Service of ProclamationThe Wisdom of Zoroaster: “That which is good for all and any one,For whomsoever- that is good for me. . .What I hold good for self, I should for all. Only Law Universal is true law.”

In these human words, God’s voice is heard. Thanks be to God.

Please rise as you are able.

The Gospel According to Matthew (2.1-15):Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea during the time

when Herod was king. After Jesus was born, some magi from the east came to Jerusalem. They asked, “Where is the baby who was born to be the king of the Jewish People? We saw his star in the east. We came to honor him.”

When King Herod heard about this new king…he was troubled. And all the people in Jerusalem were worried too. Herod called a meeting of all the leading priests and teachers of the law. He asked them where the Christ would be born. They answered, “In the town of Bethlehem in Judea. The prophet [Micah] wrote about this…:

‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, you are important among the rulers of Judah. A ruler will come from you. He will be like a shepherd for my people, the Israelites.’”

Then Herod had a secret meeting with the magi from the east. He learned from them the exact time they fi rst saw the star. Then Herod sent [them] to Bethlehem. He said to them, “Go and look carefully to fi nd the child. When you fi nd him, come tell me. Then I can go honor him too.”

The magi heard the king and then left. They saw the same star they had seen in the east. It went before them until it stopped above the place where the child was. When the magi saw the star, they were fi lled with joy. They went to the house where the child was and saw him with his mother, Mary. They bowed down [before] the child. They opened the gifts they brought for him. They gave him treasures of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. But God warned [them] in a dream not to go back to Herod. So they went home to their own country by a diff erent way. Then, an angel of the Lord came to Joseph in a dream. The angel said, “Get up!

Take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Herod will start looking for the child to kill him. Stay in Egypt until I tell you to return.”

So Joseph got up and left for Egypt during the night with the child and his mother. Joseph stayed in Egypt until Herod died…

In these human words, God’s voice is heard. Thanks be to God.

Invitation to CommunionCommunion Song

As We Gather at Your TableAs we gather at your table, as we listen to your word, help us know, O God, your presence; let our hearts and minds be stirred.Nourish us with sacred story till we claim it as our own; teach us through this holy banquet how to make Love’s victory known.

Gracious Spirit, help us summon other guests to share that feast where triumphant Love will welcome those who had been last and least. There no more will envy bind us nor will pride our peace destroy, as we join with saints and angels to repeat the sounding joy.

A E – “Epiphany…means ‘manifestation’ or ‘showing forth’…Epiphany [can refer] not only to the day itself but to the church season that follows it – a season that has a varied length because it ends when Lent begins, and this depends on the date of Easter.

Epiphany commemorates the… Magi visiting the infant Jesus in Bethlehem…

Epiphany is one of the oldest Christian feasts. It was celebrated since the end of the second century, before the Christmas holiday was established. Like other Christian seasons, the church appropriated Epiphany from an old pagan festival. As early as 1996 BCE, the Egyptians celebrated the winter solstice (which then occurred on January 6) with a tribute to Aeon, the Virgin. It is important to note that the holiday was established prior to the Gregorian calendar’s introduction.” (TimeandDate.com)

R Y F C - We are starting 2019 highly motivated to reach more people with the power of hope, the celebration of the sacred value of all people, the assurance of God’s all-inclusive and unconditional love, and with the affi rmation that the gospel calls us to work for justice for all. We want to build community, strengthen connections, inspire devotion, give people resources for spiritual growth, minister to physical needs, and in all things glorify the omnipresent Spirit of Love.

To do all that we hope to do, we need every member and faithful friend of Sunshine Cathedral to renew their commitment of supporting the ministries of Sunshine Cathedral with time, talent, and treasure.

You will be asked to make a generous pledge of support this year, and we hope that you will joyfully make that pledge and faithfully honor it so that we can be God’s love in action in a hurting world. Thank you for your commitment.

C S C F S P ! - Two years ago, Sunshine Cathedral began a Brown Bag Lunch Program in which a small bag of non-perishable food items would be off ered to those who need a supplemental meal. In that time, this ministry outreach has grown to the point that over 200 bags are now created and distributed every week by a dedicated team of volunteers….over 9,100 bags during 2018!!

AND in November 2018, Sunshine Cathedral became a Partner Agency with Feeding South Florida which will help to off set some food costs and will allow Sunshine Cathedral to take another step in helping those who are food insecure. The Sunshine Cathedral Food Pantry opened on Wednesday, January 2 providing grocery bags to anyone who requests. No questions, no judgment.

AND in December 2018, the Sunshine Cathedral Food Sharing Program was awarded a $7,500 grant from Our Fund so that we can continue to build our Food Sharing outreach! All of this in just two years!

Thank you to all who support Sunshine Cathedral’s Food Sharing Program by donating food to the Loaves and Fishes ministry. Thank you to those who donated money and/or

P S - B M (A message by Dr. Keith D. Muller, Sunshine Cathedral Foundation Chair) - Many of our property needs are met because of members of our Pillars Society who upon their death remembered the Cathedral and its Foundation in their wills and life estates, including life insurance policies. We will always remember them.

We must remain vigilant for future needs. Our campus and buildings are not new. We can anticipate needs arising in the areas of plumbing, roofs, electrical, parking lot, technology, and other areas. In addition, as you know our church leaders have their eyes on future growth needs so that we can expand our outreach to more people.Equally important is the need to recognize the heavy use of our campus and buildings by multiple community groups and organizations. This level of use will take a toll on our property. Maintenance requires funds.

Please consider completing the necessary paperwork to become a Pillar and let us know if you have remembered the church or foundation in your wills, IRAs, insurance policies or simply in your life estates. No gift is too small. For answers to any questions about becoming a member of our Pillars Society please talk with me or any member of the Board of Governors. Or email me at [email protected]. Happy New Year!

January 6: The Magi—“Epiphany” is the day traditionally associated with the arrival of the Magi to visit the child Jesus.

January 7: Alethea Brooks Small (1848 – 1906) – sister

of Nona Brooks and Fannie Brooks James (early pioneers in the Divine Science movement). She encouraged Nona in her early leadership of Divine Science. Her husband was a business partner of Charles Fillmore before Charles & Myrtle founded Silent Unity.

J S M - Below is a chart to show what various percentages of diff erent incomes are. For instance, someone who gives $5 a week is giving 2% of a $13,000 income. Someone who gives $240 per week is giving 10% of a $125,000 income. By increasing our generosity (or by becoming more consistent with what we do, for example, by giving even when we aren’t able to physically attend worship), we can each make a big diff erence in the life and health of the Sunshine Cathedral.

If all of us who call Sunshine Cathedral our spiritual home would give 10% of our net income to the church, the church would have no unmet needs. If all of us who call Sunshine Cathedral our spiritual home would give 5% of our net income plus 50 hours per year in volunteer service, we could maintain our current level of health indefi nitely. If we currently give less than 5% of our net income to the church, there are some things we can do to give a bit more and help secure the church’s future:

1. Figure out what we percentage of our income we currently give.

2. Increase that by at least 1% (if we are giving 3% of our income, increase it to 4%, etc.)

3. Make it a clear intention to increase our giving over time until we are consistently giving over 7% of our net income to our spiritual home.

4. Become familiar with Easy Tithe and/or Text to Donate so that we can give our weekly, biweekly, or monthly gifts year round whether we are physically present or not.

5. Pray for our church daily asking God to bless our gifts of time, talent, and treasure.Of course, planned giving (leaving funds to the church

as part of our estate planning) and fundraisers and facilities usage fees all help support the church (and make much of our ministry possible), but the primary source of support for our church should be our regular gifts of time, talent, and treasure. Your faithful, monetary contributions are essential. Thank you for your generous support of this “diff erent kind of church”!
