ORDER OF WORSHIP October 3, 2021 – 9:00 a.m./10:30 a.m. Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost Theme: The Cross - A Matter of Life and Death As We Gather “I simply argue that the cross be raised again, at the centre of the marketplace as well as on the steeple of the church. I am recovering the claim that Jesus was not crucified in a cathedral between two candles but on a cross between two thieves; on a town garbage heap; at a crossroad of politics so cosmopolitan that they had to write His title in Hebrew and in Latin and in Greek…and at the kind of place where cynics talk smut, and thieves curse, and soldiers gamble. Because that is where He died, and that is what He died about. And that is where Christ’s own ought to be, and that is what church people ought to be about.” ~George Macleod 1895-1991 Scotland Prayer Before Worship Lord, at times I realize that I have become too familiar with the story of Good Friday and Easter morning without taking to heart the deep and significant meaning of the cross, without fully coming to terms with what it must have meant to the Father to send His only begotten Son to die on a cross, for a rebellious race of fallen sinners, and what it fully must have meant to You, Lord Jesus to be despised and rejected by those You created and to be mocked and nailed to a cross, with men taunting and blaspheming the One, who in love had come to rescue them from eternal separation for the Father. Give me I pray, a deeper and fuller understanding of what the cruel cross at Golgotha cost the Godhead, so that sinners such as I might be saved by grace through faith. Prayer Before WorshipLord, at times I realize that I have become too familiar with the story of Good Friday and Easter morning without taking to heart the deep and significant meaning of the cross, without fully coming to terms with what it must have meant to the Father to send His only begotten Son to die on a cross, for a rebellious race of fallen sinners, and what it fully must have meant to You, Lord Jesus to be despised and rejected by those You created and to be mocked and nailed to a cross, with men taunting and blaspheming the One, who in love had come to rescue them from eternal separation for the Father. 1. Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus going on before. Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe; Forward into battle see His banners go! Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus going on before.

2. Like a mighty army moves the Church of God; Brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod. We are not divided, all one body we, One in hope and doctrine, one in charity. Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus going on before.

3. Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise and wane But the Church of Jesus constant will remain. Gates of hell can never ‘gainst that Church prevail; We have Christ’s own promise, and that cannot fail. Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus going on before.

The Symbol of the White Cross The Symbol of the White Cross (“Plant” a Cross and Proclaim your Faith) (“Plant” a Cross and Proclaim your Faith)

When driving through Frankenmuth, Michigan people are intrigued with the many small crosses in the front yards of the homes they pass. Those crosses are a statement of support for Frankenmuth’s Christian heritage.

Years ago, an atheist living there complained about two crosses on a bridge in town. He suggested they be removed and the town removed them. That success emboldened him to request that the cross on the city shield be removed.

At that point, the residents decided they had had enough. Hundreds of residents expressed their feelings by placing white crosses in their front yards. Seeing this quiet but powerful statement caused the man to with-draw his complaint.

Many Christians all over the country have now adopted this symbol. This white cross is a quiet, non-confrontational witness to our faith in Christ as our Savior and Lord even in the face of pressure not to do so.

There are many who say the values we as Christians bring to our society are outdated and actually have no value. They are doing everything they can to minimize them. But, I believe, the more they minimize and elimi-nate them, the more damage they do to that society.

If you would like to make a simple quiet statement about your faith in Christ, about the positive message Christ brings to our society and the importance of our right to proclaim that message, put a white cross in your front yard or garden for all to see.

People are boldly bringing lawsuits that result in the removal of crosses from the “public square” but they cannot make us remove our cross from our front yard or garden.

While most Christians are not aggressive activists, many of them would like to fi nd a way to share their faith in Christ. So, take a cross and “plant” it. Or take more than one and give it to a friend or relative.
