch of potatoes whirling around awoman’s head. She was at first dumbfoundedbut summoned her courage and asked if po-tatoes had any special meaning for her. As itturned out, the woman was from the IdahoPotato Board, or something roughly equiva-lent. In other words, potatoes were a very sig-nificant and meaningful part of her life.

Such images don’t always just hoveraround the person in their aura but some-times appear as extensions of the body orproximal layer of the auric field—a fact not sosurprising when we consider some of the ev-idence in my book The Grand Illusion.

Another of Dryer’s clients had a holo-gram-like layer of mud clinging to her handsand arms. This baffled Dryer, given thewoman’s immaculate presentation, so sheasked if the woman could understand theimage. Affirmative: she was a sculptor and thenew medium she tested out that morning didindeed cling to her arms and hands just asDryer described. (Talbot, Michael. The Holo-graphic Universe, HarperCollins, 1996, p 180)

Psychics of Dryer’s advanced abilities (ofwhich there appear to be comparatively few)

are also able to see movie-like sequences play-ing in people’s energy fields. The most emo-tionally powerful memories or preciousthoughts manifest in this fashion. Likewise, illness can also be detected by psychics suchas Dryer and Brennan, a notion with consid-erable scientific support now.

Jay Alfred explains that our holographicdark plasma/subtle bodies generate and proj-ect holographic images in real-time in re-sponse to thoughts and feelings. The uniqueproperties of “magnetic plasma” fields—whichcan be reorganized or “shape-shifted” by thewill—provide these fields with all the compo-nents needed to build a “holographic ma-chine.” (Brendan Murphy, The Grand Illusion– Book 1, Balboa Press, 2012)

Gravitational lensing—the way lightbends as it passes through a gravitationalfield— also plays a role in generating imagesin our mind’s eye, according to Jay Alfred.Leadbeater claimed in The Inner Life that an“atom” allows us to view images originatingin our higher vehicles. Tackling this statementalmost a century later—with gravitational lens-ing long since a well established scientificphenomenon—Alfred proposes that a physi-cal-etheric atom uses gravitational lensing tofocus multidimensional images generatedfrom higher vehicles to a place in front of oureyes as 3D images (Alfred, Jay, Our InvisibleBodies: Scientific Evidence for Subtle Bodies. Traf-ford Publishing, 2005, p 97.). Thus, we expe-rience thoughts not in the brain but in oursubtle bodies via the brain. In point of fact,

outstanding clairvoyant and theosophistDora Kunz has explained that to clairvoyantsight, visualization uses the power of thebrow/ third eye chakra, speeding its rotationand also affecting the crown chakra (Karag-ulla, Shafica & Dora Van Gelder Kunz, TheChakras and the Human Energy Fields, QuestBooks, 1998, p 169).

In the yogic systems thought-forms arereferred to as pratyaya: the content of themind functioning through a particular vehicle(or what I sometimes refer to as a “torsion-plasma body”). For someone in the ordinarywaking state working through their mentalbody, the pratyaya in their case will be themental image in their mind. Anyone withclairvoyance operating at the appropriatelevel can see this mental image and gainknowledge of that mind (“mind reading”).Functioning in this way, the seer is able to de-tect form but not necessarily the intent oremotion that caused the form. That is whyeven the best clairvoyants will often conductreadings in a question-based format. Hence,Dryer asked one client, despite her reluctance,if potatoes had any special significance forher.

Powell explained in occult terms that athought-form is a kind of living entity of highenergy which is animated by the idea thatspawned it. The finer the matter it is com-posed of, the greater the energy and power itpossesses (Taimni, I.K., The Science of Yoga: The

The study appeared in theJan. 31, 2017 issue of the journalNature Communications, and thenews is already making headlinesaround the world.

“These dinosaur proteins aremore than 100 million yearsolder than anything previouslydiscovered,” says ProfessorRobert Reisz, a specialist in ver-tebrate paleontology in the de-partment of biology at U of TMississauga. “These proteins arethe building blocks of animalsoft tissues, and it’s exciting tounderstand how they have beenpreserved.”

The Canada-Taiwan researchteam, led by Reisz, used the syn-chrotron at the Taiwanese Na-tional Synchrotron RadiationResearch Center to find the sub-stance in place, known as colla-gen type I, preserved within thetiny vascular canals of the ribwhere blood vessels and bloodwould be in the living dinosaur.

The collagen was found to-gether with lots of small, spheri-cal, hematite particles. Hematiteis a mineral that can be formedfrom the iron in hemoglobin, theoxygen-transport protein in redblood cells. The chemical bondbetween iron and oxygen is whatgives blood cells their red color.

Reisz and his colleagues be-lieve that these hematite particleswere derived from the originalblood of the dinosaur and that

they acted as the catalyst for pre-serving the protein in the vascu-lar canals of the bone. Thesecollagen pieces are probably rem-nants of the blood vessels thatsupplied blood to the bone cellsin the living dinosaur.

“Interestingly, there was noevidence of preservation of or-ganic remains in the main massof the bone, only in the smallvascular canals that ran along thelength of the rib, where hematitewas also present” says Reisz.

“Our localized search, inareas of the bone that are likelyto preserve remnants of the orig-inal soft tissues, is more likely tosucceed than previously usedmethods. This approach hasgreat future potential, because lo-calized searches will yield impor-tant results even when theamount of organic remains isminiscule.”

Previous evidence of pre-served collagen date back to theLate Cretaceous Period—morethan 100 million years youngerthan this discovery—but thosestudies extracted the organic re-mains by dissolving away allother parts of the fossil, withouta clear understanding of the pre-cise origins of the collagen.

This research allowed thescientists to find the collagen inplace without dissolving the restof the fossil,  and it has helpedthem understand how the or-ganic remains were preserved.Reisz believes that future explo-rations for even older proteinswill be possible if this techniqueis used.

Who knew? Howcould we haveknown that di-nosaurs were such

saintly beings? St. Bernadette, St.Silvan, stand aside (see “The Mys-terious Gifts of the Saints” AR#124). The Church of OrthodoxScience has declared the bodiesof the clearly holy dinosaurs tobe, well, incorrupt. Well, almost, but hey, 199.5 million years ofpreservation for even a saint’sbody isn’t all that bad. Pilgrim-ages are being organized.

As the canonizations pro-ceed, an amazing sleight of handis also whisking before our eyes.Three years ago (AR #106), I de-scribed a crisis raging full forcearound the subject of the actualage of dinosaur remains, therebyequally implying a crisis in ourhistorical understanding; namely, just when did the dinosaurs actu-ally perish? Was it really 65 mil-lion or even 200 million yearsago, or was it within the effectiverange of carbon dating; i.e.,50,000 years, 25,000 years ago, orless? The crisis stems from thediscovery—with now apparentgreat frequency—of organic mat-ter within and without the bonesof these dinosaurs. In turn, thisfoundational narrative support-ing the long ages required forDarwinian evolution—the longand ancient history of the di-nosaurs—stands in jeopardy. Forcurrent science, this threat of amassive overturning is very real. And very disturbing.

The experts whose provinceactually is the subject of organicmatter longevity—the molecularbiologists and biochemists—as-sert, based on both theoreticalstructure and extensive repeatedexperimentation, that the maxi-mum longevity of protein is100,000 years. Simply the natural, inexorable, structure-breakdownprocess of the law of entropy inmatter assures this. These bio-chemistry-established decay rateshave yet to be disproven. Yet wehave organic materials—bloodvessels, osteocytes (tiny bonecells)—found within the bones ofdinos, which, based on highguesswork, even on circularly rea-soned estimations on the age ofthe geological stratum in whichthe bones are found (see AR#70), are stated to be from theCretaceous (68 million, 80 mil-lion years old) and even from the

Jurassic (199.5 million years old).Dr. Mary Schweitzer, in

2005, was the first official pub-lisher/defender of this organicmaterial discovery, in this case, organic matter found in the thighbone of a mama T-Rex suppos-edly 65 million years old. I saythe “first publisher,” because, itturns out, she was far from thefirst discoverer. This phenome-non has been known (and nottalked about) for years.Schweitzer, however, also becamethe chief theoretician for “ex-plaining” this miracle. Mixing os-trich and chicken blood vesselsin an iron-rich solution, she wasable to extend the life of thesevessels by 200X, where they yetwere in a (vaguely described) “rec-ognizable” condition; i.e., withsome (unspecified) degree of pre-served structure. More specifi-cally, from an expected 3.5 days, she achieved 720 days. That theexperiment employed utterly ar-tif icial conditions is ignored. That her preservative mechanismis orders of magnitude short ofpower, for she requires not 200X,but 20,000,000,000X to accountfor 199.5 million years—also ig-nored. But more on this later.

The New NormalSo, what has happened

since? Firstly, the Schweitzer “ex-planation” is still the “go to” ex-planation—unquestioned. But itis worse. The miraculous preser-vation of organic matter in re-mains supposedly many tens ofmillions of years old is now beingpassed off as simply “normal.”Consider, for example, a January,2017 piece in the Christian ScienceMonitor discussing a recentlypublished article by Dr. RobertReisz (in Nature Communications)on the discovery of collagen in adenizen of the Jurassic, a 195-mil-lion-year-old Lufengosaurus in

China (see sidebar). The articlequotes Dr. Stephen Brusatte, apaleontologist at University ofEdinburgh: “It wouldn’t surpriseme if this type of preservation ismuch more common than wemight think…This realizationcould be a game changer for pa-leontologists and will give us newways to study dinosaurs that wenever before imagined.” Andthen the kicker: “Dr. Brusattesees Reisz’s work as key supportfor Schweitzer’s controversial re-search. Taken together, he says, this kind of research ‘tells us thatsoft tissues and microscopic tissuesmay be able to be preserved for a hugeswath of time—hundreds of millionsof years.’”

This is just one, typical ex-ample of the new tone of discus-sion. Biochemistry, go away. Poortroglodyte molecular biologistsand biochemists. Proteinlongevity 100k years? Howquaint. And long live the Darwin-ian story.

Schweitzer’s Magical MysteryMechanism

Let’s look a bit more at Dr.Schweitzer’s born-in-2013, nowtrusty “go-to” explanation, thatis, at her own sleight of hand. Itis interesting to note, firstly, thatthe paper trots out the same Ms.T-Rex bone that had now beenresting in Schweitzer’s lab foreight years. A microscope pictureshows the iron particles (Fe) clus-tered tightly around the bloodvessels, in her words, “infiltratingan organic layer.” But eight yearsin a nice dry lab, complete withhandling, possible reagents, etc.,is not eight years at Hell Creek,

Montana, where the soil is in-deed known for containing mois-ture.

And iron particles lovemoisture. This love leads to form-ing iron oxide—a form of rust.Mark Armitage, a microscopy ex-pert, discoverer of a number offossils at Hell Creek, and firedfrom his lab-head position at CalState for publishing in a peer re-viewed journal on the subject ofdinosaur soft tissue preservation, points out the following: It isquite possible that in actuality, while at Hell Creek, surroundedby moisture, the situation withinthe T-Rex thigh was relative stasis.Take the bone out and put it ina dry place. The matrix begins todry out. Where do the iron par-ticles go? Why, to the last sourceof moisture, namely to the wallsof blood vessels. Can Schweitzerrule this out? Did she? No andno.

So let’s look again at that“go-to” experiment that demon-strated that “iron has a role” in

ALTERNATIVE ARCHAEOLOGY

• BY ROBERT M. SCHOCH, Ph.D.

Recently my wife, Katie, and I trav-eled to India for the first time(April 2017), excited to visit this an-cient land of mysteries. As a geolo-

gist, I had a particular interest in seeing thecountry’s magnificent caves and temples, from the Ajanta and Ellora structures cutdeep into the bedrock near Aurangabad, tothe ornate and towering edifices of Khaju-raho.

The Ellora and Ajanta complexes werecarved out of the solid living bedrock com-posed of ancient basalts, a prodigious feat. The Ajanta “caves” are a series of man-maderecesses, some 29 in number, located high inthe cliffs along a horseshoe bend in theWaghora River, downstream from an ancientwaterfall (when we visited, the river was dry). The complex was discovered in 1819 by theEnglishman John Smith; by the end of thenineteenth century it had become a populartourist destination. According to the standardstory, the Ajanta caves were the work of Bud-dhist monks occupying the site from aroundthe second century BCE to the sixth centuryCE, after which, activity shifted to Ellora, andAjanta was ultimately abandoned and forgot-ten.

Ellora consists of 34 caves and struc-tures, all of which, like Ajanta, are carvedfrom the basalt bedrock. Although most are“caves” (structures recessed in natural rockcliffs), there is also the absolutely amazingKailasa Temple that, while carved from thebedrock, is not a cave but an actual free-

standing structure approximately 200 feetlong, 100 feet wide, and nearly 100 feet tall.At Ellora there are not just Buddhist templesand caves but also Hindu and Jain structures.By the standard chronologies, the caves at El-lora span the period from about the sevenththrough eleventh centuries CE, with theKailasa Temple dated to the middle of theeighth century.

The structures in India are not caves ina natural sense, but, rather, rock mansionswith palace-like interiors; some have multiplestories. An extraordinary amount of time andenergy went into carving and decorating these“caves”, which boast incredible façades, intri-cate sculptures and reliefs, and technicallyoutstanding wall and ceiling paintings. Theyare India’s version of Petra (Jordan)—and com-parable to the engineering feats of Cappado-cia (Turkey), where dwellings and even entireunderground cities were carved out of thebedrock.

The basalts of Ajanta and Ellora, how-ever, are even harder and more difficult tocarve than the volcanic bedrock, consistingof congealed volcanic ash (tuff), that was pri-marily used for the underground structuresof Cappadocia. Adding to the mystery ofAjanta and Ellora, they are said to be prima-rily the work of monks, but when havemonks ever been connected to such amazingfeats of construction? Where are the recordsor remnants of their technology? These“caves” were not cut into the bedrock usingjust simple tools and the “chip-chip” method;this is mind-boggling engineering. Monks aretypically known for possessing nothing otherthan their faith.

Like many ancient sites around theworld, the temples and caves at both Ajantaand Ellora show evidence of use, reworking, and reuse over a considerable period of time. This is not denied by standard archaeologistsand historians, but I wonder just how farback the original structures might date. Andwhy were they originally built?

Curiously, more than a dozen caves ap-pear rough-hewn, lacking fine carvings andother details. According to the standard story, these were left unfinished and abandoned. But by my way of thinking, it does not makesense to start carving out a cave, only to aban-don it, then start another one, only to aban-don it, and to continue such an apparentlyneedless task over a dozen times. Katie and Ihad to wonder if there wasn’t something elsegoing on here. Were the supposedly unfin-
