ODFW AQUATIC INVENTORY PROJECT STREAM REPORT STREAM: Panther Creek BASIN: West Fork Cow Creek / South Umpqua River DATES: July 18 – 26, 2011 SURVEY CREW: Andrew Walch / Travis Neal REPORT PREPARED BY: Staci Stein STREAM ORDER: 3 BASIN AREA: 13.3 km 2 FIRST ORDER TRIBUTARIES: 3 USGS MAPS: Dutchman Butte ECOREGION: Coast Range Klamath Siskiyou HUC NUMBER: 17100302 LLID: 1237528428470 GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Panther Creek habitat survey started at the confluence with West Fork Cow Creek and continued upstream 4322 meters ending at a small unnamed tributary junction. The stream channel was constrained by hillslopes in a narrow moderate V-shaped valley. Land uses were large trees and young timber. The stream substrate was a combination of gravel (36%), fine sediments (24%), cobble (22%), and boulder (14%). Stream habitats were scour pools (40%), riffles (20%), rapids (20%), and cascades (14%). Large wood debris volume was moderate averaging 40m 3 /100m stream reach length. Bank undercut averaged 9.5% of the stream length and active bank erosion averaged 4.5%. The trees found most frequently in the riparian zones were hardwoods 3-15cm dbh and conifers 3-30cm dbh (based on ten riparian transects). REACH DESCRIPTIONS: Reach 1: (T31S-R09W-S22SW) Length 3158 meters. Reach 1 began at the confluence with West Fork Cow Creek and ended at a major unnamed tributary junction. There were 215 meters of secondary channel habitat. The channel was constrained by hillslopes in a moderate V- shaped narrow valley. The average valley width index was 1.6 (range: 1.0-4.0). Land uses were large trees and young timber. The average unit gradient was 3.6 percent. The stream habitats were scour pools (44%), riffles (18%), rapids (18%), and cascades (16%). Stream substrate was a combination of gravel (36%), cobble (23%), fine sediments (23%), and boulder (16%). There was 10% active bank erosion and 5% stream bank undercut for the reach length. Large wood debris volume was 39.5m 3 /100m of stream reach length. The trees found most frequently in the riparian zones were hardwoods and conifers 3-30cm dbh (based on eight riparian transects). Reach 2: (T31S-R09W-S15SE) Length 1164 meters. Reach 2 began at a major unnamed tributary junction that contributed greater than 50% flow to mainstem Panther Creek. The channel was hillslope constrained in a moderate V-shaped narrow valley floor. The average valley width index was 1.8 (range: 1.0-3.0). Land use was large trees. The average unit gradient was 3.7 percent. The predominant stream habitats were riffles (30%), rapids (30%), and scour pools (24%). cobble (20%). There was 9% active bank erosion and 4% stream bank undercut. Large wood debris volume was 40.7m3/100m of the reach length. The trees found most frequently

in the riparian zones were hardwood 3-15cm dbh and conifers 3-30cm dbh (based on two riparian transects).

COMMENTS:

The crew observed coho fry, trout fry, and adult trout up to 20cm in length. A culvert (unit #221, 3193m) with a 2.1 meter drop was indentified as a potential barrier to upstream fish migration; however, the crew noted both fry and adult trout above this unit. Additional wildlife observed included a bull snake, red-skinned newt, and Pacific giant salamander. Numerous wood debris jams were noted throughout the stream survey. An ODFW salmon spawning survey sign was noted at u100 (1555m). The crew made that the topo map and gps coordinates did not align at u277 (4309m).
