HAB report due Septem- ber 30 Quality and Patient Safety Roadmap Meeting & AHA Forum Highlights! Your OAHHS quality team, along with several Oregon hospital representatives, recently attended the Quality and Patient Safety Roadmap meeting and the AHA Forum in San Diego. These meetings brought together healthcare leaders from across the country to share best practices and to hear from knowledgeable and influential figures about leadership, innovation and strategy. Quality and Patient Safety Roadmap Meeting: Several panel discussions centered around Patient and Family advisors as well as the development of patient/family advisory councils. Beverly Johnson from the Institute for Patient and Family Centered Care quoted Jim Henderson, former President and CEO of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital who said “Get started before you are ready”. With regards to Patient and Family engagement, this message is especially accurate—start involving patients and families now, and fine tune your processes as you go along. Don’t let perfect stand in the way of good; get started now! The importance of hospitals becoming High Reliability Organizations (HRO) was also a key topic of the Quality and Patient Safety Roadmap Meeting. There are three main requirements for hospitals to succeed: 1)Leadership commitment to the goal of high reliability, 2)Culture that supports high reliability must be implemented and 3) Process improvement tools must include: timely measurement, management based on the measures, and make it easy for everyone to do the right thing. AHA Forum: Keynote presentations were delivered by Robert Gates, former Secretary of Defense, Adrian Slywotzky, Malcolm Gladwell, Peyton Manning, Michael Murphy and Dr. Benjamin Carson. They all spoke about leadership; a few key takeaways included maintaining a sense of urgency for patient safety, find a way to be creative and move forward, excellence never happens by chance, and continue to learn from others. Teamwork was an underlying theme across all of the presenters. Next year’s AHA Forum will be held in San Francisco on July 23-25, 2015. New Resource Available: Eliminating Harm, Improving Patient Care: A Trustee Guide We are pleased to share this new resources with you and encourage you to share it with your hospitals and Boards. The American Hospital Association, in partnership with the Center for Healthcare Governance, the Health Research & Educational Trust, and Trustee magazine have developed a new resource, Eliminating Harm, Improving Patient Care: A Trustee Guide. This document is a tool for Trustees to use towards eliminating all patient harm within their organization.
